Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles where a business process and a software setting must match.
- Working with people from finance, sales or operations, and seeing your work used every day.
- Steady learning, because SAP products and versions keep changing.
- Long project hours and deadlines, especially near a go-live date.
- Travel or shifting to client sites, sometimes for months, and sometimes abroad.
- Years of learning before you feel confident, plus the pressure to keep certifications current.
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed school stream. A B.Tech or BCA route suits PCM or Computer Science students. A BCom or BBA route suits Commerce students who like accounts and business. Maths and English help in both. SAP does not set a school-subject rule of its own.
- First degree
- Usually a bachelor's degree: B.Tech or BCA (for technical roles), or B.Com, BBA or B.Sc (for functional roles). An MBA with an information systems focus is an optional next step.
- Entrance exams
- No government entrance exam. Most people enter through the degree and then an SAP certification, taken through SAP's own exam system. Some colleges also run SAP modules inside MBA or PG programmes.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Studying how a company runs its finance, sales, purchasing, HR or production work. Then setting up SAP to match those processes, testing it, training staff to use it, and fixing problems after go-live. Consultants also write reports, update documents and work with clients and their own project teams.
A day in the work
A consultant often starts the day with a status call with a client's finance or sales team about an open issue. The next few hours go to configuring a module, changing a process setting, or checking test results. Some time goes to writing notes, updating a training document, or helping a business user with a stuck transaction. Late in the day, the team may join a call with the project manager to plan the next release.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Pick a stream that keeps both doors open. PCM suits the technical route, and Commerce suits the business and finance route. Strong Maths and English help in both.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Take a degree such as B.Tech or BCA for the technical side, or B.Com, BBA or B.Sc for the functional side. Choosing a course with a business or accounts component makes it easier to learn SAP modules like finance or sales.
- Step 3 · During the degreeLearn the basics of SAP and ERP through free self-paced courses on SAP's learning site. Then pick one area to go deeper in, such as finance (FI/CO), sales (SD), materials (MM), HR or ABAP programming. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · After the degreeEarn an SAP certification in your chosen module. SAP sells its certification exam in India through an individual-buyer edition. Many people also join a paid training course first. Check what is included before paying for any course.
- Step 5 · Entry jobStart as a trainee, associate or junior consultant in an IT services firm, a consulting company, or a company that runs SAP in-house. Early work is mostly configuration, testing and support under a senior person. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Years 3 to 8 (typical)Move to consultant, senior consultant, then lead or solution architect. Some people move into project management. Keep learning new versions such as S/4HANA and SAP's cloud products, because the older skills change over time. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Pay varies a lot. A fresher in a support or associate role earns much less than a senior consultant or architect with years of project work. City, employer type and whether you have a niche module also make a big difference.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Watch how a local shop, pharmacy or kirana store tracks stock and bills. Note what information is written down, who uses it, and what goes wrong when it is missing.
- Class 10–12Take Alison's free 'An Introduction to SAP' course. It covers the basics of ERP, finance posting and purchase-to-pay. Finish one module and write a short note on what you learned.Open link ↗
- College or afterComplete Great Learning's free 'Introduction to SAP' course to see how modules fit together. Then check SAP's own free self-paced learning journeys on its learning site before you consider any paid course.Open link ↗
Good to know
- SAP skills are not a legal licence. Your certification and your work record matter more than the name of the training institute.
- Many private institutes sell SAP courses with placement promises. These are not checked by any government body, so read the fee, duration and exam details carefully before you pay.
- Most SAP work for Indian freshers is in IT services and consulting firms. The work often involves travel or long project hours, which can change with each client.
