Coast Guard Yantrik (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics)
Maintain engines, electrical systems and electronics aboard Coast Guard ships and aircraft.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Hands-on work with real engines, electrical and electronic systems
- A uniformed, disciplined life with a purpose: protecting India's coastline and seas
- A steady government job with allowances, medical care and a pension-linked service structure
- Long periods at sea away from family, and transfers to different coastal stations
- Physical fitness tests and medical standards you must meet and keep meeting
- A single yearly chance: only a small number of seats, and the age window is just 18–22
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 10 pass from a COBSE-recognised board, then a full engineering diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunication (Radio/Power) Engineering from an AICTE-approved institution. No Class 11–12 stream is needed on the main route. The other route is Class 10 + Class 12 + a 2- or 3-year diploma.
- First degree
- 3- or 4-year AICTE-approved engineering diploma after Class 10. Or a 2- or 3-year diploma after Class 12.
- Entrance exams
- Coast Guard Enrolled Persons Test (CGEPT). Applications go through an SSC-run online portal. Stage-I is a computer-based test, followed by physical, medical and document stages.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Running, maintaining and repairing engines, generators, electrical systems, and radio, navigation and electronic equipment on Coast Guard ships and aircraft. Includes sea duty and shore postings.
A day in the work
On a ship, your day starts with checking engine rooms, generators or electronic equipment against the maintenance schedule. You log readings, fix faults and report problems to your senior. During patrols or drills you may be on watch, and when something breaks at sea you are the person who has to get it working again. On shore postings, the work is more regular: repairs, spares, paperwork and fitness training.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Pass Class 10 from a COBSE-recognised board. Build your Maths, Science and English, because the entrance test uses Class 10 level questions. Start running regularly too. You will need to clear 1.6 km in a set time later.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 10Do a full-time engineering diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunication Engineering at an AICTE-approved polytechnic. Another accepted route: Class 10, then Class 12, then a 2- or 3-year diploma. Check that your institution is AICTE-approved before you join.
- Step 3 · When the notice opensApply online for CGEPT, one post only. In the Oct 2026 notice, applications ran 6–21 October 2026. You must be born between 1 May 2005 and 1 May 2009 (18–22 years; relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC). If you do not yet hold your original diploma, you must upload a provisional certificate signed by your college head at Stage-II.
- Step 4 · Stage-IComputer-based online test. Expect Class 10 level Maths, Science, English, reasoning and general knowledge, plus a diploma-level paper in your own branch. Your marks here decide the merit order. Last cycle's pattern and cut-offs (about 100 questions, no negative marking) are reported by job sites, not confirmed from the notice. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Stage-IIAt an ICG recruitment centre: physical fitness test, adaptability test, document check and recruitment medical. For men, the 2026 notice asks for a 1.6 km run in 6 min 30 sec, 20 squats, 15 push-ups and 15 bent-knee sit-ups. All parts must be qualified. Reported height standard for men: 157 cm. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Stage-III and Stage-IVShortlisted candidates report to INS Chilka (Odisha) at their own expense for document checks and the pre-enrolment medical (Stage-III). Stage-IV is final verification of your educational certificates. Original diploma certificate is compulsory at Stage-III, or your candidature is cancelled.
- Step 7 · TrainingBasic training at INS Chilka (May 2027 for the 01/2027 batch), then sea training and professional training in your allotted trade. Your branch is decided by service needs and how you do in basic training. Satisfactory performance in training is compulsory.
Ways in
- Class 10 + 3- or 4-year diplomaThe most common route. Join a polytechnic after Class 10 and finish the diploma before or around the time you apply.
- Class 10 + Class 12 + 2- or 3-year diplomaFor students who finished Class 12 first, then did a shorter diploma, for example a lateral-entry or short diploma. The notice accepts this as well, but the age limit (18–22) still applies, so check dates carefully.
Your real chances
The Oct 2026 notice (for the 01/2027 batch) lists 60 tentative Yantrik vacancies: 28 Mechanical, 23 Electrical and 9 Electronics. I could not find an official count of applicants, so the exact competition is not known. Seats are few, so expect heavy competition.

What people earn
Pay Level 5 (7th CPC): basic ₹29,200 plus Yantrik pay of ₹6,200, plus Dearness Allowance and other allowances based on duty and place of posting (CGEPT 01/2027 notice, Oct 2026). The Coast Guard's recruitment rules list Level 5 as ₹29,200–92,300 for the post.
Pay starts at a fixed government level and rises with promotions, years of service, sea or remote-posting allowances and the place you are posted, not with the employer's profit.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
In the 2026 notice Yantrik was open to male candidates only. Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC and EWS, with upper-age relaxation of 5 years (SC/ST) and 3 years (OBC), and SC/ST candidates pay no exam fee. The notice sets physical and medical standards for all candidates and does not list any disability relaxation for this post.
Try it now
- Class 7–9This month, learn how one machine around you works, such as a fan, a bicycle or a mixer. Draw its parts and explain to a family member how it works. Strengthen your Class 9 Science and Maths along the way.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Start a simple running habit and track your 1.6 km time each week. Aim to get comfortably below 6 min 30 sec for the physical test. Also look at diploma options and check that each polytechnic is AICTE-approved. If you are 15 or above, register on MY Bharat to find volunteering projects.Open link ↗
- College or afterPick one free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in basic electrical, mechanical or electronics engineering. Finish its first module and solve the practice questions, as they match the diploma-level paper in the CGEPT.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Yantrik is an enrolled (non-officer) post in the Coast Guard, not an officer post. Officers come in through other entries such as Assistant Commandant.
- In the 2026 notice, Yantrik seats were filled only in the 01/2027 batch. Miss the cycle and you wait for the next notice. Watch the official ICG and SSC sites rather than forwarded messages.
- In the 2026 notice, Yantrik was open to men only. Women could apply for Navik (General Duty) but not Yantrik.
- Vacancies are tentative and can change. Branch and posting depend on service needs, and the job involves sea duty.
