What the work is like

Guarding the Indo-Myanmar border, helping the police keep peace in the Northeast and giving relief in floods and landslides. Tradesmen keep the force running as cooks, electricians, vehicle mechanics, radio and line staff, clerks, medical assistants, barbers and more.

A day in the work
The day starts early with PT and parade. A mechanic or electrician then reports to the workshop to repair vehicles, radios or power lines for the battalion. A cook plans and prepares meals for the whole unit. Riflemen on duty may patrol a border stretch or man a post. Evenings are for weapon and kit checks, and calls home if the network allows.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 8–10Pass Class 10 and start a daily fitness habit: running, push-ups, stretching. Keep your school certificates and birth certificate ready, because the age limit is checked on the Class 10 certificate.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 10Pick a trade that matches your skills. Cook, barber, washerman and safaiwala posts mostly need Class 10 (reported). Electrician, mechanic, draughtsman and medical posts may need an ITI, diploma or Class 12, so check each notice. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · When the notice comes outApply online on the official Assam Rifles recruitment page. Notices come out on no fixed schedule, so check the site yourself. The usual age limit is about 18–23 years for Rifleman posts, with relaxations for SC/ST, OBC and ex-servicemen (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Physical testThe physical standards test checks height, chest and weight. The efficiency test is a timed run plus jumps. Standards differ for men and women and for candidates from some hill and tribal regions. The notice gives the exact numbers. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Trade test and written testA trade or skill test checks that you can really do the job. A written test with objective questions on general knowledge, maths and language usually follows (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Documents and medicalOriginal certificates are checked. A medical exam follows. Candidates who fail it can usually ask for a review, but the rules are strict, so confirm in the notice. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Training and probationSelected candidates go for basic military and trade training, then are posted to a battalion, often in the Northeast. A probation period applies, so your work and conduct are watched (reported). (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn

Official pay

Group C Rifleman tradesman posts are generally in Pay Level 3 (₹21,700–69,100) of the 7th CPC, plus allowances. Some technical or clerical posts such as Havildar (Clerk) or Nursing Assistant sit at higher levels. This is from memory and not confirmed from the latest notice (reported).

Pay starts modestly at entry level and rises with promotions, years of service and postings in field or hardship areas, which carry extra allowances. Free ration, accommodation and medical care add to the real value.

Myth and fact

Myth: Only people from the Northeast can join Assam Rifles.
Fact: Indian citizens from any state can apply, if they meet the age, education and physical rules. Some relaxations in physical standards apply to candidates from particular tribal or hill areas. You may be posted in the Northeast, but you can be sent elsewhere too.

For girls and students with disabilities

Recent notices have kept some posts for women, and the physical standards for women are lower than for men (reported). Posts needing heavy physical fitness are generally not open to candidates with major disabilities. Check the notice for each post.
