Builds both the visible side and the server side of websites and web applications.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Building something real that people can open and use
- Solving puzzles and fixing bugs step by step
- Learning new tools, and seeing the result straight away
- Long hours at a screen, and deadlines that can mean late evenings
- Tools change often, so you must keep learning for years
- Entry-level hiring is competitive, and AI tools are changing what freshers are expected to do
- Class 11–12 subjects
- There is no fixed subject rule, because this is a skill-based job and not a licensed profession. For a B.Tech or BE in Computer Science or IT, you need Class 12 with Physics and Maths (PCM). BCA rules depend on the university. Many accept any stream, and some ask for Maths or Computer Science. Check the admission page of each college. If you choose self-learning, you can start in Class 9 or 10 with any subjects.
- First degree
- BCA (3 years; 4 years with honours under NEP in some universities) or B.Tech/BE in Computer Science or IT (4 years). A degree is common but not legally required. Many people also start with self-learning plus a portfolio of web projects.
- Entrance exams
- No exam is needed to become a web developer. For a B.Tech, you usually write JEE Main or a state entrance test. For a BCA, admission may be on Class 12 marks, CUET (central universities) or the university's own test. It varies by college.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Building the pages you see in a browser (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), the server code behind them, and the database that stores the data. You also connect the two, test the product, fix bugs, and put it online. You work with designers, testers and product managers.
A day in the work
You begin with a short team meeting to share what you finished yesterday and what is stuck. Then you pick a task, for example adding a 'Pay now' button to a shopping site. You write the page code, then the server code that checks the order, then the database change that saves it. After lunch you test it, fix a bug a tester found, and ask a teammate to review your code. Before you log off, you push your work so the team can see it.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–10Get comfortable with a computer and try small things. Make a simple web page about yourself using HTML and CSS. Learn basic logic and Maths. You do not need a stream decision yet.
- Step 2 · Class 11–12Pick a stream that keeps your options open. PCM keeps B.Tech open. Any stream can lead to BCA or self-learning. Computer Science or Informatics Practices, if your school offers it, gives a head start. Learn JavaScript and build 2–3 small projects.
- Step 3 · After Class 12Choose a route: BCA (3 years), B.Tech/BE in CSE or IT (4 years), or self-learning with online courses. A degree helps with campus placements at large companies (reported). For BCA, check that the college is approved by its university. AICTE has also brought BCA/BBA/BMS in general colleges under its approval process from 2024-25.
- Step 4 · During study or self-learningLearn the full set: front end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript and a framework such as React), back end (for example Node.js, Python or Java), databases (SQL), and putting a site online. Build 3–5 complete projects and keep the code public, for example on GitHub. A national short-term qualification for this job role exists under NCVET (NSQF Level 4.5), but employers do not require it.
- Step 5 · Last year or afterApply for internships and fresher roles at IT services companies, product companies, startups and agencies. Interviews usually test coding, basic problem-solving and your projects (reported). Freelancing is another way to start. (reported — check with the official body)
- OngoingKeep learning. Tools and frameworks change every few years. Many developers later move into senior developer, architect, or team lead roles, or into related paths such as cloud or product work.
Ways in
- BCA routeWho: Students from any stream who want a computer degree without JEE BCA for 3 years (4 with honours), building web projects alongside the syllabus, then internships and fresher jobs. An MCA can follow.
- B.Tech / BE routeWho: Students with PCM who are comfortable with Maths and want the widest campus recruitment B.Tech in CSE or IT for 4 years after a JEE Main or state entrance test. Choose web and software electives and do internships.
- Self-learning plus portfolioWho: Disciplined learners, or those who cannot afford or do not want a full degree right away Free courses (SWAYAM, NPTEL, Skill India Digital Hub, MDN) plus real projects, then freelancing or fresher jobs. It is possible, but the hiring filters at big firms are harder without a degree (reported).
Your real chances
NASSCOM estimates that India's tech industry added about 1.35 lakh net jobs in FY26 (headcount up about 2.3%, to nearly 59.5 lakh). That is positive but slow growth, so entry-level jobs are competitive. Skills and projects matter. These figures are for the whole tech sector, not only web developers.

What people earn
Pay usually starts modest for freshers and grows quickly with skill and proof of work. It varies a lot with the employer type (IT services firm, product company, startup or freelancing), the city, and how strong your projects are.

- College or afterBuild one small full-stack project, such as a to-do list with login and a database, and put the code online. Take a free NPTEL course on web or app development to fill gaps.Open link ↗
Good to know
- No law or council licenses web developers. Your projects and skills are your proof.
- Official national job-role standards exist. The IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council has a 'Web Developer' qualification pack (SSC/Q0503, NSQF Level 4, minimum job entry age 16). There is also an NCVET 'Full-Stack Developer' qualification file. These are optional.
- Be careful with expensive 'guaranteed placement' courses. Free official courses cover the basics. Check any private college's approval before paying.
- If you like the look and feel of websites more than the server code, also explore UI/UX design. If you prefer data and logic, look at software development or data engineering.
