Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Understanding how huge machines and control systems actually work
  • Teamwork in a control room or on the plant floor
  • Knowing your work keeps homes, hospitals and factories running
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Shift work, including night shifts, is part of plant operations (reported)
  • You can be posted anywhere in India, often at plants far from big cities, and a 3-year bond applies after training (reported)
  • Competition is high, and the route needs good B.Tech marks and a strong GATE score
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, so you can enter a B.Tech/BE. Most engineering colleges ask for this. Check each college's own rules.
First degree
B.Tech/BE, 4 years, in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics/Instrumentation (control and instrumentation). It must be from a recognised college. NTPC's last full round asked for at least 65% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwBD) (reported).
Entrance exams
JEE Main or a state entrance test to get into B.Tech. Then GATE, the national engineering test run by the IITs and IISc each February. NTPC shortlists on GATE score, and only that year's score counts for that batch (reported). NTPC's last full round did not use a separate NTPC written test (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.
Subjects that keep this door openClass 11–12: Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics.Physics, Chemistry and Maths.Way back: You can add the missing subject later as an extra subject (for example through NIOS) and still apply, but check the exam's and college's rules. What the work is like

Running and maintaining boilers, turbines, generators, control systems and electrical equipment. Keeping units running safely and efficiently, fixing faults, planning shutdowns for repair, and increasingly working on solar, wind and storage projects.

A day in the work
Your shift starts with a handover from the engineer who worked before you. You check the unit's readings, alarms and any equipment that was acting up. During the day you might sit in the control room watching boiler and turbine data, or walk the plant floor with your team to find the cause of a vibration or a leak. Safety rules come first, and every job needs a permit. Now and then you stay on late during a breakdown or a planned shutdown, and some weeks you work nights.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Aim for steady marks, because engineering degrees and later NTPC rules both ask for a minimum percentage.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Get into a B.Tech/BE in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics/Instrumentation through JEE Main or a state entrance test. Choose a recognised college. Keep your marks at 65% or above (55% for SC/ST/PwBD) (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · B.Tech, 3rd–4th yearAppear for GATE in your own branch's paper. It is held every February, and you can take it from the 3rd year of B.Tech. NTPC accepts only the score of the GATE year named in its advertisement. For EET-2027 that is GATE-2027 only, and older scores are not accepted (reported).
  4. Step 4 · After GATEApply online when NTPC publishes its detailed advertisement. NTPC has put out an advance notice for Engineering Executive Trainees-2027 (Advt. 11/26) on its jobs page. Applications for the 2025 batch opened in Feb 2026, about a year after that GATE exam (reported). Age limit was 27 years, with relaxations (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Shortlisting, documents, medicalNTPC shortlists by GATE score. Then it checks documents and marks, and you go through a medical exam. Some years have also included an interview, so read the advertisement for your year (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 1 year of trainingTrainees are placed in the E1 grade and are paid during training. After training you can be posted to any NTPC plant, project or subsidiary in India. A 3-year service bond applies after training: ₹5 lakh for General/EWS/OBC, ₹2.5 lakh for SC/ST/PwBD (reported). (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Main route: B.Tech + GATEB.Tech/BE in a listed branch, then GATE, then NTPC's Engineering Executive Trainee selection. This is the route described above (reported).Reported — confirm on the official site.
  • Other ways into the power sectorNTPC has also advertised Diploma Trainee and experienced-hire posts in 2026. These have their own rules and are not the same as the engineer post (reported). Check the jobs page at ntpc.co.in. State power companies and other PSUs such as POWERGRID also hire engineers, with their own exams.Reported — confirm on the official site.

What people earn

Official pay

E1 grade, industrial-DA scale of ₹40,000–1,40,000, with ₹40,000 basic at joining, plus allowances and benefits as per NTPC rules (reported for the 2025 batch; the 2027 advertisement is not yet out).

Pay starts at a fixed entry grade, then rises with promotions and years of service, and allowances and housing depend on where you are posted.

Myth and fact

Myth: Power plant jobs are only about coal, and coal is on its way out.
Fact: Coal still provides most of NTPC's capacity, and thermal plants are still needed to keep the grid steady. But NTPC's under-construction renewable capacity (16.4 GW) passed its coal capacity under construction (15.7 GW) in June 2026, so the work is widening to solar, wind, hydro and storage.

For girls and students with disabilities

NTPC's earlier advertisement lists reservations for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD and ex-servicemen, a lower minimum-marks rule of 55% for SC/ST/PwBD, age relaxations, and no application fee for women, SC/ST/PwBD (reported). Medical standards still apply, and the job includes plant and shift work, so read the medical rules in the advertisement for your year.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Look at your home electricity bill and find which power station group supplies your state. Then browse NTPC's list of power stations by type (coal, gas, hydro, solar) and find the one nearest you.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Build one small working project this month, such as a simple solar-powered charger or a basic motor and switch circuit, with your science teacher's help. Write down in 5 lines how energy changes form in it.
  • College or afterPick one core subject from your branch, such as thermodynamics, electrical machines or control systems. Watch the first week of a free NPTEL course on it and solve the practice questions.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • NTPC's jobs page lists an advance notice (Advt. 11/26) for Engineering Executive Trainees-2027 through GATE-2027. The detailed advertisement with vacancies and dates comes later. GATE-2027 registration has already closed, so the next chance for students now in school is a later GATE cycle.
  • Vacancies and branches change every year. In the 2025 batch, about 515 posts were advertised across Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics/Instrumentation and CS/IT, and Civil and Mining were advertised separately (reported).
  • Many people think this job is only about coal. NTPC says it targets 60 GW of renewable energy by 2032, so renewable and storage skills will count too.
  • GATE needs steady study of your B.Tech subjects (thermodynamics, machines, power systems, control). It is a good habit to build from the 1st year of college, not the last.
