ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

DRDO Scientist

Researches and develops weapons, radars and defence technology for the armed forces.

PCM in Class 12, then a first-class B.E./B.Tech After Class 12 Government job

Facts checked 29/10/2026

Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving hard technical problems that go into real equipment used by the armed forces
  • Working in a team of engineers and scientists, with long projects that you see through
  • Government job security and a clear career ladder from Scientist 'B' upwards
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Entry depends on a good GATE rank and an interview. GATE is a tough exam, and DRDO advertises only when it has vacancies
  • You may be posted in any DRDO lab or establishment across India, which can mean moving cities and being far from family
  • Projects can take many years, and much of the work is confidential, so you may not be able to talk about it
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is the usual way into engineering. DRDO itself asks for a degree, not a Class 12 subject. The latest notice (Advt. 156, 2025) needed at least a First Class B.E./B.Tech in the advertised branch. For a few posts it needed a First Class M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry or Maths.
First degree
B.E./B.Tech, 4 years, in a branch DRDO advertises. The 2025 notice listed Electronics & Communication, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical, Metallurgy/Materials, Chemical, Aeronautical/Aerospace, Civil and Biomedical. A few science posts took an M.Sc.
Entrance exams
A valid GATE score in your own branch's paper, followed by a personal interview conducted by DRDO's Recruitment & Assessment Centre (RAC). A separate DRDO "SET" exam does not appear in the recent RAC notices I could check. RAC's public notice says it may use GATE and/or a written test and interview.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing, building and testing defence technology such as radars, missiles, aircraft systems, sensors, materials and software. You work in teams in a DRDO lab, run trials and write technical reports. Some work is at test ranges and field sites.

A day in the work
You reach the lab in the morning and check the overnight results of a test or simulation. Then you meet your team to plan the week's work on a radar part, a software module or a material sample. Much of the day goes in design work, lab trials and writing reports. Some days you are at a test range or a user trial with the armed forces. Work on defence projects can be confidential, so you do not talk about much of it outside.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) and build a strong base. Then get into a B.E./B.Tech course through JEE Main, a state entrance exam or the college's own route. Choose a branch that DRDO hires for, such as Electronics & Communication, Mechanical, Computer Science, Aerospace, Electrical, Metallurgy or Chemical.
  2. Step 2 · 4 yearsComplete your B.E./B.Tech with First Class marks. The 2025 notice also let final-semester students apply if they expected First Class, so long as they submitted their degree by the date given in the notice.
  3. Step 3 · Final year or afterSit GATE in the paper that matches your branch (for example EC, ME, CS, EE or AE). RAC says you need a valid GATE score on the crucial date of eligibility. A GATE score is valid for 3 years. A September 2026 notice reportedly asks candidates to appear in GATE 2027, which is due in February 2027. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · When RAC advertisesApply online on rac.gov.in when a Scientist 'B' advertisement comes out. RAC advertises only when it has vacancies, so there is no fixed yearly date. In Advt. 156 (2025), candidates were shortlisted by GATE score, discipline-wise and category-wise, in the ratio of 1:10.
  5. Step 5 · InterviewShortlisted candidates appear for a personal interview, in Delhi or another place decided by RAC/DRDO. Final merit in 2025 was 80% GATE score and 20% interview. You had to score at least 70% in the interview if unreserved, or 60% if EWS/OBC/SC/ST/Divyangjan, to enter the final merit list.
  6. Step 6 · JoiningSelected candidates join as Scientist 'B' in a DRDO lab. RAC has put out a notice about post-induction training for selected candidates. A new government officer normally serves a probation period, but I could not confirm DRDO's exact length from an official page. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. OptionalM.Tech or PhD later. These help you grow into senior research roles. They are not needed for the Scientist 'B' entry in the 2025 notice.

Ways in

  • Engineering graduate (the main route)First Class B.E./B.Tech, then a valid GATE score in your branch, then the RAC interview. This is how most Scientist 'B' posts were filled in the 2025 notice (127 of 152 posts were in DRDO itself).
  • Science postgraduateA First Class M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry or Maths, plus the matching GATE score (PH, CY or MA), was accepted for some posts in 2025. Posts at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) and the Services Selection Boards took life-science, statistics and psychology postgraduates. All of these also needed the matching GATE paper.
  • Experienced professionalsRAC also advertises higher Scientist posts (C, D, E) for people with years of relevant work experience. I could only find this described on non-official sites, so check rac.gov.in before relying on it.Reported — confirm on the official site.

What people earn

Official pay

Level 10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, basic pay ₹56,100. Total emoluments including HRA and other allowances were about ₹1,00,000 a month at metro-city rates at joining (Advt. 156, 2025).

Pay starts at the same government level for everyone, but take-home changes with the city of posting, allowances and your promotions over the years.

Myth and fact

Myth: You can become a DRDO scientist by clearing an exam right after Class 12.
Fact: You first need a full engineering degree (or an M.Sc for some posts) with First Class marks. Then you need a valid GATE score and the RAC interview. It is a 4-year path plus GATE.

For girls and students with disabilities

In Advt. 156 (2025), the upper age limit was relaxed by up to 10 years for Divyangjan candidates, and some posts were reserved for Divyangjan (HH, LD, AAV/Dw) in the listed disciplines. Age limits were higher for OBC (non-creamy layer) and SC/ST candidates, and posts were reserved by category. The notice does not mention any special seats for women; the fee waiver for women is reported on non-official sites (reported).

  • Class 7–9Make a small working model this month, such as a paper glider or a simple circuit, and test what changes how far it flies. If your school allows, enter the science exhibition or the INSPIRE Awards (DST).Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Start a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in basic electronics, programming or mechanics, and finish one unit with notes. This builds the base that every DRDO branch needs.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A valid GATE score is a must for Scientist 'B' direct recruitment. RAC's 2025 advertisement warns that a false GATE score can lead to legal action against the candidate.
  • Posts shown as ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency) in the notice are Scientist/Engineer 'B' posts but are not part of DRDO. "Encadred" posts, for example at CME Pune, are paid by the armed services and cannot be moved to DRDO labs.
  • RAC says it notifies vacancies depending on requirement. In 2025, Advt. 156 first closed on 4 July and was extended to 8 August, with age counted as on 4 July 2025. Always check rac.gov.in for the current notice.
  • Not sure about GATE or a 4-year degree? DRDO also hires technical assistants and technicians through separate notices on drdo.gov.in. These need a diploma, B.Sc or ITI, not a B.Tech.
