Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving circuit and power problems that have clear, checkable answers
  • Seeing machines, power lines or plants you helped design working in the real world
  • A mix of office design work and hands-on site visits
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • PSU postings can be in remote or hot places, and transfers are common
  • Several years of demanding study in Maths and Physics, plus months of GATE preparation
  • Site work can mean long hours, shifts or being on call, with heat, dust and noise
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Engineering colleges and PSU notices usually ask for a minimum percentage, commonly 60% in B.E./B.Tech.
First degree
B.Tech or BE in Electrical Engineering, 4 years, including labs, projects and an internship.
Entrance exams
JEE Main for admission to NITs and other engineering colleges (through JoSAA counselling). GATE, run by IISc and the IITs, for PSU trainee posts and M.Tech admission.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing and maintaining power systems, substations, motors, control panels and building wiring; testing equipment; reading drawings; working with site teams, contractors and clients; site visits in heat, dust and rain.

A day in the work
A typical day might start with checking the status of a substation, a motor or a set of panels, and reading the drawings for the day's work. You may spend the morning on calculations or design software, then go to the site to check installation or testing with a team of technicians. Afternoons often bring reports, meetings with contractors and fixing problems that came up on site.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Strong Maths and Physics make the entrance exams and the first year of the degree much easier.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 with PCM at the percentage your target colleges ask for. Sit JEE Main and take part in JoSAA counselling to get a seat in an NIT or another government engineering college. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 4 yearsComplete a B.Tech or BE in Electrical Engineering. Use the labs, do a small project on motors or inverters, and take a summer internship if you can.
  4. Step 4 · Final yearRegister for GATE, which is held once a year, usually in February. Choose the Electrical Engineering (EE) paper if you want PSU trainee posts. GATE 2026 was held on 7, 8, 14 and 15 February 2026.
  5. Step 5 · After GATEApply to PSUs that recruit through GATE, such as POWERGRID. Selection usually combines the GATE score with a group discussion and an interview, and the weightage differs by employer. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 1-year trainingJoin as a paid Engineer Trainee. After training, POWERGRID absorbs trainees as Engineers at the E2 pay scale, according to its 2026 notice.

Your real chances

In GATE 2026, about 81,947 candidates registered and 65,801 appeared for the Electrical Engineering paper. Across all GATE papers, about 7.97 lakh appeared. These are applicant numbers, not seats or PSU vacancies, which are set in each year's notice.

What people earn

Pay in PSUs follows fixed scales that rise with experience and grade, while private-sector pay depends on the employer, the city and the kind of work, and it can vary a lot between fresher and experienced engineers.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need GATE to become an electrical engineer.
Fact: GATE is the main route into PSU trainee posts and M.Tech study. Many electrical engineers join private firms through campus placement or on-the-job hiring.

For girls and students with disabilities

PSU trainee notices from POWERGRID exempt SC, ST and PwBD candidates from the application fee, and OBC candidates must be non-creamy layer to claim OBC reservation. Reservation rules for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates apply in these posts, as set by each notice.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Build a simple circuit with a battery, a bulb and a switch at home. Then add a second bulb in series and in parallel and note what changes.
  • Class 10–12Watch the first lectures of the free NPTEL course on the fundamentals of electrical engineering. You can learn without paying; the certificate is optional and paid.Open link ↗
  • College or afterJoin your college's electrical or robotics club, or take part in a small project on motors, solar pumps or inverters. Document what you built and what failed.

Good to know

  • PSU trainee posts are open only to those with a valid GATE score in the right paper. Each year's official notice sets the vacancies and the rules, so check the notice for your year.
  • Many electrical engineers join private firms, factories, consultancies and power companies through campus placement. In that route, skills, projects and internships matter more than GATE.
  • Electrical engineering covers a wide range of work, from power grids and renewable energy to motors, automation and electronics. You can narrow down during the degree.
