GIS & Remote Sensing Specialist
Analyses satellite images and maps for farming, cities, water, forests and disaster planning.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing maps and satellite images turn into answers for real problems
- A mix of computer work, data and fieldwork
- Work that links science to farming, water, forests and cities
- Several years of study, often including a master's, before the best jobs
- Contract or project-based posts can mean job uncertainty and frequent moves
- Long hours on deadlines, and repetitive data cleaning in many projects
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in Science with Maths is the safest route, because most degrees in this field need it. Physics, Chemistry or Geography also help. Engineering branches (Civil, Geoinformatics, Computer Science) and science degrees (Geography, Geology, Physics, Agriculture) all lead here.
- First degree
- Either a B.E./B.Tech (Civil, Geoinformatics or Computer Science are common), or a B.Sc in Geography, Geology, Physics, Mathematics or Agriculture. Then a master's in Remote Sensing and GIS, or a one-year PG diploma.
- Entrance exams
- No single national exam for this career. IIRS (ISRO's institute at Dehradun) mostly admits students through its own entrance test or online interview, plus academic records. Some university M.Tech courses use GATE.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Collecting and checking satellite images; building digital maps and databases; analysing crop health, water, forest cover, land use and flood or landslide risk; writing short reports and maps for planners, farmers' bodies and government departments.
A day in the work
A GIS specialist often starts with a clear question, such as which villages are at flood risk after heavy rain. They download satellite images, clean and join map data in GIS software, and check the results against field photos or ground survey points. Much of the day is at a desk, but some weeks include site visits with survey teams. The results go to planners or engineers as maps and a short written note.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Build strong Maths and Science. Learn to read maps, coordinates and scale. Geography is a useful subject to keep.
- Step 2 · Class 11–12Choose Science with Maths (PCM) if you may go into engineering. Choose Science or Geography with Maths if you plan a B.Sc. Learn basic computer skills early, since GIS work is software-based.
- Step 3 · 3–4 yearsTake a B.Sc or B.E./B.Tech in a related field such as Geography, Geology, Civil, Geoinformatics, Agriculture or Computer Science. Use free GIS software like QGIS in your projects.
- Step 4 · 1–2 yearsDo an M.Tech or M.Sc in Remote Sensing and GIS, or a PG diploma. IIRS courses have set eligibility by discipline and usually use an entrance test and interview. Check the current course calendar before you plan. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · After the master'sBuild a portfolio of maps and analyses from your project work. Apply for jobs in private GIS firms, consultancies, state remote sensing centres, or temporary research posts at ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
- OptionalA PhD or research career at a university, ISRO centre or research institute, if you enjoy research more than project delivery.
Ways in
- RouteB.E./B.Tech, then M.Tech in Remote Sensing and GIS (IIRS or a university)
- RouteB.Sc in Geography, Geology or Agriculture, then M.Sc or a one-year PG diploma at IIRS

What people earn
Earnings vary a lot with qualification, employer and city. Entry-level pay is modest, and it rises with a master's, project experience and a move into senior analysis or management roles.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
I could not find girl-only or disability-specific seats in the IIRS notices I checked. IIRS gives preference to government-nominated candidates, who skip its written entrance test.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Open Google Earth on your phone or laptop and find your school and your home. Compare an old and a new image of the same area and note what has changed.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Install the free QGIS software and make a simple map of your district or state with population or rainfall data from a free public source. Show it to a teacher or a science club.
- College or afterTake a free course on remote sensing or GIS from NPTEL, and look at the free online and e-learning courses listed by IIRS.Open link ↗
Good to know
- IIRS has listed its M.Tech admission process as on hold in a 2024 notice. Check the IIRS announcements page for the current status before you plan around it.
- Many IIRS seats are for Indian nationals only. Government-nominated candidates get preference and may skip the written entrance test.
- Jobs at NRSC are often temporary, project-based posts. Read each advertisement's post code and eligibility carefully, because they differ a lot.
- A bachelor's degree alone can get you data-processing or survey roles. Research and senior GIS roles usually need a master's and project experience.
