People in this work enjoy
  • Checking details and finding the one entry that does not match
  • Steady, respected work with job security and clear rules
  • Learning how government money actually moves, from a ministry to a village scheme
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Lakhs compete for few vacancies, so you may need more than one attempt
  • Transfers and postings can be far from home, and audit visits mean travel
  • Much of the work is careful, repetitive paperwork with strict rules, and you must pass departmental or SAS exams after joining
Class 11–12 subjects
No fixed subjects in Class 12. Any stream can reach this job. Maths, accountancy and economics make the exam and the work easier. For the state-cadre Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer posts you also need proof of the state's official language at Class 10 level (SSC CGL 2026 notice).
First degree
Any bachelor's degree from a recognised university (3 years in most colleges). For Assistant Audit Officer, a CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, MBA (Finance) or similar is only 'desirable', not compulsory.
Entrance exams

What the work is like

Checking government bills, vouchers, payments and accounts against rules. Writing audit notes and reports on whether public money was spent properly. Jobs sit in the Indian Audit & Accounts Department under the CAG, the Defence Accounts Department (CGDA), the Controller General of Accounts and other ministries.

A day in the work
You reach the office, collect the files, bills and registers you have been given to check, and open the rules that apply. You compare each payment with the sanction order and the rules, and note anything that looks wrong or unexplained. On some days an audit team visits a department or office to look at its records, then you write up your findings in simple, careful language. Back at your desk you draft the audit note or reply, and a senior officer reads it before it goes further.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose any stream. Keep your Maths, English and reasoning strong, and read a newspaper every day. Commerce or Accountancy helps but is not required. If you want a state-cadre audit post, keep your Class 10 certificate showing the state's official language, because the notice asks for it.
  2. Step 2 · 3 yearsFinish a bachelor's degree in any subject. Aim to finish it in time, because SSC checks your degree and age as on a cut-off date (1 August 2026 in the 2026 cycle). Extra qualifications such as CA, CMA, CS or M.Com help for the Assistant Audit Officer post but are not compulsory.
  3. Step 3 · When the SSC notice comesApply online at ssc.gov.in. In 2026 the notice was dated 21 May and applications closed 22 June, later reopened to 25 June. Age limits (as on 1 August 2026) were 18–30 for Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer and 18–27 for Auditor and Accountant, with relaxations as per government rules. The fee was ₹100, and women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen paid nothing (fee details reported). You choose your post preferences while applying. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Tier-I (computer-based)A 100-question test on reasoning, general awareness, maths and English, with a time limit for each section and marks cut for wrong answers. Tier-I only decides who gets to sit Tier-II. Its marks do not count in the final merit list. In 2026 it ran from 30 September to 30 October.
  5. Step 5 · Tier-II (computer-based)Paper-I is for everyone. It covers maths, reasoning, English and general awareness, plus a computer knowledge test and a data-entry speed test, which are qualifying only. Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer candidates also take Paper-III (Finance and Economics), and their final merit comes from Paper-I and Paper-III marks. Tier-II was planned for December 2026 (tentative).
  6. Step 6 · Result, allotment and document checkSSC makes a merit list and gives you a post and department by your rank and preferences. Your certificates are then checked. I found no interview and no physical test for these posts (reported). You can be posted to offices anywhere in India. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Training and probationYou are trained in your department. In the CAG's offices this is done through its Regional Training Institutes and in-house courses. Assistant Audit/Accounts Officers must pass the Subordinate Audit/Accounts Service (SAS) Examination during probation to be confirmed. Direct-recruit Auditors and Accountants must pass a departmental exam within six chances, and the CAG rules show a two-year probation for direct-recruit Accountants. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Group B officer entry: Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer (Level 8)Any graduate, age 18–30. Selection is by SSC CGL Tier-I and Tier-II with the extra Paper-III. Two posts are in the 'state cadre' and need the state's official language. One is a 'central cadre' post. You must pass the SAS exam during probation.
  • Group C entry: Auditor / Accountant (Level 5)Any graduate, age 18–27. Selection is by SSC CGL Tier-I and Tier-II Paper-I only. Auditor posts are in offices under the CAG, in Defence Accounts (CGDA) and in other ministries. Accountant posts are in CAG offices, the Controller General of Accounts and other ministries. CAG rules also let Group C staff move up by passing departmental or SAS exams.

Your real chances

In 2026, SSC's tentative vacancy notice (24 September 2026) lists 10,731 vacancies for all CGL posts, not only audit posts. News reports say SSC stated that over 28 lakh people applied by June 2026 (reported). That is roughly 260 applicants per vacancy, though many applicants do not sit the exam. Audit and accounts posts are a part of this: the Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer posts total about 1,500 across three cadres, with 504 in at least one of the state-cadre posts shown in the notice. Other counts, such as 875 CGDA Auditor and 396 CAG Accountant posts, are reported figures.

What people earn

Official pay

Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer: Pay Level 8, ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100 basic scale (7th CPC), Group B gazetted. Auditor and Accountant: Pay Level 5, ₹29,200 to ₹92,300 basic scale, Group C. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances come on top. These are the pay levels in the SSC CGL 2026 notice.

Pay follows a fixed government scale, so it starts modest and grows steadily with yearly increments and promotions. Allowances depend on the city you are posted in, and the Group B officer post starts much higher than Group C.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a commerce student or a Chartered Accountant to become a government auditor.
Fact: Any graduate can apply through SSC CGL. A CA, CMA, CS or M.Com is only 'desirable' for Assistant Audit Officer, and Auditor and Accountant posts do not ask for it. Accounts knowledge does help in Paper-III and on the job.

For girls and students with disabilities

Women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen pay no application fee (reported). Reservations and age relaxations apply as per government rules. The notice says user departments identify which posts suit which disabilities, so check that list before you apply.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9For one month, keep a notebook of your family's or your own pocket-money spending. At month-end, check that income minus spending equals what is left. This is a small version of what an auditor does.
  • Class 10–12Open the CAG's website, find one audit report summary, and write 5 lines in your own words about what was checked and what was found.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free SWAYAM course on financial accounting or economics. Also read the SSC CGL syllabus on the official site so you know the exam early.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer posts were missing from some recent CGL cycles and came back in 2026 (reported). Do not count on them being in every year's notice. Auditor and Accountant posts are the steadier route.
  • Vacancy numbers in SSC's notices are 'tentative' and can change. The 2026 total was cut after the first notice (reported).
  • Officers of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service, the top service in the CAG, are selected through the UPSC Civil Services Exam, not SSC CGL.
  • Postings can be in any state, and some audit work means travelling to the offices being audited.
