Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with numbers, rules and documents
- Real responsibility and authority early in a career
- A stable Central government job with promotions
- Transfers and postings away from home
- The exam is very competitive, and many people need more than one attempt
- Pressure from targets, raids and difficult traders
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No subject is compulsory in Class 11–12. You can take Science, Commerce or Arts. Maths, English and general awareness matter a lot in the SSC exam, so keep them strong. Commerce or Economics helps you understand the work, but it is not needed.
- First degree
- Any bachelor's degree from a recognised university, 3 years or more. Final-year students can usually apply, but they must show the degree by the date the notice sets (reported; check the latest notice).
- Entrance exams
- SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam, held by the Staff Selection Commission. It has Tier 1 and Tier 2, both computer-based. After that come document verification and a medical check. Some posts in the CGL list also have a physical standards or walking test (reported; check the latest notice for this exact post).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Checking that businesses pay the right GST and Central Excise. Looking at returns, invoices and records. Visiting factories, warehouses and offices. Helping with audits and anti-evasion cases. Writing reports, issuing notices and assisting senior officers in investigations.
A day in the work
You reach the office and go through files and tax returns of the traders in your area. You check whether the invoices, stock and payments match. Some days you visit a factory or a warehouse with a senior officer to verify records. In the evening you write a report or a notice and update the file for your Superintendent. When a case needs more checking, the day runs long.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–12Take any stream you like. Build the habits the exam tests: quick arithmetic, logical reasoning, English reading and writing, and daily current affairs. Keep Class 10 and 12 marks steady, because you also need them for later forms.
- Step 2 · 3+ yearsComplete any bachelor's degree. The SSC asks only for a degree, not a particular subject. Check the latest CGL notice for the age limit. It has been 18–30 for Inspector posts, with relaxation for SC/ST, OBC, disability and ex-servicemen (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Tier 1Computer-based test with reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude and English. It is a qualifying screen, with negative marking (reported). The CGL notice usually comes out in the middle of the year, and the SSC publishes the exact dates each year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Tier 2A longer computer-based test with Maths, Reasoning, English, General Studies and a computer module. Your Tier 2 marks decide your rank and the post you get. Candidates can pick posts by preference, and Inspector (Central Excise) is one of the most sought-after Group B posts (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Verification and medicalDocument verification, then a medical examination. Some posts in the CGL list also have physical standards. Check whether your post needs them in the latest notice (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · TrainingNewly selected Inspectors are trained at NACIN (National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics) and then posted in a CBIC zone. Training is paid, because you are already a government employee (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · ProbationYou work under probation, usually 2 years, in a Central GST / Central Excise commissionerate (reported). After you are confirmed, you can be promoted through departmental promotions and exams (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in

A fixed government pay scale with allowances, so entry pay is similar everywhere, but allowances change with the city you are posted in and pay grows with promotions over the years.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women, SC/ST candidates, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen get an exam fee waiver or age relaxation, and quotas apply as per the notice (reported). For posts with physical standards, women have separate and easier standards. Whether a post is open to a particular disability is stated post by post in the notice, so check the latest one.

Good to know
- Every year's age limit, vacancies, exam dates and fees are fixed in that year's SSC notice. Always read the latest notice on ssc.gov.in before you plan.
- The job is a transferable Central government post. You may be posted in any city or zone covered by the department, so expect moves, and not always to your home state.
- Work can include raids, searches and visits to factories or godowns. It is not a pure desk job.
- Interested in the same department but another post? Look at the Customs Preventive Officer and Income Tax Inspector profiles.
