Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Being outdoors and talking to farmers
- Seeing a crop recover after your advice
- A stable government job with a clear purpose
- Regular transfers and postings in far villages
- Hot weather, travel and field work, even in monsoon
- Paperwork and targets can crowd out the farm advice, and exams may be few and competitive
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry, plus Biology, Maths or Agriculture. ICAR's own rules ask for at least three of these core subjects and a minimum aggregate. Check the current ICAR bulletin for the exact marks. State agricultural universities can set their own rules for their state seats.
- First degree
- B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, 4 years. Horticulture and some allied 4-year degrees are accepted for some posts, so read each notice.
- Entrance exams
- State Public Service Commission or state agriculture department exam (posts are called Agriculture Officer, Assistant Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Development Officer or Block Agriculture Officer, depending on the state). Or the IBPS Specialist Officer exam for the bank post of Agriculture Field Officer (Scale I).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Visiting farms and villages; advising farmers on seeds, soil, pests and water; running government schemes and subsidy paperwork; organising demonstrations and training; checking inputs like seed and fertiliser; reporting to the block or district office. In a bank, an Agriculture Field Officer looks at farm loans and visits borrowers.
A day in the work
You reach the block office around 10 and check messages about a pest attack in two villages. By late morning you are on a motorbike or in a department jeep, standing in a farmer's field with a leaf in your hand, explaining what to spray and what not to. After lunch you sit with forms for crop loans, seed subsidy or a training camp and update your reports. Sometimes the evening goes into a meeting with farmer groups or a call from the district officer.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB), or PCM, as your school allows. If your school offers Agriculture as a subject, it helps. Keep your Class 12 marks safe, because every agriculture university asks for a minimum percentage.
- Step 2 · Class 12For seats in ICAR institutes and the ICAR share of seats in state agricultural universities, appear in CUET (ICAR-UG), run by the NTA. In 2025-26 this share was 20% of seats at those universities. Applications usually open in January–February and the exam is in May. The rest of the seats in state universities go through the state's own test or merit list. Check your state's rules. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 4 yearsB.Sc (Hons) Agriculture at an ICAR-accredited or state-recognised college. You study soil, crops, plant protection, farm economics and extension, with field work and a rural experience year. Some states want a degree from a recognised or accredited university, so check this before you join a college. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · After the degreeState route: the state PSC or agriculture department publishes a notice when posts are vacant. Most states hold a written test in agriculture subjects. Some add an interview. Age limits and pay levels differ widely from state to state, so read your own state's notice. Many states allow a higher upper age limit than central jobs (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Bank route: PrelimsIBPS Specialist Officer (CRP SPL-XVI, 2026 cycle) for Agriculture Field Officer, Scale I. You need a 4-year degree in agriculture or an allied subject, and the age must be 20–30 as on 1 July 2026. The online preliminary exam was set for August 2026. IBPS listed about 190 AFO vacancies at first. Aggregator sites say it was later raised to 370 on 20 July 2026, which I could not confirm on IBPS's own page. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Mains and interviewThose who clear prelims write the online mains. This is followed by an interview and document checks. Posts are then allotted to the participating banks (the 2026 mains was reported for 1 November 2026). Interview call letters ask for proof of age, photo ID and degree certificates, so keep originals ready. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Training and probationAfter selection you join with a training and probation period under the state department or the bank. You are posted to a block, district or bank branch. Promotion usually comes with years of service and departmental exams, as the department's rules say. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- State government Agriculture OfficerB.Sc Agriculture, then the state PSC or department exam for your own state. Work is in your state's blocks and districts, and you usually stay in that state. Pay and age limits are set by the state.
- Bank Agriculture Field Officer (IBPS)B.Sc Agriculture or an allied 4-year degree, then the IBPS Specialist Officer exam. It is a public sector bank job (Scale I) with farm lending and rural visits, not a government department job. You can be posted anywhere in India.

What people earn
IBPS Agriculture Field Officer, Scale I (2026 notification): basic pay ₹48,480-2000/7-62,480-2340/2-67,160-2680/7-85,920, plus allowances and perquisites as the bank pays them. State Agriculture Officer pay depends on the state. Aggregator sites list state pay levels ranging from about Level 6 to Level 10 (reported). Check your state PSC notice.
Pay starts modest to decent and grows steadily with promotions; a state government post and a bank post pay differently, and bigger-city postings bring higher allowances.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
IBPS and state PSCs apply reservation for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates, and persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) are considered as the notice allows, with age relaxation under government rules. Check the exact categories in each notice. Some states set aside posts for women; for example, Odisha reserved 40 of 118 Assistant Agriculture Officer posts for women in 2025-26 (reported).
Try it now
- Class 7–9Grow a few vegetables or a tulsi and mint pot at home. Note the dates of sowing, watering and first leaves for one month, and compare two plants given different amounts of sunlight.
- Class 10–12Explore the government's Farmers' Portal to see what schemes, mandi prices and weather advisories farmers actually use. Pick one scheme and write half a page on who it helps.Open link ↗
- College or afterBrowse free agriculture-related courses on SWAYAM and finish one short module. Also visit a nearby Krishi Vigyan Kendra or block agriculture office and ask if students can observe a farmer training day.Open link ↗
Good to know
- "Agriculture Officer" is not one national post. Each state has its own titles, pay levels, age limits and exams. Always read the latest notice for your state.
- Government jobs in this field open in waves. Some years a state may announce few posts or none, so do not plan around a single date.
- The IBPS Agriculture Field Officer post needs a 4-year degree. A 3-year B.Sc in general science is not enough.
- If you also like research or teaching, M.Sc Agriculture and ICAR exams lead to the ICAR scientist path.
