Sports Quota Government Jobs
Get a secure government or PSU job through achievements in recognised sports.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Training and competing as part of your regular job
- Team spirit and travel to tournaments
- Job security that many full-time athletes do not have
- Seats are few and sport-specific, and a bad injury or dip in form can end your chances
- Age limits are low and only recent achievements count, so the window is short
- You must keep performing after joining: there is a 5-year commitment and probation, and postings can be far from home
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed subjects. The qualification depends on the post. In 2025-26 Railway notices, Level 2/3 posts ask for Class 12 (or Class 10 plus an Act Apprenticeship course) and Level 4/5 posts ask for a degree in any discipline. Level 1 posts generally ask for Class 10 or ITI (reported). Central forces such as SSB have asked for Class 10 (reported).
- First degree
- No degree is compulsory for the lower posts. A degree in any subject opens the higher Railway levels (Level 4/5). There is no Group A or B direct entry under the central sports quota.
- Entrance exams
- Usually no written exam. You are selected on your recognised sports achievements, a trial or skill test, your education and a medical. In the Central Railway 2026-27 notice, the 100 marks are split 50 for sports achievement, 40 for trials and 10 for education.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
You work in a government department, Railways, a police or paramilitary force, or a PSU, and you also play for its team. You train, compete in tournaments for the department, and do an office or duty job. How the time is split varies by employer.
A day in the work
A typical day starts early with training on the ground, track or court, often at the department's sports facility. After that you may report for office or duty work. Whether you do that depends on your employer and the period of the season. Before big tournaments you move to a camp or travel to play for your Railway zone or force. In the off-season you still train, and you are expected to keep performing, because your sport is why you were hired. (This describes the general pattern; it varies between employers.)
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–10Pick one sport and play it seriously. Aim for district, then state, school teams. A place in your state school team at the National School Games counts as a recognised achievement for Group C central jobs. Keep your Class 10 marks safe, because every post needs at least that.
- Step 2 · Class 11–12Finish Class 12 along with your sport. Compete at state and national level, including junior nationals and Khelo India. Collect certificates from the right bodies. The central rules count representing a State or India, junior national medals and Khelo India Youth Games medals as 'meritorious' achievements. Class 12 qualifies you for Railway Level 2/3 posts.
- Step 3 · College years (optional but useful)A degree in any subject makes you eligible for Railway Level 4/5. Play for your university in inter-university events. Notices only count recent achievements, so keep competing. The Western Railway 2025-26 notice counted achievements from 1 April 2023 onwards.
- Step 4 · When notices appearThere is no single exam date. Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) of each zone issue their own yearly 'Sports Quota (Open Advertisement)' notices at different times. Central departments such as the Department of Posts and forces such as SSB issue their own notices. Apply online, with certificates from recognised national federations. Since RBE 118/2025 (24 Nov 2025), Railways accept only certificates from recognised National Sports Federations.
- Step 5 · Sports norms, trials and marksEach notice lists minimum sports norms for each pay level. For Level 4/5 in Railways you must have represented India at the Olympics, or finished in the top three at events such as the World Cup, Asian Games or Commonwealth Games. Level 2/3 and Level 1 norms are lower. You are then called for trials. In Railways you must score at least 70 marks for Level 4/5, 65 for Level 2/3 and 60 for Level 1. If scores tie, the younger candidate gets preference.
- Step 6 · Document check and medicalYour certificates are verified and you must be declared medically fit for the post. Fake or wrong documents can lead to termination at any stage. Some sports have physical needs, for example a minimum height of 6 ft for basketball in one Railway notice.
- Step 7 · Joining, bond and probationIn the Central Railway 2026-27 notice, selected sportspersons sign a 5-year service bond. They must keep playing for at least 5 years. Performance is checked in the first two years (probation), and service can be ended if it falls short.
Ways in
- Railways (zonal RRCs) and Production UnitsThe biggest steady source. Each zone advertises Level 1, Level 2/3 and Level 4/5 sports-quota posts every year, with discipline-wise vacancies. Pay Levels 1 to 5 under the 7th CPC.
- Other central Group C posts and forcesCentral rules let departments fill up to 5% of direct-recruit Group C vacancies with meritorious sportspersons. Examples are the Department of Posts (Postal Assistant, Postman, MTS) and CAPFs such as SSB (Constable GD sports quota, advertised in 2026).
- State governmentsStates make their own rules. For example, Puducherry has a 5% horizontal reservation for sportspersons in Group C posts, open only to residents of the Union Territory. Check your own state's sports department.
- Sports Authority of India (SAI)For Olympians and Paralympians only. SAI recruits them as Assistant Coach, with 5% of entry-level posts reserved for Olympians and 1% for Paralympians.
Your real chances
Seats are few. Central Railway's 2026-27 notice (15 July 2026) offers 21 Group C and 38 Level 1 posts, in total, for every sport and for men and women together. North Central Railway's 2025-26 notice had 46 posts across all sports. We could not find official applicant numbers.

You start on a fixed government pay level that depends on your education and sports norms, and it grows with allowances, promotions and any special increments for medals; take-home also depends on the employer (Railways, a force or a state) and the city of posting.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women have their own posts in many disciplines (for example women's hockey, cricket, weightlifting and athletics in Railway notices), and central forces such as SSB advertise separate seats for women (reported). Para sports in the Paralympic and Para Asian Games are on the central government's list of qualifying sports. Central rules allow age relaxation of up to 5 years (10 years for SC/ST) for Group C sportspersons. Every post still needs medical fitness for that post, and some sports have physical conditions such as minimum height.

Good to know
- Under central rules, sports-quota appointments are made only to Group C and erstwhile Group D posts by direct recruitment, not to Group A or B. Some states have different rules.
- The norms, vacancies and age limits change every year and differ from zone to zone. Always read the latest notice for your sport and your level.
- A medal does not skip the paperwork. You still need the right education for the post, the right certificate from the right federation, and a pass in the trials and medical.
- Sports quota is a way in for people who are already good at a sport. If you only like the idea of a government job, SSC and RRB exams are a different road.
