RRB Junior Engineer
Maintain railway tracks, signals, electrical and mechanical systems in Indian Railways.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Hands-on engineering that you can see working on real trains and tracks
- A stable government job with a clear pay level and promotion path
- Being responsible for keeping lakhs of passengers safe
- Transfers and postings far from home, sometimes in remote areas
- Shift work, night duty and emergency call-outs
- A tough, competitive exam with few seats and no guarantee of a notice every year
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Start after Class 10 with a 3-year engineering diploma, or after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) for a B.Tech. Strong Maths and basic science help in both routes and in the exam.
- First degree
- A 3-year diploma in the branch the post asks for (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Signal & Telecom or a related branch). A B.E./B.Tech in the same discipline is also accepted.
- Entrance exams
- The RRB Junior Engineer exam, held by the Railway Recruitment Boards under a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN). It has two computer-based tests (CBT), then document verification and a medical exam.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Looking after and repairing railway tracks and bridges, signalling and telecom, electrical and traction systems, and coaches, wagons and sheds. You supervise technicians, check drawings and estimates, inspect work on site and keep safety records.
A day in the work
A track JE might start by walking a section of line with the gang, checking for cracks, loose fittings or worn sleepers. Then they note down repairs and give work to the technicians. After that comes paperwork: reports, material requests and safety records. In a workshop or shed, a mechanical or electrical JE checks coaches or locomotives, signs off repairs and fixes faults that come up. When there is a breakdown or a night block, you may be called out at odd hours.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10Pick your route. You can do a 3-year diploma at a polytechnic after Class 10, or take PCM in Class 11–12 and then B.Tech. Choose a branch the railway actually recruits for: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Signal & Telecom.
- Step 2 · 3 years (diploma) or 4 years (B.Tech)Complete the diploma or degree in the right branch. Each railway post lists the branches it accepts, so check that your branch matches the post. In CEN 03/2024 a B.E./B.Tech in the same discipline was accepted in place of the diploma.
- Step 3 · When a notice comesApply online when the CEN is published on the RRB websites. A candidate may apply to only one RRB, with one common application. Notices do not come every year, and the number of posts changes. The latest cycle, CEN 04/2026, had applications from 14 August to 13 September 2026 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · CBT-1 (screening)A computer-based test of 100 questions in 90 minutes. It covers Maths, Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science, with 1/3 negative marking. It only decides who moves on to CBT-2. For CEN 04/2026 it was scheduled for 27–28 October 2026 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · CBT-2 (technical)A computer-based test of 150 questions in 120 minutes. 100 of them are technical questions from your own branch. The rest are General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Computers and Environment (reported). This stage decides your merit. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Document verification and medicalYour certificates for education, age and category are checked. Then you take a medical exam. Each post has a medical standard (such as A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1) listed in the notice, so check the one for your post.
- Step 7 · Appointment, training and probationYou are appointed at Pay Level 6 in a zonal railway or production unit. Expect a period of training and probation before you are confirmed. The length depends on the department and zone. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Diploma routeClass 10, then a 3-year diploma in a matching branch at a polytechnic. You can sit the RRB JE exam straight after the diploma. This is the quicker and cheaper way in.
- B.Tech routeClass 12 with PCM, then a 4-year B.E./B.Tech in a matching branch. It takes a year longer but keeps other options open, such as PSUs, GATE-based jobs and private engineering.

Pay rises with promotions and years of service. Allowances such as housing and travel depend on the city of posting, and a few departments carry extra duty allowances.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disabilities, and age relaxations apply as per the notice. The post-wise table in CEN 03/2024 shows which types of disability each post is suitable for. Many posts are marked not suitable for blind or low-vision candidates, so check the table for your post.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Build a simple working circuit with a battery, switch and bulb. Then draw how a railway signal could use it. Do the free science and maths lessons for your class on DIKSHA.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Visit a polytechnic or ITI near you, or read the diploma branch list on your state technical board's website. Compare Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, and think about which one you would enjoy. Practise Class 10 Maths and science until they feel easy.

Good to know
- Vacancies change every cycle. CEN 03/2024 had 7,951 posts in total (official). CEN 04/2026 was reported at about 4,000 posts (3,993, later revised to 4,029).
- The upper age limit was 33 in normal course. In CEN 03/2024 it was 36 because of a one-time Covid relaxation (official). For CEN 04/2026 it was reported as 18–33 as on 1 January 2027. Always check the age limit and relaxations in the latest notice.
- Your diploma or degree branch must match the post. A Civil diploma will not fit a Signal & Telecom post, so read the post-wise table in the notice before you pick a course.
- Postings can be in any zone under the RRB you chose, so be ready to live away from home.
