Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing a look come together for a real shoot, film or event
- Working with photographers, directors and other creative people
- Changing your style every few weeks as new projects come in
- Irregular hours, long shoot days and tight deadlines
- Income can be uneven, especially in the first few years, and you have to chase payments
- Assisting for little pay is common before you get your own clients
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 from a recognised board. NIFT's design courses accept any stream; its B.F.Tech course needs Maths. Most stylists come through a design, fashion or media course, so a good Class 12 pass matters more than a specific stream.
- First degree
- There is no fixed degree. The common routes are a 4-year B.Des (fashion design, fashion communication or similar) at NIFT or another design college, or a short styling certificate of about 6 months to a year.
- Entrance exams
- For NIFT: NIFTEE, run by NTA. For B.Des it has a written GAT and CAT, then a practical Situation Test or interview. Other design colleges usually run their own entrance tests. Short certificate courses often have no entrance test.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Planning looks for shoots, films, shows and events. Choosing outfits, accessories, hair and make-up direction. Sourcing clothes from designers and stores, managing fittings and returns, and working with photographers, directors, models and brands. For individual clients, it means building a personal look and wardrobe plan.
A day in the work
A stylist often starts the day by reading the brief from a director, brand or client, and checking the budget and the shot list. Much of the time goes on pulling outfits from stores, designers and the stylist's own wardrobe, then checking fit and colour under the light. On a shoot day, the stylist is on set early, dressing talent, fixing last-minute problems and making quick changes. Afterwards there is sorting, returns, invoices and a few emails to plan the next job.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–10Build the habit of looking closely at clothes, colours and fabrics. Keep a sketch book and a scrapbook of looks you admire. Learn basic drawing, because design colleges test it.
- Step 2 · Class 12Finish Class 12 in any stream. If you want NIFT, register for NIFTEE 2027 (the exam is on 10 January 2027). Registration closes on 16 November 2026 and a late fee applies up to 21 November (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · After Class 12, 4 yearsTake a B.Des at NIFT or another recognised design college, choosing fashion communication or fashion design. Alternatively, take a short styling certificate at a recognised institute, which is shorter but gives less depth.
- Step 4 · During college and afterAssist an experienced stylist on shoots and shows. Build a portfolio of looks you have styled, with photos, mood boards and credits. Most entry-level stylists start as assistants. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · After 1–3 years of workStart on your own or join a studio, magazine, brand or agency. Build a client base, set your fees, and keep your portfolio current. Work is project-based, so income comes in bursts. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Earnings vary a great deal: beginners who assist often earn far less than established stylists with a strong client list, and city, brand names and freelance versus salaried work change the picture a lot.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
NIFT seat rules include reserved categories for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS, and horizontal reservation for persons with disabilities. Candidates with disabilities need to upload a UDID card or disability certificate. Age relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates is reported in secondary coverage.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Each week, sketch three outfits you see in films or on people around you. Note the colours and fabrics used, and why they work.
- Class 10–12Take a free online course, such as Alison's free Diploma in Fashion Design, to learn the basics of fabrics, mood boards and fashion history. Then make a small mood board for one school event.Open link ↗
- College or afterOffer to help a local photographer, theatre group or college fashion show with styling for one month. Use the work to start a small portfolio of 10 looks.
Good to know
- Fashion styling is not a licensed profession. Anyone can call themselves a stylist, so your portfolio and client record count for more than a certificate.
- NIFT's 2026 admission guidelines list 4,014 undergraduate seats across its B.Des and B.F.Tech programmes. Competition for these seats is high.
- The NIFT Mumbai short course in creative fashion styling is a 6-month, evening and weekend course. It is open after Class 12, but it is a paid course, so check its fee page before deciding.
- Most stylists are self-employed. Income depends on client base, city and reputation, and it can be uneven in the early years.
