Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Careful, hands-on lab work with clear right and wrong results
  • Knowing your test result decides whether a batch is safe to use
  • A stable job with a fixed pay scale, benefits and a training period
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Very few posts and tough competition, with long gaps between notices
  • Postings can be in refineries or plants far from big cities, and transfers happen
  • Repetitive work and strict record-keeping, sometimes in shifts, with chemical and safety rules to follow
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Chemistry, along with Physics and Maths (PCM) or Physics and Biology (PCB). Then a B.Sc with Chemistry as the main subject. Maths is not compulsory for most posts, but you will need it for the aptitude section of the online tests.
First degree
B.Sc Chemistry (3 years), then a full-time M.Sc Chemistry (2 years). Officer-level posts usually ask for the M.Sc. A few junior lab posts accept a B.Sc.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam. Each PSU runs its own online test, such as IndianOil's Computer Based Test (CBT) or NTPC's Online Selection Test. Some PSUs have also used GATE scores in past years (reported). Read each year's notice.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Testing crude oil, fuels, water, coal, chemicals and other materials in the lab. Checking them against fixed standards. Keeping accurate records. Running and calibrating instruments. Flagging problems early so a plant does not produce bad or unsafe product.

A day in the work
You reach the plant lab in the morning and check which samples have come in overnight, such as crude, diesel, boiler water or coal. You run the tests, compare results with the standard limits, and write everything in the log. If a result looks wrong, you repeat it, then tell the shift or plant team. In the afternoon you might calibrate an instrument, check stock of chemicals, or help with an audit.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Chemistry with Physics and Maths or Biology. Pay attention in practicals. Titration, salt analysis and careful measuring are what the job is made of.
  2. Step 2 · 3 yearsB.Sc with Chemistry as your main subject, from a recognised university. Marks matter. Officer-level PSU posts usually ask for about 60% in the M.Sc (50–55% or pass marks for reserved categories). Check each notice.
  3. Step 3 · 2 yearsFull-time, regular M.Sc Chemistry. IndianOil's 2026 notice for Quality Control Officers asks for a full-time regular degree from an AICTE/UGC-recognised institution. Get into the lab as much as you can, through projects or internships.
  4. Step 4 · Application and online testApply when a PSU notifies posts. This is usually once a year, and the window is only about 2–3 weeks. IndianOil's 2026 CBT had an aptitude section (maths, reasoning, English) and a 50-question chemistry section. NTPC's 2026 trainee test is reported to have two parts, and you must pass each one separately.
  5. Step 5 · Group task, interview, documents and medicalIndianOil's 2026 weights were CBT 85%, group discussion and group task 5%, and personal interview 10%. NTPC's 2026 stages are reported as online test, document verification and medical. Some officer posts ask for about 2 years of lab or quality-control experience after the M.Sc (reported). Check this before you plan. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Training, probation and bondSelected candidates join as trainees or officers on probation, and training is paid. IndianOil asks for a 3-year service bond: ₹2 lakh for General and ₹35,000 for reserved categories in Grade A0. NTPC's trainee bond is reported at ₹2.5 lakh (₹1.25 lakh for SC/ST/PwBD). (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • After M.Sc: officer or trainee gradeApply to IndianOil's Assistant Quality Control Officer (Grade A0) or NTPC's Assistant Chemist Trainee (ACT). IndianOil's 2026 drive had 9 posts. NTPC's 2026 notice is reported at 40 posts, with M.Sc at 60% and a maximum age of 27 (reported).
  • After B.Sc: junior lab analystIndianOil's refineries hired Junior Quality Control Analysts (non-executive) in the 2025–26 drive. The reported requirement was a B.Sc in Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Industrial Chemistry, with 50% marks, a written test and a skill test (reported). The pay and career ladder are lower than officer grade, but you can start earlier.

Your real chances

In 2026, IndianOil's executive drive had only 9 posts for Quality Control (Chemistry), Grade A0: 6 unreserved, 1 SC and 2 ST. I could not find an official count of applicants. NTPC's 2026 Assistant Chemist Trainee drive is reported at 40 posts. Expect stiff competition for a handful of seats.

What people earn

Official pay

IndianOil Grade A0 (Assistant Quality Control Officer), 2026 notice: basic ₹40,000, scale ₹40,000–1,40,000, plus allowances and performance pay. IndianOil quotes about ₹14.8 lakh a year in total. NTPC's Assistant Chemist Trainee scale is reported as ₹30,000–1,20,000 (E0 grade).

Starting pay is good by lab-job standards and rises with grade and years of service. It depends on the employer, whether you are in a trainee or officer grade, and how much of the pay is allowances and performance pay.

Myth and fact

Myth: Any science graduate can walk into a PSU chemist job after B.Sc.
Fact: Officer-level chemist posts usually need a full-time M.Sc in Chemistry with good marks. IndianOil's 2026 officer post also reportedly asked for about 2 years of experience. B.Sc posts exist, but they are junior lab roles.

For girls and students with disabilities

Posts are reserved for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates, with PwBD quotas where a notice identifies them. IndianOil's 2026 notice gives extra test time to eligible candidates and a lower bond for reserved categories. NTPC's 2026 notice is reported to have age relaxation for reserved groups and no application fee for women. Check each notice for the exact rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make a pH indicator at home with red cabbage or turmeric. Test 8 household liquids, such as lemon juice, soap water and curd water. Write down your colour results and sort them from acidic to basic.
  • Class 10–12Look up the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad programme and read last year's questions. Try the ones you can solve and note the topics you need to revise.Open link ↗
  • College or afterPick a free NPTEL chemistry course, such as analytical or physical chemistry, and finish the first two weeks. Also download one recent PSU chemist notice from iocl.com or ntpc.co.in and compare its syllabus with what you have studied.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • PSU chemist hiring is small and irregular. Posts come in batches, and each notice is for a few dozen posts at most. Keep your M.Sc marks high and watch iocl.com and ntpc.co.in.
  • In 2026, IndianOil's QC officer post was for people with some lab experience after the M.Sc (reported). NTPC's ACT post was open to M.Sc students waiting for final results (reported). Posts differ, so read each notice closely.
  • Postings are all-India. Plants, refineries and power stations are often in smaller towns, and you may be transferred.
  • State public service commissions and state labs also advertise chemist posts from time to time. One example is an Andhra Pradesh Assistant Chemical Examiner notice in October 2026 (reported).
