Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving hard problems in physics, materials, chemistry or engineering, and working on large national projects
  • Careful, methodical work where safety and accuracy matter
  • A stable government career with research freedom and a chance to grow into senior scientific grades
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long study with high marks (60% minimum) and a tough interview, with no fixed vacancy list published in the brochure
  • Training is residential (hostel is mandatory), and you may be posted far from home. DAE units are in places like Mumbai, Kalpakkam, Indore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Jaduguda
  • A three-year service bond after training, and strict security and safety rules that limit what you can share about your work
Class 11–12 subjects
BARC's 2026 brochure sets no special Class 12 rule. Your degree decides your stream. For the engineering route, take PCM in Class 11–12 so you can get into a B.E./B.Tech. For the M.Sc. route, you need Physics, Chemistry or Maths, depending on the subject. Biology is needed only for the Biosciences M.Sc.
First degree
B.E./B.Tech. (4 years) in Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Instrumentation or Civil Engineering. Or an M.Sc. (after B.Sc.) in Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology or Geophysics. You need at least 60% aggregate, or 6.0 CGPA. The degree must be full-time and on-campus.
Entrance exams
BARC's own online screening test (computer-based) or a valid GATE score, followed by a BARC interview. There is no UPSC or SSC exam for this post.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Research and engineering work on nuclear power plants, research reactors, accelerators, fuel and materials, radiation safety, isotopes, and also computing, instruments and geology. Work includes experiments, design and simulation, safety checks, and writing reports.

A day in the work
You reach your lab or plant section in the morning and check the previous day's results, such as readings from an experiment, a simulation run or a test loop. Then you may work on a design problem, calibrate an instrument, or review a safety report with your group. After lunch there are often team meetings, discussions with engineers from other units, or writing and checking technical notes. Safety rules are strict, and some areas need special clearance and monitoring badges. The work depends heavily on your discipline.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12There is no 'nuclear' stream at school. Take PCM if you want engineering or a Physics, Chemistry or Maths M.Sc. Take Biology if the Biosciences M.Sc. interests you. Build strong basics in Physics and Maths, because BARC's test checks subject knowledge and problem-solving.
  2. Step 2 · 4–5 yearsComplete an eligible degree. This is a B.E./B.Tech. in one of 8 engineering branches, or an M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology or Geophysics. You need at least 60% aggregate or 6.0 CGPA, and only full-time on-campus degrees count. Final-year students can apply if all degree requirements are done before 31 July of that year. Some look-alike degrees, such as biotechnology or biomedical B.Tech for Biosciences, are not eligible. Check the table in the brochure.
  3. Step 3 · Dec–Jan each yearApply online on barcocesexam.in. For the 2026 batch, applications ran from 22 December 2025 to 21 January 2026. Choose one screening route: BARC's online test or your GATE score. Keep an active email ID and mobile number, because interview calls come that way. I could not confirm an official notice for the 2027 batch yet, so watch the portal.
  4. Step 4 · March–AprilScreening. For the 2026 batch the online test was held on 14–15 March 2026 in more than fifty cities. The questions are in English, test subject knowledge and problem-solving, and do not cover general knowledge or aptitude. Only shortlisted candidates are called to the interview.
  5. Step 5 · May–JuneInterview in Mumbai. Geology and Geophysics interviews are in Hyderabad. In 2026, final selection depended only on the interview, subject to medical fitness. Outstation candidates get a two-way train fare.
  6. Step 6 · July onwardsMedical test at a DAE hospital, then training. OCES is a one-year orientation course at a BARC Training School (Mumbai or Hyderabad in 2026), with a stipend. Engineering graduates who do very well can take DGFS instead: a 2-year M.Tech at a listed institute, then a 4-month BARC course. OCES-2026 began on 31 July 2026.
  7. Step 7 · After trainingYou are appointed Scientific Officer 'C', a Group-A gazetted post, in a DAE unit or the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. You must sign an agreement and bond to serve DAE for at least three years after training.

Ways in

  • Engineering graduate → OCES or DGFSWho: B.E./B.Tech. in ME, CH, MT, EE, EC, CS, IN or CE Clear the BARC online test or GATE, then the interview. Do the one-year OCES. The best-performing graduates who also get into a listed M.Tech can be given DGFS: a 2-year fellowship with M.Tech, then a 4-month BARC course.
  • Science postgraduate → OCESWho: M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology or Geophysics (60% in B.Sc. and in M.Sc.) Same screening and interview, then the one-year OCES. Physics and Chemistry candidates can be trained in Radiological Safety and Environmental Science (RSES). Geology and Geophysics are handled in Hyderabad.

What people earn

Official pay

Scientific Officer 'C', Pay Level 10, ₹56,100 basic (7th CPC Pay Matrix), a Group-A post, plus allowances. You start with two or three increments after OCES, or three or four after DGFS, depending on your training performance. BARC says total monthly pay with three increments is about ₹1,34,000 at Mumbai rates (2026 brochure).

Pay follows government scales, so it is steady and rises with promotions through the scientific grades. The city of posting affects allowances, and degree and employer don't change the starting scale.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must study 'nuclear engineering' to become a BARC scientist.
Fact: For the 2026 batch, BARC took mainly mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, electrical, electronics, computer, instrumentation and civil engineers, plus M.Sc. graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology and Geophysics. BARC itself trains you in nuclear topics during the OCES year.

For girls and students with disabilities

The brochure says women candidates are encouraged to apply. Persons with 40% or more disability get a 10-year age relaxation and may be allowed a scribe (2026 brochure). Fee exemption for women, SC/ST and PwBD, and higher age limits for OBC (29) and SC/ST (31) against 26 for General, are reported and should be checked in the current notice.

Good to know

  • BARC says OCES/DGFS-2026 tentatively ran as below. Check the official portal (barcocesexam.in) every year, because dates and eligible degrees can change.
  • Many students think only a 'nuclear engineering' degree works. The 2026 brochure lists common branches such as mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering, plus science M.Sc. degrees.
  • BARC also runs a separate PhD fellowship scheme (DDFS) with its own brochure. It is not part of OCES/DGFS.
  • BARC also hires scientific assistants and technicians through separate notices. Those are different jobs with different qualifications.
