Studies groundwater, rivers and rainfall to manage water supply and floods.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Outdoor field visits, maps and reading the land
- Solving the puzzle of where water is and how it moves, using data
- Work that matters to villages, farms and cities
- Field postings and transfers across India, sometimes in remote or hot areas
- About 5 years of study after Class 12, then a tough exam with very few posts
- Much of the work is slow monitoring and report-writing, not instant results
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Science (Physics, Chemistry and Maths or Biology) is the usual way into a B.Sc in Geology or Earth Science. Entry rules differ by university, so check the one you want (reported). Geography and Maths help a lot.
- First degree
- B.Sc in Geology, Applied Geology or Earth Science (3 years), then M.Sc in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology (2 years). For the central government hydrogeologist post at CGWB, UPSC asks for a master's degree in one of these subjects.
- Entrance exams
- For the government route: UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (Prelims, Main, Interview). For M.Sc admission: university entrance tests, or IIT JAM Geology for IIT programmes (reported).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Measuring water levels in wells, mapping underground water-bearing layers (aquifers), testing water quality, planning rainwater harvesting and recharge, tracking rainfall and river flow, and writing reports that help governments plan drinking water, farming and flood or drought response.
A day in the work
On a field day you might drive to a village, lower a measuring tape into an observation well to note the water level, and fill sample bottles for the lab. CGWB checks these wells four times a year, so such visits are routine work. Back at the regional office, you plot the readings on maps and graphs and compare them with last year. In the afternoon you might write a report on a block where the water table is falling and suggest where check dams or recharge pits could help. On some days you also answer questions from state officials or farmers.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Take Science in Class 11–12. Maths plus Physics and Chemistry is the safest base. Biology also works for many B.Sc Geology courses (reported). Pay attention to Geography, rainfall, rivers and soil. Check each university's own B.Sc entry rules. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · 3 yearsB.Sc in Geology (or Applied Geology or Earth Science) at a university. Keep Maths, Physics or Chemistry as supporting subjects. Do field trips, since mapping rocks and reading landscapes is the core skill.
- Step 3 · 2 yearsM.Sc in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology. This degree is the minimum for the CGWB Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology) post. IIT JAM Geology is one way into IIT M.Sc programmes (reported); many universities run their own entrance tests.
- Step 4 · UPSC Prelims (January)Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination, an objective test. For the hydrogeology stream it has Paper I General Studies (100 marks, 2 hours) and Paper II Geology/Hydrogeology (300 marks, 2 hours), with negative marking. In the 2027 cycle the notice came out on 2 Sept 2026, the last date to apply was 22 Sept 2026, and Prelims is on 10 Jan 2027 (UPSC notice 01/2027-GEOL). Age limit is 21–32 on 1 January of the exam year, with relaxations for some categories. The fee is ₹200, and women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay nothing (reported).
- Step 5 · UPSC Main (June)Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination. It has three descriptive (essay-type) papers of 200 marks each, answered in English, at M.Sc level. In the 2027 cycle the dates are 19–20 June 2027. For the hydrogeology stream the papers are Geology I, Geology II and Hydrogeology (reported).
- Step 6 · Interview and allotmentPersonality Test (interview), then document verification and a medical check (reported). Posts are allotted by your rank and your choices between posts, such as Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology) in CGWB or Geologist in GSI.
- Step 7 · Training and probationScientist 'B' joins CGWB's Group A cadre. The Ministry's 2025 draft rules describe a mandatory one-year Induction Level Training Course for successful probation. Probation is reported to be two years (reported). After that, promotions go up through Scientist 'C', 'D' and so on. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Central government (main route)M.Sc in Geology or Hydrogeology, then the UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist exam for Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology) or Assistant Hydrogeologist at the Central Ground Water Board (Ministry of Jal Shakti).
- Rivers, floods and rainfall (surface-water hydrology)The Central Water Commission has hydrology and hydromet cadres, such as Assistant Director (Hydromet). Many of its technical posts go to engineers, so check each notice for the degree asked. A B.Tech in Civil Engineering followed by an M.Tech in Water Resources or Hydrology is a common path.
- Research, state departments and consultingAfter an M.Sc or M.Tech, you can do a PhD and join research institutes or universities. You can also look at state groundwater or irrigation departments, water-supply projects, mining and environmental consulting firms, or NGOs working on watershed work. Each has its own hiring rules, so check each employer's notice.

Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no UPSC exam fee, and upper-age relaxation applies to SC/ST, OBC and PwBD candidates (reported). In the 2027 cycle, a few CGWB hydrogeology posts were reported as reserved for PwBD candidates. Check the notice for which disabilities are eligible for each post, since field work can be physically demanding.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Make a simple rain gauge from a straight-sided bottle or tin. Mark it in millimetres and record the rain every day for a month. Draw a bar chart and compare it with the local weather report.
- Class 10–12Find out where your home or school gets its water from and what happens to rainwater at your school. Then browse India's free water-data portal and look at your state's river or rainfall data.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course on hydrology, groundwater or water resources. Also read your district's groundwater report on the CGWB website to see how real reports are written.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Vacancies are very few. For the 2027 cycle, UPSC advertised about 127 posts across GSI and CGWB. Only around a dozen were for hydrogeology at CGWB (5 Scientist 'B' and 7 Assistant Hydrogeologist) (reported).
- The UPSC Geo-Scientist exam is for GSI and CGWB. It does not recruit for the Central Water Commission. CWC jobs are advertised separately, so read each notice.
- In CGWB, 'hydrogeologist' is the main scientific job. The Ministry's 2025 draft rules show 294 posts in Hydrogeology but only 8 in Hydrology (numbers can change with workload).
- Dates, age limits, vacancies and fees change every year. Always check the latest UPSC notice on upsc.gov.in. Notices have come out in early September in recent years.
