Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Turning rough ideas into characters and worlds that players see
  • Working in a team with designers, animators and programmers
  • Seeing your asset running in a finished game
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Frequent revisions and tight deadlines set by leads and publishers
  • Hiring depends on your portfolio, so you must keep building work even after a course
  • Crunch periods with long hours before a game release
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream is the usual entry for design courses, so you do not need PCM or PCB. Drawing, colour sense and comfort with a computer help a lot. Check each college's own rule.
First degree
A 4-year B.Des in Animation Film Design (NID and some other design schools), or a diploma or degree in Game Art or Animation from a private institute. Length and cost vary.
Entrance exams
NID DAT for NID campuses. Most other design and animation colleges use their own test, a portfolio review, or both.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Drawing and designing game characters, weapons, vehicles, buildings, landscapes and props. Making 2D images or 3D models, adding textures and lighting, and checking how they look in the game engine. Working with game designers, animators and programmers, and revising work after feedback.

A day in the work
A game artist often starts with a team check-in on what is due that week. Much of the day goes into drawing concepts, building a 3D model, or fixing textures so an asset looks right in the game. They may import a model into the engine, test how light falls on it, and then revise it after feedback from the art lead or designer. The day usually ends with saving files and noting what needs changing next.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Build a habit of drawing from life and from imagination. Learn basic image editing and one 2D or 3D tool. Keep a sketchbook; your early work becomes your portfolio.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Finish Class 12 in any stream. For NID, apply through the NID DAT route; NID's 2026-27 handbook also states that a Class 12 result must be passed in the first attempt for admission.
  3. Step 3 · 3–4 yearsStudy a B.Des in Animation Film Design or a game-art degree, or a 1–2 year diploma in game art or 3D animation at a private institute. Learn a game engine such as Unity or Unreal alongside drawing. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · During studyBuild a focused portfolio of game assets: a character, an environment scene, a prop, and a short animation. Studios hire on what you can show more than on the degree name.
  5. Step 5 · After studyApply for junior roles such as 2D game artist, 3D environment artist, or character artist at studios, including mobile game studios. Internships often lead to a first job. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Optional · LaterSpecialise further. Options include a master's such as M.Des in Digital Game Design at NID or a similar course, or moving into technical art or art direction with experience. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • NID B.Des (Animation Film Design)A 4-year full-time design degree entered through the NID entrance route. Strong portfolio and design thinking are expected.
  • Private animation or game-art degree or diplomaShorter or more practical courses with their own entrance test or portfolio review. Quality and fees vary a lot, so check outcomes and visit if you can.
  • Skill certificateShorter courses aligned to national skill standards for the Animator job role. Useful for building skills, but a strong portfolio still matters most.

What people earn

Entry-level game artists usually earn much less than experienced artists, and pay is higher in big studio hubs than in smaller cities or contract work.

Myth and fact

Myth: A game artist must be a strong programmer.
Fact: Most game artists work with drawing, sculpting and 2D or 3D art tools. Some technical artists script, but coding is not the core skill for this job.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Draw one character or one room a week in a sketchbook. Add a few colours and label what each part is for.
  • Class 10–12Take the free NPTEL course Introduction to Graphic Design (about 8 weeks) and do one small design project from it. Certificate is optional and paid.Open link ↗
  • College or afterDownload the free 3D tool Blender and model one simple game prop, such as a crate or a lamp. Save it in a small portfolio folder.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • NID's 2026-27 handbook says general-category Indian candidates must be born on or after 1 July 2005 for B.Des. Check the rules for the year you apply.
  • Studios usually judge a game artist by the portfolio. A degree helps, but work you can show matters more.
  • Fees, entrance dates and seat numbers change every year. Confirm them on the college's own site before you plan.
