Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Being outdoors near the sea, estuaries and mangroves, and working with living things
  • Solving puzzles from patient observation, lab work and data
  • Knowing that your work helps protect reefs, fisheries and coastal communities
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Many years of study: usually an M.Sc, and often a PhD, before a stable job
  • Few permanent posts; many jobs are short project contracts and may mean moving cities
  • Field work can mean heat, rough seas, seasickness, long days and time away from home
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 science with Biology (PCB) is the usual way into a life-science B.Sc. Most colleges ask for around 50% overall (reported; it varies by college). Some M.Sc Marine Science courses also accept graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Computer Science, so students from other science streams are not shut out later.
First degree
B.Sc in a life science such as Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Fisheries or Marine Biology (3 years). Then M.Sc in Marine Biology or Marine Science (2 years). Research and scientist jobs usually need a PhD as well.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam. B.Sc and M.Sc admission depends on each university (marks, entrance test or interview). CSIR-UGC NET (run by NTA) is the main route to a research fellowship (JRF) and PhD. Marine Biotechnology M.Sc seats at some universities go through DBT's GAT-B test.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Studying fish, plankton, corals, seagrass, mangroves and other sea life; field surveys on beaches, reefs and research ships; lab work and DNA studies; counting and identifying species; writing reports and papers; advising on marine protected areas and fishing.

A day in the work
A morning might start at a landing centre or a rocky shore, collecting water samples or counting species at low tide. By afternoon you are back in the lab, looking at plankton under a microscope or running DNA tests. The evening is for entering data, checking numbers and writing the report. On research-ship cruises, which last days or weeks, you work in shifts and sleep little, but most days are spent on land.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose science with Biology. Chemistry is useful too. Spend time outdoors and get used to observing: a pond, a beach, a mangrove, a fish market. Marine biology is mostly patient observation and careful notes.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 science with Biology and decent marks. Few Indian colleges offer a B.Sc in Marine Biology itself, so a B.Sc in Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology or Fisheries is the usual start. Check each university's own admission page for entrance tests and cut-offs. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 3 yearsB.Sc in a life science. Pay attention to Zoology and Botany, and add Chemistry and statistics if you can. Berhampur University, for example, lists Botany and Zoology (or Chemistry and some other subjects) as qualifying B.Sc subjects for its M.Sc Marine Biology. Goa University admits graduates from many science subjects.
  4. Step 4 · 2 yearsM.Sc in Marine Biology or Marine Science. Annamalai University's Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology (Parangipettai), Goa University and Berhampur University are three government options that run these courses. Seats are few. Goa University lists an intake of 20 per batch for its M.Sc in Marine Sciences.
  5. Step 5 · After M.ScAppear for CSIR-UGC NET in Life Sciences or in Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. The June 2026 exam was held on 17–18 July 2026, and applications for December 2026 are listed on the NTA site. You generally need 55% in your Master's (50% for reserved categories and PwD). The age limit for JRF is about 30 years, with relaxations. There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission only (reported; read the current bulletin). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · PhD, about 3–5 yearsPhD in marine biology, ecology or marine biotechnology at a university or national institute. Berhampur University, for example, asks for 55% at M.Sc (50% for SC/ST and physically challenged candidates) to sit its research eligibility test. Most senior scientist posts expect a PhD.
  7. Step 7 · JobsGovernment research bodies under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, such as CMLRE in Kochi, mostly hire for fixed-term project posts. Its 2021 notice, for example, listed Project Scientist-I with an M.Sc (60%) and an age limit of 35. Regular 'Scientist B' posts are advertised now and then by central ministries. Other options are university teaching, NGOs and conservation work.

Ways in

  • Standard routeClass 12 PCB → B.Sc life science → M.Sc Marine Biology/Marine Science → NET/PhD.
  • From another science degreeSome M.Sc Marine Science courses (for example Goa University) take graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Computer Science, Geology and more. This suits students who left Biology after Class 10 but still love the sea. Check each course's eligibility, since the marine biology specialisation may need life-science subjects.
  • Marine BiotechnologyM.Sc Marine Biotechnology at some universities (for example Goa University and Berhampur University) is admitted through DBT's GAT-B test. It leads towards molecular and DNA-based work on sea life.

Your real chances

No one publishes a single count of marine-biologist jobs versus applicants, so no marine-specific number is available. For scale: NTA reported that over 1.5 lakh candidates appeared in the Joint CSIR-UGC NET in June 2026, across five science subjects (not only marine). Postgraduate seats in marine science are also few. Goa University lists an intake of 20 for its M.Sc in Marine Sciences.

What people earn

Official pay

Regular 'Scientist B' posts in central government are at Pay Level 10, ₹56,100–1,77,500 (7th CPC), plus allowances. The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change's 2025 advertisement lists posts at this level that accept a Master's in Marine Biology, with an age limit of 35 for Scientist B/C. Most marine-biology jobs you will see first are fixed-term project posts, which pay a set monthly amount instead of a pay level. CMLRE's 2021 notice, for example, listed ₹56,000 + HRA for Project Scientist-I. Pay levels and amounts can change with later pay commissions.

Earnings vary a lot: students on fellowships and project posts earn modestly, while permanent government scientists and senior university staff earn more, and pay depends on the employer, the city and how many years you have put in.

Myth and fact

Myth: Marine biologists spend most of their time diving and swimming with dolphins.
Fact: Most of the work is lab analysis, counting and identifying small organisms, data and report writing. Diving is a small part of the job, and many marine biologists work mainly on plankton, mud, fish or DNA, not big animals.

For girls and students with disabilities

For the CSIR-UGC NET JRF, candidates in reserved categories, women and PwD candidates get age relaxation (up to 5 years) and a lower minimum-marks requirement of 50% (reported; check the current bulletin). Berhampur University's PhD entry test also asks for 50% instead of 55% from SC/ST and physically challenged candidates. Boat and diving field work can be physically demanding, but lab, data and policy roles are open to many students with disabilities.

Good to know

  • Jobs are few. Many research posts are fixed-term project jobs that depend on funding, and permanent scientist posts are rare. Think of this as a long-haul career.
  • Marine biology is a branch of life science. If a particular college does not offer a B.Sc in Marine Biology, do not worry: a B.Sc in Zoology or Botany followed by an M.Sc in Marine Biology is the common path.
  • Many marine biologists work with microscopes, DNA machines and computers, not boats. Learning basic statistics and coding (R or Python) helps a lot.
  • Always check current eligibility, age limits and dates in the official NTA or recruiting-body notice. They change every year.
