Fisheries Scientist / Officer
Works on fish breeding, stock health and fisheries management in government and research bodies.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working outdoors, near ponds, rivers, coasts or hatcheries
- Biology applied to real farming and food problems
- Helping farmers and fishing communities directly
- Government posts are few, and exams can take several attempts
- Postings can be remote, and transfers are common
- Field work means heat, rain, smell and early mornings
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 science. ICAR's CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026 bulletin asks for at least three subjects out of Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology or Agriculture, plus English. But each fisheries university sets its own rule. Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu list PCB, and Karnataka's Bidar university lists Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. Check the table for the university you want.
- First degree
- B.F.Sc. (Bachelor of Fisheries Science), 4 years. Most scientist and research posts need an M.F.Sc. (Master of Fisheries Science, 2 years) after that.
- Entrance exams
- For the B.F.Sc. seats ICAR fills through its quota, CUET (ICAR-UG), run by NTA. State fisheries universities fill the rest of their seats by their own entrance or merit rules. For the M.F.Sc.: ICAR's AIEEA PG, held by NTA (the 2026 exam was reported as 4 July). For jobs: state public service commission exams for fisheries officers, and ASRB NET/ARS for ICAR scientist posts.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Breeding fish and prawn seed in hatcheries, checking fish health and water quality, studying wild fish stocks, advising fish farmers, running government schemes, and writing reports and policy.
A day in the work
Morning might begin at a hatchery or pond, checking water, feed and whether the fish seed is healthy. A state officer then visits a village to advise a farmer on stocking and disease. After lunch there is paperwork: data entry, scheme files and reports. A scientist's day is more lab and field sampling, followed by writing results. Expect travel, and some time near water in all weathers.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose the science stream. Biology (PCB) is accepted everywhere. Some universities also take PCM, but others list only PCB. Pick the subjects after checking the fisheries university in your own state or the one you want.
- Step 2 · Class 12Apply for CUET (UG) and choose ICAR for B.F.Sc. seats in the ICAR quota. ICAR's 2026 bulletin says there is no direct admission without a CUET (ICAR-UG) score. For the rest of the seats, apply to your state's fisheries university as per its own rules. Check each university's marks, age and subject conditions.
- Step 3 · 4 yearsB.F.Sc. at an ICAR-recognised college of fisheries. You study aquaculture, fish biology, fish health, processing and fisheries economics, with practicals at hatcheries and farms.
- Step 4 · After B.F.Sc. (job route 1)Apply to your state's public service commission or fisheries department for posts such as Fisheries Development Officer or Fisheries Extension Officer. A B.F.Sc. from an ICAR-recognised university is usually the requirement. Selection is usually a written exam, and often an interview (reported; the details change with each state's notice). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · 2 years (research route)M.F.Sc. through ICAR AIEEA PG. CIFE Mumbai's page asks for a B.F.Sc. with at least 60% marks or OGPA 6.50 out of 10 (55% or 6.00 for SC/ST).
- Step 6 · ASRB NET/ARS: prelims and mainsWith a Master's degree, sit the ASRB combined exam for ICAR scientist posts. The 2025 round was reported to have an objective prelims, then a descriptive mains. Age was 21–32 years for ARS (reported). Check asrb.gov.in for the 2026 notice, because I could not confirm it. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Interview, training and probationA viva-voce interview follows the mains. Selected candidates join as scientists on probation, which was reported as 2 years, and go through a training course (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- State fisheries officerB.F.Sc., then a state public service commission or state recruitment board exam for posts like Fisheries Development Officer or Fisheries Extension Officer. Work is in districts: farmers, ponds, hatcheries and government schemes.
- ICAR or research scientistB.F.Sc., then M.F.Sc. (via ICAR AIEEA PG), then the ASRB NET/ARS exam. Work is at ICAR fisheries institutes, on breeding, nutrition, disease and stock studies. A Ph.D. helps for the senior posts.
- TeachingB.F.Sc., M.F.Sc. and a Ph.D. A NET score from ASRB is a route to becoming a lecturer or assistant professor in fisheries colleges (reported).
Your real chances
Seats are limited at the start. ICAR's 2026 bulletin lists a small number of B.F.Sc. seats per university in the ICAR quota (for example 16 at Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Kochi, and 18 at Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University). Jobs are limited too: in 2025, ASRB advertised about 582 posts across all farm-science subjects (reported), and fisheries is only a small part of that.

What people earn
ICAR scientist (ARS) posts start at Research Level 10 of the 7th CPC, at roughly ₹56,100–57,700 basic plus allowances (reported; I could not open the official 2026 entry-level notice). The official ASRB 2026 notice shows senior posts, such as the director of ICAR-Central Institute for Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, at Research Level 14 (₹1,44,200–₹2,18,200). State fisheries officer pay depends on the state. For example, Bihar's 2026 notice for Fisheries Extension Officer was reported at Pay Level 7 (reported).
Pay starts modest in state jobs and rises with promotions and years of service, and ICAR scientist posts are paid on a higher scale than most state officer posts; allowances change with the posting city.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
ASRB's ARS exam has been reported to give extra years of upper age relaxation to SC/ST (5), OBC (3) and PwBD (10) candidates (reported). CIFE reserves seats for physically handicapped candidates in its M.F.Sc. programme. However, some universities limit admission by the type of disability. For example, Maharashtra's fisheries university bars certain physical disabilities from the B.F.Sc., so check each university's conditions.

- Class 7–9Watch a nearby pond, tank or small aquarium for a month. Note the water colour, the plants, the fish and what changes after rain.
- Class 10–12Open ICAR's CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026 bulletin and read the B.F.Sc. table. Note which Class 12 subjects your state's fisheries university asks for.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead the ICAR-CIFE M.F.Sc. eligibility page and set a target for your B.F.Sc. marks. Also look for your state fisheries department's latest recruitment notice to see what it asks for.Open link ↗
Good to know
- A B.F.Sc. from an ICAR-recognised university is what state recruitment notices usually ask for, so check recognition before you take admission (reported).
- Vacancies are few and are spread across states and years. ASRB advertised about 582 posts in 2025 across all farm-science subjects (reported), and fisheries gets only a small share. Plan for more than one path.
- Some senior posts at bodies like the Fishery Survey of India are filled by deputation of experienced people, so they are not entry-level (reported).
- Interested in fish but not in government work? Look at hatchery, feed and aquaculture farming, and at marine biology.
