Solutions Architect
Plans how a company's many software systems fit together to meet business needs.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing how many pieces of technology work together to solve a real business problem
- Explaining hard technical ideas to people who are not technical
- Working on the big picture rather than one small piece of code
- Years of study and work before you reach the senior role
- Pressure when a system fails or a client deadline is close
- Constant change, since cloud tools and best practices keep moving and you must keep learning
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics and Maths is the usual route into a B.Tech. Computer Science or IT in Class 11–12 helps a lot. For MCA, colleges usually want a bachelor's degree with Maths; check each college's rules.
- First degree
- B.Tech or MCA in computer science, IT or a related field. Most people reach this job after several years of work in software, cloud or networks, not straight after the degree.
- Entrance exams
- No single exam is set for this job. Entry to a B.Tech or MCA is through college entrance tests or Class 12 marks. Hiring is by the employer, through interviews and skill tests.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Studying a company's current systems and its business goals, then designing how software, cloud services, databases and networks should work together. Writing architecture diagrams and documents, choosing technologies, and explaining the choices to managers, developers and clients.
A day in the work
Your morning may start with a quick check on how the live systems performed overnight. You then join a meeting with a client or product manager to understand a new need, such as moving an old billing system to the cloud. The afternoon goes to drawing the design, writing the document, and reviewing the plan with developers and security staff. You end the day by answering questions from the team that will build it.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics and Maths, and Computer Science if your school offers it. Learn basic programming in one language, such as Python, and try small projects.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Join a B.Tech or MCA in computer science or IT. Entry is through the college's own process, so check its admission page for the current rules.
- Step 3 · First 3–5 years of workWork as a software developer, tester, cloud engineer or network engineer. This gives you the hands-on experience that architect jobs ask for. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Years 3–6Earn a cloud architect certification from AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. Employers in India often list these, but they are not a legal requirement. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · About 6–10 years inMove into a solutions architect role, often through promotion or a senior hire. Many roles also ask for skills in security, data and project management. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Developer to architectBegin as a programmer, then take on design work for bigger projects. This is the most common path described in career guides.
- Infrastructure or network to architectBegin in system administration or networking, then learn cloud and application design. This suits people who like hardware, servers and how systems connect.

What people earn
Pay depends a lot on experience, the city you work in, and whether you join a product company, a services firm or a bank; the most senior roles pay the most.

Good to know
- No Indian law or official body licenses this job, so anyone can use the title. Trust comes from experience and certificates, not a register.
- Experience asks vary a lot. Some job listings want about five years, others seven to twelve or more.
- Cloud certification exams cost money. Check the provider's official page for the current fee before you plan for one.
