Junior Engineering Assistant / Technician (PSU)
Supports plant operations and maintenance as a skilled technician in a public sector unit.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with real machines, tools and instruments rather than only on paper
- Fixing problems and seeing a plant run again because of your work
- A stable, regular job with a clear path of promotions
- Shift work, including nights and holidays, and sometimes remote or hot, noisy sites
- Postings can be far from home, and transfers are common
- Selection is competitive and openings are not guaranteed every year, so you may wait or try several PSUs
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 10 pass is the starting point. Most state polytechnics ask for Maths and Science in Class 10, but rules differ by state, so check your state's diploma admission notice. Some students join the diploma after Class 12 Science or after ITI, directly into the 2nd year (lateral entry). Check whether the PSU notice accepts that route.
- First degree
- 3-year full-time Diploma in Engineering (for example Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation or Chemical) from a recognised board or institute.
- Entrance exams
- There is no single national exam. Each PSU runs its own recruitment test, usually an online Computer Based Test (CBT). In 2026, POWERGRID's Diploma Trainee (Electrical) CBT was held on 1 July 2026 under Advertisement CC/01/2026.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Keeping a power station, substation, refinery or factory running: checking and repairing machines, motors, switchgear and instruments, following safety rules, filling in logs, and helping engineers with tests and shutdowns.
A day in the work
You reach the plant or substation for your shift and read the handover notes from the last team. You walk the equipment with a checklist, listening for odd sounds, checking readings and tagging anything that looks wrong. When a motor trips or a meter drifts, you work with a senior engineer to isolate it safely, fix it and log the job. Before you leave, you fill in the maintenance register and brief the next shift.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Study Maths and Science well. Most diploma admissions run on Class 10 marks or a state polytechnic entrance, so find your state's polytechnic admission page early in Class 10.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 10Do a full-time 3-year diploma in the branch your target PSU hires for. Keep your marks high. POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement asked for at least 70% for General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates, and pass marks for SC, ST and PwBD. Other PSUs set their own cut-offs, often 60%.
- Step 3 · After the diplomaWatch the careers pages of PSUs such as POWERGRID, BEL and CPCL, and apply online when a notice comes. POWERGRID's 2026 notice (CC/01/2026) was dated 17 April 2026, and applications ran about three weeks (reported). Notices are not guaranteed every year. Some posts are for freshers; some ask for experience.
- Step 4 · Computer Based TestFor POWERGRID Diploma Trainee, the CBT carries 100% weightage for final merit. For General and EWS candidates, you must score at least 30% in each part and 40% overall. For reserved categories it is 25% in each part and 30% overall. The test has about 170 questions in two hours, with a technical part and an aptitude part, and wrong answers lose marks (pattern reported). The 2026 notice for the Diploma Trainee (Electrical) post lists no interview.
- Step 5 · Merit list and medicalCandidates are ranked by CBT marks, region by region. In POWERGRID's Northern Region-I list, the shortlisting cut-off for the General category was about 63% in the CBT (notice dated 28 September 2026). Shortlisted candidates then go through document checks and a pre-employment medical examination. Some posts also have a qualifying skill or trade test.
- Step 6 · Training and joiningSelected candidates usually join as trainees for about a year, on a stipend-level pay, and are then absorbed as Junior Engineer or Junior Technician in a regular pay scale. There is often a service agreement or bond (reported). Check the notice for the exact terms. (reported — check with the official body)
- Optional · LaterMany diploma holders do a B.Tech through lateral entry or part-time study later, or move up by internal promotion. Note that for POWERGRID Diploma Trainee posts, holding a B.Tech or BE at the time of applying or joining is not allowed. Think before you take that path.
Ways in
- Diploma route (main route)Class 10, then a 3-year diploma, then a PSU Diploma Trainee or Junior Engineering Assistant test. This is the route in this profile.
- Class 12 Science or ITI, then lateral entry into diploma 2nd yearYou can enter the 2nd year of a diploma after Class 12 Science or ITI, so you finish in 2 years. Some PSU notices accept this and calculate marks across the semesters you studied (reported). Check each notice.
- ITI route (technician posts)Class 10, then a 2-year ITI in a trade, then often an apprenticeship. This leads to posts like Technician 'C' at BEL or Junior Technician Trainee at POWERGRID. These need ITI, not a diploma (reported).
- Diploma apprenticeship firstSome PSUs, such as BEL in 2026, take recent diploma holders as 1-year apprentices through the NATS portal. This gives experience and a stipend, but it is not a permanent job (reported).

What people earn
PSU technician and assistant posts use company pay scales (IDA), not Pay Levels. For POWERGRID Diploma Trainee in 2026, the reported pay was ₹24,000 basic plus allowances during the 1-year training, then Junior Engineer Gr-IV in the scale ₹25,000–3%–1,17,500 (IDA) (reported). Perks such as DA, HRA, PF, gratuity and medical cover come on top. Please check the pay section of the official advertisement.
Pay starts modestly as a trainee and grows with grade promotions, shift and field allowances, and years of service, and it differs from one PSU to another.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement says women are encouraged to apply. It sets pass marks (not 70%) for SC, ST and PwBD diploma holders, and it lists reserved vacancies, including for persons with benchmark disabilities. Some posts in other PSUs, such as CPCL's Production post in 2026, were reportedly closed to women because of night shifts and hazardous work.
Try it now
- Class 7–9With a teacher or parent nearby, build a simple circuit using a battery, a small bulb and a switch. Then try adding a second bulb in series and in parallel and see what changes. Use batteries only, never mains electricity.
- Class 10–12Open a free introductory electrical or mechanical course on NPTEL or SWAYAM and finish its first two weeks of lessons. This shows you if you enjoy the subject before you pick a diploma branch.Open link ↗

Good to know
- The job title changes by company. POWERGRID says Diploma Trainee. CPCL says Junior Engineering Assistant. BEL says Engineering Assistant Trainee and Technician 'C' (reported).
- Read each notice carefully. CPCL's 2026 Junior Engineering Assistant-IV notice reportedly asked for 3 years of industry experience, so it was not for fresh diploma holders. POWERGRID's Diploma Trainee notice was for diploma holders.
- POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement does not allow B.Tech, BE, M.Tech or ME holders to apply for Diploma Trainee posts, even if they also hold a diploma.
- Vacancies are region-wise, and you may be posted far from home. Candidates are advised to apply for one region only, because the CBT is held on one day for all regions (reported).
