Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Large, real structures: towers, lines and substations you can see and walk around
  • Problem-solving with physics and maths, in design work and in fixing faults
  • The feeling that the work keeps lights on for millions of people
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Postings can be in remote or far-off places, and transfers are part of the job
  • A mandatory service bond of three years after training, with a penalty for leaving early
  • The route depends on GATE, which is a tough national exam, and you cannot repeat it until next year
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). This is the usual way into a B.Tech in Electrical or Electronics. POWERGRID asks for a B.E./B.Tech with at least 60% marks (reported). The exact rule is in each year's notice.
First degree
B.E./B.Tech in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, 4 years. POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee notice also lists Civil and Computer Science. Civil engineers handle tower foundations and substation buildings.
Entrance exams
GATE, in the paper that matches your branch (EE for Electrical, EC for Electronics). GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras and runs on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. POWERGRID then runs its own group discussion and interview.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Planning and designing transmission lines and substations. Overseeing construction of towers, lines and transformers. Testing and commissioning equipment. Keeping the grid running through maintenance and fault-fixing. Working with contractors, state utilities and load-dispatch centres.

A day in the work
You might start at a site office, reading drawings for a new 400 kV line. Then you drive out to check a tower foundation or an erected tower with the contractor's team. Back at the office, you review test reports for a transformer being commissioned at a substation. If a fault trips a line, the day can change at once, and you coordinate with the control room until supply is back.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Electricity, magnetism and circuits in Class 12 Physics are the base for everything later.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Get into a B.Tech in Electrical or Electronics through JEE Main, a state entrance exam, or a college's own admission route. Pick a college where you can keep your marks high. POWERGRID asks for at least 60% in the degree (reported).
  3. Step 3 · 4 yearsStudy power systems, machines, protection and high-voltage engineering. Do internships at a substation or power utility if you can.
  4. Step 4 · Final year (or after)Register for and appear in GATE, in the EE or EC paper. GATE 2027 is in February 2027, and the result is due on 19 March 2027. For POWERGRID's 2026 recruitment, only the GATE 2026 score counted. Older scores were not accepted, so you must plan your GATE year with care.
  5. Step 5 · After GATE resultApply online on powergrid.in in the window given in that year's notice. The 2027 notice is Advt. No. CC/03/2026, dated 24.09.2026. Read the notice for vacancies, age limit and the application window. In the 2026 notice, the upper age limit was 28 years as on 31.12.2025.
  6. Step 6 · Group Discussion and InterviewCandidates are shortlisted category-wise by their normalised GATE marks. The final score is 85% GATE, 3% group discussion and 12% personal interview. You can take the GD and interview in Hindi or English. A psychometric test may be used as an input to the interview (reported).
  7. Step 7 · Training and bondYou join as an Engineer Trainee on a basic pay of ₹40,000 a month plus allowances, with a training period (about one year, reported). After training you are absorbed as an Engineer in the E2 scale. You sign a bond to complete training and serve at least three years.

Ways in

  • Engineer Trainee through GATE (main route)B.Tech in Electrical or Electronics, then GATE, then POWERGRID's GD and interview. This leads to an officer-level (executive) post in the E2 scale.
  • Diploma Trainee routePOWERGRID also hires Diploma Trainees with a diploma, through its own computer-based test. The 2026 notice was Advt. No. CC/01/2026 (reported). This is a non-executive post with lower pay. It still works on the same lines and substations.
  • State transmission companies and other utilitiesState transmission companies and state electricity boards recruit electrical engineers through their own notices. Each state has its own rules. Check the official website of the utility you are interested in.

What people earn

Official pay

Engineer Trainee: basic pay ₹40,000 a month plus IDA, HRA and perks at 12% of basic during training. The 2026 notice gives the approximate cost to company as ₹11 lakh a year during training and ₹22.5 lakh a year after training. This varies with posting location. After training you are absorbed as an Engineer in the E2 scale (about ₹40,000–1,40,000, reported). This is the 2026 notice. Check the 2027 notice for any change.

Pay starts at a fixed PSU scale and grows with promotions and years of service, and your location and posting can change the total.

Myth and fact

Myth: A B.Tech degree and good college marks are enough to get into POWERGRID.
Fact: For Engineer Trainee posts, GATE is the main gate. Your GATE score decides 85% of your final score. Only the GATE score of that recruitment year counted in the 2026 notice.

For girls and students with disabilities

For Engineer Trainee (Electrical) in 2026, POWERGRID listed suitable PwBD sub-categories: deaf and hard of hearing, certain locomotor disabilities, and specific learning disability and mental illness. The bond amount is half for SC/ST/PwBD candidates (₹2.5 lakh instead of ₹5 lakh). Vacancies are reserved by category (UR, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). Check each year's notice for the exact numbers.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Find out how electricity reaches your home. Trace it from the meter back to the local substation and the high-tension lines you can see. Write a one-page note on what you found.
  • Class 10–12Revise the Class 12 Physics chapters on electric current, magnetism and alternating current. Use free lessons on DIKSHA.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL course on power systems or electrical machines. Then solve a few past GATE EE questions on the same topic.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • POWERGRID does not hold its own written exam for Engineer Trainees. Your GATE score carries 85% of the weight, so GATE preparation matters most.
  • The number of vacancies changes every year. In the GATE 2025 cycle, POWERGRID listed 149 Electrical posts (reported). Always check the latest notice on powergrid.in.
  • Work often means site postings far from big cities. Transmission lines go through hills, deserts and remote areas. You should be ready to move.
  • Not sure about GATE? A B.Tech in Electrical also leads to NTPC, BHEL, state utilities and private power companies.
