Class 11–12 subjects: Any Class 12 stream works for the main design entrance exams. You do not need Maths or Science. Drawing, visual sense and clear ideas count more. Start building these in Class 9 to 12.
First degree: B.Des in Communication Design (about 4 years) or BFA Applied Art, then agency work to build a portfolio and experience.
Entrance exams: UCEED (IIT Bombay) for B.Des at IITs, or NID DAT for B.Des at NID campuses.

What the work is like

Setting the visual style of ad campaigns across print, digital, outdoor and TV. Working with copywriters on ideas, guiding designers and photographers, presenting concepts to clients, and supervising shoots.

A day in the work
The day often starts with a brief from a copywriter or strategy team about a client's product. You sketch rough ideas or mood boards, then review them with designers and suggest changes. Afternoons may bring a client presentation or a photo or video shoot to check that the visuals match the concept. The day ends with feedback notes and a plan for the next round.

The path, step by step

Step 1 · Class 7–12Build a drawing and visual habit. Keep a sketchbook, study ads and posters, and learn basic design software. Any stream is fine for the entrance tests.
Step 2 · Class 12 (passed or appearing)Apply for a design entrance. For NID, the 2027 DAT form closes on 30 November 2026 and Prelims are on 20 December 2026. UCEED for IIT B.Des is also open to any stream. (reported — check with the official body)
Step 3 · About 4 yearsStudy B.Des Communication Design, or BFA Applied Art at a fine arts college. Use the course years to make real work for briefs, college fests and small clients.
Step 4 · Final years of collegeBuild an agency-ready portfolio with campaigns, not single posters. Show the brief, your idea and the result. Do internships in agencies or design studios.

Ways in

B.Des Communication DesignEntry through UCEED (IIT campuses) or NID DAT (NID campuses). You need to pass Class 12 in any stream. A rank does not guarantee a seat; counselling decides.
BFA Applied ArtA fine arts college route. Entry rules depend on each college, so check its notice. Many graduates then build an agency portfolio the same way as B.Des students.

What people earn

Pay grows a lot with years of experience and leadership. Big metro agencies and large brands usually pay more than small studios, and freelance income can swing from project to project.

Myth and fact

Myth: ~~You must be a great painter to become an art director.~~

Fact: Entrance tests and agency work test visual thinking, ideas and communication. Fine drawing helps, but the ability to think of an idea and explain it matters just as much.

For girls and students with disabilities

Reserved-category candidates get age relaxation and seat reservation under the NID rules, and women applicants pay a lower NID DAT application fee in the general category (reported in news). Check the official reservation section of the handbook.

Good to know

Agencies usually hire on the strength of your portfolio. A degree gets you in the door, but the work you show decides the job.
Passing a design entrance does not guarantee admission. NID says a merit rank does not guarantee a seat.
Most people do not become art directors straight after college. Expect several years as a designer before the title.
Freelance work is possible, but projects come and go, so income can be uneven.
