Maths and Science in Class 10; PCM for B.Tech After Class 10 Government job

Facts checked 29/10/2026

Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a building, road or power system you helped supervise actually get built and work
  • A stable central government job with a fixed pay scale
  • Being outdoors and hands-on rather than only behind a desk
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Transfers, and postings that may be far from home. BRO jobs can be in remote border areas
  • Site work in heat, rain or dust, with pressure from deadlines and contractors
  • Competition is stiff and the exam is a single, once-a-year chance, so you may need more than one attempt
Class 11–12 subjects
After Class 10 with Maths and Science, you can take a 3-year diploma in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Or take Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) and then a degree (B.E./B.Tech) in one of those branches. Which qualification each post accepts is given post by post in the SSC notice.
First degree
3-year diploma (polytechnic) or 4-year B.E./B.Tech in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. For some posts a diploma holder also needs 2 years of work experience after the diploma.
Entrance exams
Junior Engineer Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC): Paper-I and Paper-II, both computer-based. It is held once a year, and the 2026 notice came out in September 2026.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Supervising building, road, bridge, dam, electrical and mechanical works. Checking drawings, measuring work done, checking material quality, preparing estimates and bills, and looking after maintenance of existing buildings and equipment. Working under Assistant Engineers and Executive Engineers.

A day in the work
You reach the site in the morning and walk the work with the contractor's team. You check the measurements against the drawings and make sure the cement, steel or wiring is of the right quality. Back in the office you update the measurement book, prepare bills and send a progress report to your Assistant Engineer. On some days there is a surprise inspection, a delayed supply or a repair call, so the plan changes.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–10Work hard at Maths and Science. After Class 10 you can join a 3-year diploma (polytechnic) in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Or you can choose PCM in Class 11–12 and aim for B.E./B.Tech.
  2. Step 2 · 3 to 4 yearsFinish your diploma or engineering degree from a recognised institute. Check each post's qualification in the SSC notice. For some posts and organisations, a diploma holder also needs 2 years of work experience done after the diploma. Internships and training during the course do not count as that experience.
  3. Step 3 · When the notice comesDo the One-Time Registration on ssc.gov.in. Then apply online in the short window. In 2026 it was 2 to 22 September. Check the age limit for the post you want. For 2026 it is reported as mostly up to 30 years, and up to 32 for CPWD posts. The 2025 notice gave 5 years' relaxation for SC/ST, 3 for OBC and 10 for persons with benchmark disabilities. Keep your Class 10 certificate ready, because your name and date of birth must match it exactly. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Paper-IA computer-based test of 200 marks. It has General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and your engineering subject. It only decides who goes on to Paper-II. In 2026 Paper-I was moved to 2–6 November and 30 November–1 December (reported; SSC posted a revised-dates notice on 26 October 2026). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Paper-IIA computer-based test of 300 marks, only on your engineering subject (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical). Your final rank and your department are decided from Paper-II marks and the posts you list as your preferences. There is no interview. The marks figure is reported; the dates for 2026 were still to be announced. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Document verification, and BRO physical testThe department you are allotted checks your original certificates after the final result. For Border Roads (BRO) posts there are also a Physical Efficiency Test and medical standards. Only men can apply for BRO posts. If you fail the BRO tests, SSC may not give you another post.
  7. Step 7 · Joining and probationYou join as a Junior Engineer, Group B (non-gazetted), and serve probation as that department's rules say. The length and kind of training depend on the department (reported). An older SSC notice says BRO recruits first get training at the GREF Centre in Pune. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Diploma route (starts after Class 10)Class 10 → 3-year diploma in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical → SSC JE exam. Many posts accept a diploma, but some ask for 2 years' experience after it. Read the post-wise table in the notice. This is the quickest way to become eligible.
  • Degree route (starts after Class 12)Class 12 with PCM → B.E./B.Tech in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical → SSC JE exam. A degree meets the qualification for all JE posts in the notice with no experience needed, and keeps other careers open.

Your real chances

In the 2025 exam, SSC shortlisted 15,607 candidates for Paper-II, and the final list had 1,731 vacancies. SSC's write-up does not give the total number who applied. For 2026, 1,748 tentative vacancies were announced (reported), and the figure was later revised (reported).

What people earn

Official pay

Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 in the pay matrix (7th CPC), Group B non-gazetted, plus allowances. This is from SSC's 2025 notice. The 2026 cycle is reported to carry the same pay level.

Pay starts at a fixed government scale and rises with years and promotions. The final take-home depends on allowances, which change with the posting city, and on whether you work in a field or remote posting.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must have a B.Tech to become an SSC Junior Engineer.
Fact: Many JE posts accept a 3-year diploma, and some also ask for 2 years' experience after it. The post-wise table in the notice has the exact rule for each organisation.

For girls and students with disabilities

Women can apply for all posts except BRO, which only takes men. Persons with benchmark disabilities get a 10-year age relaxation. Only some disabilities are listed as suitable for each post in the notice, and BRO posts are excluded. JE posts are not identified as suitable for blind or low-vision candidates, except JE (Telecom) in the Department of Telecommunications.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Build a small bridge from ice-cream sticks or cardboard and test how much weight it holds. Or light a bulb with a battery and wires. Notice which kind of problem you enjoy: structures, circuits or machines.
  • Class 10–12Watch the first two lectures of a free NPTEL course on basic electrical circuits or engineering mechanics. See if the subject holds your interest.Open link ↗
  • College or afterOpen the SSC website and look at the JE syllabus, previous year question papers and mock test pages. Try one Paper-I set to see where you stand.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The SSC JE post is Group B (non-gazetted), not a clerical job. Civil, Electrical and Mechanical candidates compete in separate merit lists, and Electrical and Mechanical candidates can choose the combined JE (E&M) posts.
  • You list your department preferences, and you cannot change the post later if you fail a physical or medical test for it. Think carefully before choosing BRO.
  • The vacancy figure moves during the year. In 2026, 1,748 tentative vacancies were announced, and a later SSC vacancy notice is reported to have reduced it to about 1,699.
  • The 2026 notice carries a line saying that women are encouraged to apply.
