Measures and maps land and sites for construction, property and government projects.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working outdoors and moving around
- Seeing a plan turn into a real boundary, road or building
- Careful, precise work where small errors matter
- Working in heat, rain, dust and uneven ground
- Disputes with neighbours or landowners over boundaries
- Income can be uneven, especially in the early years of private work
- Class 11–12 subjects
- After Class 10, the ITI Surveyor course asks for a pass with Science and Maths. A civil diploma also starts after Class 10 and needs Maths. Your Class 11–12 stream does not decide this route.
- First degree
- No university degree is needed for the usual route. An ITI Surveyor course takes 2 years. A civil engineering diploma takes about 3 years (reported).
- Entrance exams
- No single national entrance exam. ITI admission is usually by merit or the state's own process. Government surveyor posts use written recruitment exams, set by the state or the employer.
- Licence or registration
- No single national licence for land surveyors that I could confirm. Private practice and boundary work may need state rules, which differ from state to state. Check your state's rules before you practise. Insurance surveyors, who assess claims, are a different job and are licensed by IRDAI.
What the work is like
Measuring land boundaries, levels and distances with total stations, GPS and levelling tools. Preparing maps and plans for houses, roads, property deeds and government records. Working in the field in all weather, then drawing up data on computer.
A day in the work
A surveyor usually starts early and heads to a site with a team, a total station and a tripod. They mark boundary points, take levels and record measurements in a field book or on a tablet. Back at the office, they feed the data into software, draw the plan and check it against old records before handing it over to an engineer or a client.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Take Maths and Science seriously. Practise neat drawing and measurement, since both matter in this work.
- Step 2 · After Class 10Join a two-year NCVT ITI Surveyor course, or a three-year civil engineering diploma (reported). In the ITI you learn total station, levelling, theodolite and plotting.
- Step 3 · During and after trainingGet field experience with a working surveyor, a survey firm or a government survey office. Learning GIS software and GPS work makes you more employable.
- Step 4 · Government route (optional)Surveyor posts in state land records departments and the Survey of India are filled through written exams and selection. Eligibility often asks for an ITI in Surveyor or a civil diploma. Confirm each notice on the official site (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Private practice (optional)Find out what your state requires before you work on your own. Rules for licensing land surveyors vary by state and I could not confirm a single national rule (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- ITI Surveyor (NCVT)Two years after Class 10. Good for field jobs, contract work and starting your own small practice.
- Civil engineering diplomaAbout three years after Class 10 (reported). Opens more office, design and government technical posts.

What people earn
Earnings vary widely. Beginners and contract workers usually earn the least. Experienced surveyors with their own instruments, a licence or a senior government post tend to earn more, and work in big cities usually pays better than in small towns.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Use a paper map of your town and walk one route, measuring the distance with paces or a string. Then check it on a digital map.
- Class 10–12Explore free NPTEL courses on surveying or geomatics, and watch a few short videos on how total stations work.Open link ↗
- College or afterLearn free mapping software such as QGIS with a small project. Map your college or village area and show the result to a teacher.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The ITI Surveyor trade is a two-year NCVT course, so look for an NCVT-affiliated institute before you join.
- Survey of India has a Surveyor post under its own recruitment rules. Its draft rules show a pay level, but the rules are still being amended (see the sources).
- Land surveying and insurance surveying are different jobs. Insurance surveyors assess claims and need an IRDAI licence.
