Gas Pipeline Operations Engineer (GAIL)
Manages natural gas pipelines, compressor stations and processing plants across the country.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Hands-on engineering: machines, instruments, valves and real plants.
- Safety-critical work where careful routines matter.
- A stable government-company career with training and a clear grade structure.
- Postings can be anywhere in India, often at plants or pipeline sites away from big cities.
- Plant and control-room work can involve shifts, site walks and emergency call-outs.
- Entry depends on a high GATE score in one exam year, plus 65% in your degree.
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM), so you can get into a B.E./B.Tech programme. Keep your degree marks high: GAIL's 2026 advertisement asked for at least 65% in the engineering degree (60% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates, on posts reserved for them).
- First degree
- B.E./B.Tech, 4 years, in Chemical (or Petrochemical), Instrumentation (or Electronics/Instrumentation), Mechanical (or Production/Industrial) or Electrical. GAIL's 2026 advertisement listed these four disciplines.
- Entrance exams
- GATE in the matching paper (CH, IN, ME or EE), then a Group Discussion and/or Interview by GAIL. GAIL ran no separate written test in 2026 (reported).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Keeping gas flowing safely through long pipelines. Running and maintaining compressor stations, gas processing and petrochemical plants. Control-room monitoring, instruments and safety systems, maintenance planning, and emergency response.
A day in the work
You might start at a compressor station or control room, checking pressure and flow readings and the overnight log. Then you walk the plant with the technicians to look at a machine that is vibrating more than usual. You plan the maintenance shutdown with the team and fill in safety permits. Some days go to meetings, some to reports, and now and then to an emergency drill or a real alarm.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Fluid flow, pressure, heat and chemical reactions are the core ideas behind gas pipelines and plants.
- Step 2 · After Class 12 · 4 yearsEnter a B.E./B.Tech through JEE Main or your state entrance exam. Choose Chemical, Instrumentation, Mechanical or Electrical. Aim for 65% or more overall, because GAIL's 2026 advertisement set that as the minimum.
- Step 3 · 3rd–4th year of B.Tech · FebruaryTake GATE in your branch paper. GATE 2027 is scheduled for 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027 (reported). GAIL accepts only that year's GATE score, not older ones. GAIL's 2026 advertisement said so for GATE-2026, and its 2027 notice repeats it (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Feb–March of the final yearApply separately on GAIL's website with your GATE registration number. In 2026 the window ran 20 February to 18 March (reported). For 2027 it is announced as 17 February to 18 March 2027 (reported). The upper age limit in the 2026 advertisement was 26 years on 18 March 2026, with relaxation for reserved categories. Only fresh graduates of the last year, or final-year students, could apply. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · A few months laterGAIL shortlists on GATE marks, then calls candidates for a Group Discussion and/or Personal Interview (reported). Carry your original mark sheets, GATE scorecard and any category certificate. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Year 1 · Training-cum-probationJoin as Executive Trainee in E-2 grade. The 2026 advertisement says the one-year training-cum-probation is at a basic pay of ₹60,000. After it you are absorbed in the same E-2 pay scale. Postings can be anywhere in India, based on GAIL's needs.
- LaterGrow through operations and maintenance roles. Move to control rooms, projects, safety or planning, depending on your branch and GAIL's openings.
Your real chances
For the 2026 cycle (GATE-2026), job sites reported 70 Executive Trainee posts across Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical and Mechanical (reported). The advertisement gives category-wise tables for these four disciplines. GAIL has not published an applicant count that we could find, so we cannot give a seats-to-applicants ratio. The 2027 notice announced no vacancy number yet; it is expected with the detailed advertisement in February 2027 (reported).

What people earn
E-2 grade, pay scale ₹60,000–1,80,000. Basic pay is ₹60,000 during the one-year training-cum-probation, plus Variable Dearness Allowance, perks under the cafeteria approach, and performance-related pay (GAIL advertisement, 2026).
Pay starts at a fixed entry level and grows with promotions and performance-related pay; allowances and housing vary with the posting city, so remote plant sites and metro offices feel different.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
GAIL's advertisement gives a 5% relaxation in minimum degree marks to SC, ST and PwBD candidates, but only on posts reserved for them. Age relaxation for PwBD candidates applies whether the post is reserved or not, provided the post is marked suitable for that disability. Each discipline lists the disability categories it is suitable for, so read that table in the advertisement. We found no separate women-specific relaxation in GAIL's advertisement.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Build a simple water-flow model at home with a bottle, a clear tube and a clip. Raise and lower the bottle and see how height changes the flow. Write down what you notice about pressure.
- Class 10–12Browse free NPTEL video courses and watch the first two lectures of an introductory fluid mechanics or chemical engineering course. Note down any word you do not know.Open link ↗
- College or afterPick your GATE paper (CH, IN, ME or EE), download last year's question paper from the official GATE website, and attempt 10 questions. Also look for a summer or vocational training slot at an oil and gas PSU.
Good to know
- "Gas Pipeline Operations Engineer" is a description of the work, not an official GAIL job title. GAIL hires Executive Trainees by discipline. Your first posting could be a pipeline, a compressor station, a gas processing plant or an office, depending on GAIL's needs.
- GAIL also hires in other ways from time to time, such as experienced officers and non-executive staff. Check the Careers page on gailonline.com for current notices; we did not research those routes here.
- Branch matters. In 2026, GAIL advertised Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical and Mechanical posts. Civil, Computer Science and other branches were not in that list.
- Do not skip a year after your degree. In 2026, GAIL accepted only 2025 pass-outs and 2025–26 final-year students. Check the exact batch rule in each year's advertisement.
