Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Engineer (BHEL)
Designs and manufactures turbines, boilers and generators for power and industry.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing huge machines you worked on being built and tested
- Solving practical problems with real parts, drawings and teams
- A stable government company with a long-term career and training in the first year
- Postings can be at factories or far-off power-plant sites, and you may be transferred
- A service bond: leaving early means paying ₹5 lakh (2025 notice)
- Few seats and irregular recruitment; you may have to wait for the next notice and keep your marks and age in range
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is the usual way into a B.Tech, because engineering entrance exams like JEE Main and state CETs are built on these subjects. BHEL itself only asks for the degree, not your Class 12 subjects.
- First degree
- Full-time B.E./B.Tech, 4 years, in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Chemical or Metallurgy Engineering. A five-year integrated master's or dual degree in these fields also counted in the 2025 notice. BHEL also lists some allied branches as equivalent. Check the current notice.
- Entrance exams
- BHEL's own Computer Based Examination (CBE), followed by an interview. This is the process in BHEL's Engineer Trainee notice of 2025. For college entry after Class 12: JEE Main or a state entrance exam.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Helping design, build, test and install heavy power equipment such as turbines, boilers, generators and transformers. You work in BHEL factories and at power-plant project sites. The jobs include shop-floor production, quality checks, testing, project engineering and commissioning.
A day in the work
Morning starts at the factory or project site with a quick meeting about what has to be finished that day, such as a turbine casing, a boiler part or a generator test. You walk the shop floor, check drawings against the actual part and talk to supervisors and quality inspectors when something does not match. After lunch you might sit at a computer to review a design change, plan a test or chase a supplier for a delayed part. Engineers on project sites spend more time outdoors, helping install and commission equipment at power plants.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Build a feel for how machines work: forces, heat, electricity and how things are made.
- Step 2 · After Class 12 · 4 yearsGet into a full-time B.E./B.Tech in an eligible branch through JEE Main or a state entrance exam. Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics have the most Engineer Trainee posts. In 2025 the split was 70, 25 and 20 posts, with 25 for Civil and 5 each for Chemical and Metallurgy. Marks in the degree matter, so check the minimum percentage in each notice.
- Step 3 · Final year or afterWatch careers.bhel.in for the Engineer Trainee notice. Apply online only. In 2025 the age limit was 27 years as on 1 Feb 2025, or 29 with a 2-year full-time PG in engineering or management. The fee was ₹1,072 for UR/EWS/OBC and ₹472 for SC/ST/PwD/Ex-Servicemen.
- Step 4 · Computer Based ExamEveryone appears for BHEL's CBE. Candidates are shortlisted for interview in order of merit, about 5 for each vacancy in each discipline and category (1:5 ratio, 2025 notice).
- Step 5 · Interview and merit listShortlisted candidates are interviewed. The final merit list is said to be CBE 75% and interview 25% (reported, from a coaching-site summary of the 2025 notice). PwD candidates get up to 40% relaxation below the cut-off to be shortlisted for interview. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Documents and medicalYour documents are checked and you must be medically fit, as per the notice. The 2025 notice asked for sound health. Check the exact standards in the current notice. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · 1 year as Engineer TraineeYou train for one year on a basic pay of ₹50,000 (scale ₹50,000–1,60,000, 2025 notice). After successful training you are absorbed as an Engineer (grade E1) at a basic pay of ₹60,000 (scale ₹60,000–1,80,000). There is a service bond. Leaving before it ends means paying ₹5,00,000 as liquidated damages (2025 notice).
Ways in
- Engineer Trainee (the main route)B.Tech in an eligible branch, then BHEL's computer-based exam and interview. This is the route described above.
- Supervisor Trainee (a different, supervisor-level post)Needs a full-time diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or Electronics with at least 65% marks (60% for SC/ST). Selection is by the exam and document check, with no interview. This is not the engineer post, but it is a way into BHEL after Class 10 and a diploma (2025 notice).
- Fixed-tenure Project Engineer (experienced people)BHEL sometimes advertises 2-year project engineer posts for people with at least 12 months of work experience. An example is FTA 01/2026 for the Electronics Division in Bengaluru. These are fixed-term jobs, not permanent ones.
Your real chances
In the 2025 notice, BHEL advertised 150 Engineer Trainee posts: Mechanical 70, Electrical 25, Civil 25, Electronics 20, Chemical 5 and Metallurgy 5. Only about 5 candidates per post were called for interview (1:5 ratio). We could not find an official count of how many people applied, so treat it as very competitive but do not trust unofficial numbers.

What people earn
Engineer Trainee (ET) grade: BHEL company scale ₹50,000–1,60,000, with basic pay ₹50,000 during the one-year training. After training, Engineer grade E1: scale ₹60,000–1,80,000, with basic pay ₹60,000, plus allowances and benefits (2025 notice). BHEL's own pay-scale sheet lists the same two scales.
Reported — check the official notice.
Pay starts on a fixed company scale and grows with grade and promotions. How far you go depends on your performance, years of service and whether you move into project, design or management roles.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The Engineer Trainee and Supervisor Trainee posts were identified for people with locomotor disability (including leprosy cured, dwarfism and acid attack victims), low vision, and deaf or hard-of-hearing (including speech and language disability). In 2025, 7 of the 150 ET posts were set aside for PwD candidates. PwD candidates get up to 40% relaxation below the cut-off to be shortlisted for interview and pay no exam fee. Seats are also reserved for SC, ST, OBC and EWS as per government rules. We did not find any rule specific to women in the notice.

Good to know
- The 2025 Engineer Trainee notice (Advt. 03/2025) is the latest regular one we could open on BHEL's own site. BHEL does not recruit every year in the same way, so always check careers.bhel.in for the current notice, dates, age limit and marks required. One unofficial website claims a 2026 notice with a 28 November 2026 deadline. We could not confirm this on BHEL's site.
- BHEL is a government company (PSU), so its pay is on its own company scale, not the central government pay-level system.
- Postings are at BHEL's factories and at power-sector project sites. In 2025 the factory locations listed included Trichy, Ranipet, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, Haridwar and Bhopal. You may be moved between places during your career.
- Interested in this kind of work but not through BHEL? NTPC, SAIL, Power Grid and private manufacturers also hire mechanical and electrical engineers.
