What the work is like

Studying a client's problem with data and interviews, building a clear analysis, and recommending a plan. Work includes slide decks, meetings with client teams, and travel to client sites. Teams often run in short projects of a few months.

A day in the work
A typical day starts with a call or meeting with the client team, where you explain findings or check the next step. Much of the rest goes to analysis: cleaning data in Excel, building models and drafting slides. Late evenings are common near deadlines, and some weeks include travel to the client's office. You end the day by sharing your work with your manager and planning tomorrow's tasks.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Pick the stream you can do well in. Build comfort with maths, clear English writing and reading the business pages of a newspaper. Consulting rewards clear thinking more than one fixed subject.
  2. Step 2 · Bachelor's degree, 3 yearsStudy any subject. Firms look for strong marks, problem-solving and communication. Keep your percentage at or above the CAT minimum: 50% for General, EWS and NC-OBC, and 45% for SC, ST and PwD. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Final year of degreeAppear for CAT, a computer-based test. CAT 2026 is reported to be on 29 November 2026. Final-year students can apply provisionally. Check the official CAT site for the next cycle's dates. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · MBA or PGP, 2 yearsShortlisting at IIMs and other top B-schools uses the CAT score, graduation marks, a written ability test and a personal interview. Admission is not automatic even with a good CAT score. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Second year of MBADo a summer internship after the first year. Campus placement follows in the second year. Consulting firms run their own hiring rounds, often with case interviews where you solve a business problem out loud. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · First 2–3 years at workStart as an analyst or associate on client teams. Promotion to consultant and then manager depends on your work and on how the firm grows. Many people move to industry roles after a few years. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • RouteCampus hiring straight after a 2-year MBA from an IIM or top B-school.
  • RouteLateral hiring after 3–5 years in industry, banking or analytics, where firms look for specialist experience.
  • RouteStarting from a professional degree such as CA, engineering or economics, and then taking a business or analytics role before consulting.

Your real chances

For CAT 2025, about 2.95 lakh candidates registered, a drop of roughly 10% from the year before (reported from IIM Kozhikode's admit card notice). Only a part of them sit the test, and an even smaller group gets calls from the top IIMs.

What people earn

Pay varies a lot. Freshers from top MBA programmes start higher than most other graduates, while experienced consultants earn more, and pay also depends on the firm, the city and your performance.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must go to an IIM to become a management consultant.
Fact: IIMs are the best-known route, but many other business schools and experienced professionals from engineering, finance and analytics also enter consulting. Your work and your results matter as much as your college.

For girls and students with disabilities

CAT eligibility uses a lower marks cut-off of 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. IIMs and other schools also apply their own reservation policies for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates. Check each institute's reservation rules before applying.

  • Class 10–12Join your school's debate, quiz or model-UN club. Practise explaining one business problem, such as why a canteen loses money, in three clear points.

Good to know

  • Most firms hire MBA graduates from top colleges in large numbers, so the MBA route is the most common one. Other routes exist but are less common for freshers.
  • IIM fees are high. Check the fee pages and each college's financial aid rules before deciding.
  • The CAT eligibility rules are only the first gate. Each institute sets its own shortlisting process, so read each college's notice carefully.
