Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Listening closely to people and asking detailed questions
- Building long relationships with patients and families
- Working independently, often running your own clinic
- Needs PCB, NEET and 5.5 years of study before you earn properly
- Income can be uncertain at the start, especially in private practice
- Some people, including doctors in other systems, doubt the science behind homeopathy, and you will need to handle that with patience
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (and English). Colleges usually ask for at least 50% in PCB, with lower cut-offs for SC/ST/OBC and students with disabilities (reported). You must be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the year you join (reported).
- First degree
- BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery): 4.5 years of study plus a 1-year compulsory internship, so 5.5 years in all (reported).
- Entrance exams
- NEET UG (conducted by NTA). Seats are then filled through counselling: AACCC for the all-India seats and central or deemed universities, and each state's own counselling for state and private seats.
- Licence or registration
- You need to be enrolled in a State Register or the National Register of Homoeopathy under the National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020 before you practise. The Act also provides for a National Exit Test as the licensing exam once it starts.
What the work is like
Taking a patient's full history, deciding on a medicine and dose, and following up over weeks or months. You may work in your own clinic, in a government dispensary or hospital, in an AYUSH centre, or in teaching or research.
A day in the work
You start the morning seeing patients, many of them with long-standing problems like skin trouble, allergies or recurring colds. You spend 20–40 minutes on each new case, asking about symptoms, sleep, food, stress and family history. Then you choose a medicine, explain how to take it and note when to come back. In the afternoon you review follow-up patients and update records. If you work in a government dispensary, you also deal with registers, medicine stock and health camps.
The full route: exams, training, registration
- Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB). Biology is compulsory. Students with only PCM cannot apply unless they add Biology.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 with PCB and English. Colleges usually ask for about 50% in PCB; the limit is lower for SC/ST/OBC and for students with disabilities. Check the exact figure in the counselling brochure each year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Class 12 yearAppear for NEET UG, held once a year by NTA, usually in the summer. There is no separate homeopathy entrance test. You need to reach the qualifying percentile (50th for General, 40th for SC/ST/OBC, 45th for General-PwD). A higher rank gets you a better or government college. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · After the NEET resultJoin AYUSH counselling. AACCC handles the 15% all-India quota in government colleges and all seats in central and deemed universities. Each state runs its own counselling for the rest. In 2026 the rounds ran from about September to November. Many states and colleges have their own domicile and fee rules.
- Step 5 · 5.5 yearsStudy at an NCH-approved college. You learn anatomy, physiology, pathology, materia medica, organon, repertory, and clinical work. The last year is a rotating internship in hospitals and clinics, which you must complete before registration. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · After internshipEnrol in your State Register or the National Register of Homoeopathy under the NCH Act, 2020. Only then can you practise legally.
- OptionalMD (Homoeopathy) in a subject like Materia Medica, Repertory or Paediatrics, entered through the AIAPGET exam (reported). An MD is needed for teaching posts and for research posts such as CCRH Research Officer, which is a Level 10 post in the 2025–26 advertisement.
- The NCH Act, 2020 came into force on 5 July 2021. It replaced the old Central Council of Homoeopathy.
- The Act provides for a National Exit Test (NExT) as the licensing exam, and NCH has notified regulations for it. Check nch.org.in for whether it applies to your batch.
- The National Register of practitioners is kept by the Board of Ethics and Registration for Homoeopathy and is open to the public.

What people earn
Earnings vary a lot: a new graduate in a clinic or as a salaried medical officer usually earns modestly, while a doctor who builds a trusted private practice in a city can earn much more over the years, and a small-town or rural practice may take time to grow.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Students with disabilities need a lower NEET qualifying percentile (45th for General-PwD, 40th for reserved categories) and a lower Class 12 mark limit (reported). Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS applies in government counselling. No separate rule for girls was found.

Good to know
- There is no direct entry without NEET. Any BHMS seat, government or private, is given only to students who have qualified NEET UG.
- Fees and seat rules differ by state. Always check the state's official counselling brochure, not only a college's own website.
- Homeopathy is a legally recognised and regulated system in India. Many modern-medicine doctors and scientists, however, question whether homeopathic medicines work beyond a placebo effect. Read about both sides before you decide.
- What medicines a BHMS doctor may prescribe, apart from homeopathic ones, differs by state law and has been argued in courts. Check your own state's rules before planning your practice.
