Sports Scientist
Use data on fitness, movement and recovery to improve athlete performance and prevent injury.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- You like sport and want to know why bodies perform the way they do.
- You enjoy numbers, charts and simple experiments with real people.
- You like working as part of a team with coaches, doctors and athletes.
- Training and match schedules can mean early starts, weekends and travel.
- Many good jobs need a master's degree, so the study takes several years.
- Pay and job openings can be uneven, and you may need to build a reputation over time.
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in Science is the usual route, either PCB or PCM. Most colleges want about 50 to 55 per cent overall, with a small relaxation for SC, ST and OBC students. Some private colleges accept Arts or Commerce students if they take a bridge course in biology or anatomy. Check each college's rules.
- First degree
- B.Sc (Hons) in Sports Science, usually 3 years, though some colleges run 4-year versions. Another route is B.P.Ed, followed by an M.Sc in Exercise Physiology or Sports Biomechanics.
- Entrance exams
- This depends on the college. Some use their own test, some use CUET-UG from NTA, and many add a physical fitness or sports skill test. For M.Sc at LNIPE Gwalior, the 2025-26 prospectus lists a written test through CUET plus a fitness and skill test.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Testing athletes for strength, stamina and speed; measuring heart rate, oxygen use and body composition; studying how an athlete moves and where injuries start; planning training loads and recovery; and sharing findings with coaches and physios. Work is found in national sports bodies, academies, teams, fitness labs, and some schools and colleges.
A day in the work
A typical day starts early with a warm-up session for a squad, then fitness tests such as sprints, jump tests or a heart-rate check. In the afternoon you may review data on a laptop, check how an athlete's recovery is going, and talk to the coach about changes to the training plan. Some days end with a report or a short talk for players, and you may make notes on how well a diet or sleep plan is working.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose Science with Biology or Maths in Class 11. Keep a regular sport or fitness habit and note your own times, distances and heart rate. Physical Education as a subject helps if your school offers it.
- Step 2 · Class 12Finish Class 12 with the marks most colleges ask for, around 50 to 55 per cent. Check each college's list of entrance tests, fitness tests and sports-quota rules early, because they differ.
- Step 3 · Entrance and selectionSome colleges admit on Class 12 marks, some use CUET-UG, and some hold a fitness or sports skill test. Read the official notice for your college in the year you apply, because dates and tests change each year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 3 or 4 yearsComplete a B.Sc (Hons) in Sports Science, or a B.P.Ed. Learn exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition and sports psychology. Use the lab work and internships offered in the course.
- Step 5 · 2 years (optional but common)Take an M.Sc in Exercise Physiology, Sports Biomechanics or Sports Science. At LNIPE, the 2025-26 prospectus lists a graduate-level entry with a CUET-PG test. Confirm the current year's rules on the official site. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · After studyBuild practical experience with teams, academies or sports labs. Short specialist diplomas, such as the ones NSNIS Patiala lists in sports performance analysis or strength and conditioning, can add skills. Check each course's eligibility first.
Ways in
- B.Sc (Hons) Sports ScienceA 3 or 4 year degree straight after Class 12. Offered by several colleges, including some in Delhi and Bengaluru.
- B.P.Ed, then M.ScA physical education degree first, then a 2-year M.Sc in Exercise Physiology or Sports Biomechanics. Many sports scientists take this route.
- Postgraduate diploma after a degreeA graduate in a related field can take a 1-year PG diploma at NSNIS Patiala, such as in exercise physiology. Check the eligibility for the year you apply.

What people earn
Pay varies a lot. Entry-level jobs in schools, gyms and small academies are modest, while people with experience and a master's degree who work with national teams, big clubs or elite academies can earn much more. City, employer and certificates all make a difference.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
ASSRM Delhi's official eligibility page says SC, ST and OBC students get a 5 per cent relaxation on the minimum marks for its B.Sc Sports Science course. Some colleges also reserve sports-quota seats for players at national or state level. I did not find rules specific to girls or to students with disabilities for this career.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Do a simple fitness log for a month: pulse after a 5-minute walk, number of skips in one minute, and how you feel. Share the results with your PE teacher.
- Class 10–12Ask your school's sports teacher if you can help as a timer or scorer at a school or district event. Watch how the team measures and reviews performance.
- College or afterTake a free NPTEL course on human physiology or biology to see how the body uses energy and recovers from exercise.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Sports science is a field, not a title with a legal licence in India. I did not find a council that registers sports scientists, so employers judge you by your degree, certificates and experience.
- Many degrees are about the science of the body, not about being a top athlete. You do not need to have played at national level to study it, though some colleges give sports-quota seats.
- A B.P.Ed trains you more for teaching and coaching. A B.Sc in Sports Science focuses more on research and testing. Both can lead to work with athletes.
- Physiotherapy is a separate, regulated course with its own entry rules. If you are drawn to injury care, look at that path too.
