Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Spotting small problems that others miss, and feeling good when a bug is caught before users see it.
  • Working as part of a team with developers, designers and product people.
  • Learning new tools and a steady path toward automation or coding.
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Repeating similar test cases for many days can feel boring.
  • Deadlines before a release can mean long hours or late-night calls.
  • Testers often get blamed when a bug reaches users, even when the fault was not theirs.
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream, with Maths helpful for BCA and B.Tech. B.Sc IT or Computer Science also works. B.Tech in Computer Science or IT needs PCM. Colleges set their own minimum marks, so check each college's rules.
First degree
BCA (3 years), B.Sc IT or B.Sc Computer Science (3 years), or B.Tech in Computer Science or IT (4 years). Many testers also join with any graduate degree plus a testing certificate.
Entrance exams
No single entrance exam is needed for this job. Some BCA and B.Sc admissions are by university test or merit, and some B.Tech colleges use JEE Main or state tests. The main certificate is ISTQB, a global testing certificate run in India by the Indian Testing Board.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Reading requirements, writing test cases, running the software by hand, logging bugs with clear steps, and retesting fixes. Later, writing automated test scripts with tools such as Selenium. Working with developers, product managers and clients to decide if a product is ready to release.

A day in the work
A tester starts the day by checking the bug list and the build from the night before. They then run planned test cases on a new feature and note any problems with screenshots and clear steps. In the afternoon they join a stand-up call with developers, and may spend the rest of the day retesting fixes or updating automation scripts.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Build strong Maths and English. Learn basic computer use and logic. Try a small programming language such as Python in your free time.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Pick a degree: BCA, B.Sc IT or Computer Science, or B.Tech in CSE or IT. Check each college's eligibility and admission test on its own website. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Degree yearsLearn programming, databases and SQL. Build one small project and write test cases for it. Look for an internship in a software or testing company.
  4. Step 4 · Degree or afterTake the ISTQB Foundation Level certificate. It is the common starting certificate for testers. Exam fees are paid separately and are not free. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · First jobStart as a manual or functional tester. Over 1–3 years, learn automation tools and move toward an automation tester role.
  6. Optional · LaterGovernment-run STQC courses such as Certified Software Test Manager, which are for people with some work experience, or an ISTQB Advanced level.

What people earn

Pay depends on experience, skills and city, and changes a lot from a fresher's first job to a senior automation role. Testers who can write automation code usually earn more than those who test only by hand.

Myth and fact

Myth: Testers just click around and are not real engineers.
Fact: Good testers design test plans, write automation code and understand how the system works. The role needs careful thinking and technical skill.

  • Class 10–12Look at the free NPTEL course list and pick a short course on software engineering or testing, if one is running.Open link ↗
  • College or afterDownload the free ISTQB Foundation syllabus and read the first chapter. Use it to test a simple app you already use.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • ISTQB is not a legal licence. Employers value it, but a strong project, internship or test-automation skill often counts for more.
  • Testing is a common first job in IT. Many testers later move to automation, development, business analysis or product roles.
  • Course fees, exam fees and degree fees vary a lot between colleges. Check each college's official fee page before you decide.
  • Course content and exam fees can change. Check the Indian Testing Board site (istqb.in) and your college before you pay.
