Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing your own app on a real phone and watching people use it
  • Solving small logic puzzles and fixing bugs step by step
  • Learning new tools, since phone systems and app rules change often
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Deadlines and release days can be stressful, and some work runs late
  • Phone systems change every year, so you must keep learning all your working life
  • Many junior roles start with a lot of testing and small fixes before big features
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream can lead to BCA at many colleges, but many colleges ask for Maths at Class 12. B.Tech in Computer Science needs Physics and Maths. Most colleges do not test coding in school, so practice on your own counts for a lot.
First degree
BCA (3 years) or B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science (4 years). Many people also join from a diploma or a short course, then build a portfolio.
Entrance exams
BCA entry depends on the college, often its own test or merit list. B.Tech CS usually needs a national or state engineering entrance exam. Check each college's official eligibility page for the year you apply.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Planning app screens, writing code in Kotlin or Java for Android and Swift for iPhone, connecting apps to servers and payment systems, testing on real phones, and publishing updates on the app stores. You work with designers, backend developers and testers.

A day in the work
Most days start with a team stand-up, where you say what you did and what you will do next. You then write code for a new screen or fix a bug that testers found on a phone. In the afternoon, you test the app on Android and iPhone devices and check how it behaves on slow networks. You end by reviewing a colleague's code and noting any problems for the next release.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–10Learn the basics of programming in one language, such as Python. Make small programs, a quiz or a simple game, and keep them in a folder you can show later.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Take Maths, and Computer Science if your school offers it. Learn how a simple app works: screens, buttons, data saved on the phone. Build one small app and test it on your own phone.
  3. Step 3 · Class 12Apply to BCA or B.Tech CS. Check each college's own eligibility and entrance rules, because they differ by state and by college. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · 3–4 years of collegePick Android (Kotlin, Android Studio) or iOS (Swift, Xcode). Build three to five real apps, put them on GitHub or a portfolio page, and learn basic databases and how apps talk to servers. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Final yearDo an internship or a project with a small firm or startup. Publish at least one app on the Play Store or App Store, so an employer can see your work.
  6. Step 6 · First job onwardsStart as a junior developer. Over time, you may lead a team, move into a product role, or do an MCA or a specialist course if you want a master's degree.

Ways in

  • RouteBCA, then a job as an app developer or an MCA for later roles.
  • RouteB.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science, then a job at a product company or an app firm.
  • RouteDiploma or self-study plus a strong portfolio, then a job at a small firm. This path is harder to get started on, and many firms still ask for a degree.

What people earn

Pay varies a lot by company, city and skill. Freshers at small firms earn much less than experienced developers at large product companies or in big cities.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need a top engineering college or a computer degree to build apps for a living.
Fact: A degree helps you get the first job at many firms, but a working portfolio of real apps carries a lot of weight. Some developers learn through courses and projects, though that path takes more effort to get started.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make a simple quiz or a small game in Scratch or Python this month, and show it to a friend or a teacher.
  • Class 10–12Browse the free NPTEL course list and join one course on how apps and web services work. Joining is free; a certificate exam costs extra, so you can skip it.Open link ↗
  • College or afterBuild one small Android or iOS app with a clear purpose, such as a daily expense tracker. Test it on a real phone and put the code on GitHub.

Good to know

  • I could not open official BCA or B.Tech eligibility and fee pages for this profile. Check the college's own website before you apply.
  • Some firms hire freshers from any degree if the portfolio is strong. Others screen strictly on degree and marks.
  • Free NPTEL courses cover app development basics. Use them to learn, but they do not replace a degree or a portfolio.
