Senior state administrator running departments and districts in Karnataka government.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving real problems for ordinary people in villages, towns and wards
- Running offices and schemes, with real authority and responsibility
- A stable government career, with the chance to work across many departments
- Years of preparation and long waits, with many more applicants than posts
- Transfers across Karnataka, and long hours during elections, floods or other emergencies
- Pressure from politicians, the public and seniors, and decisions that not everyone will like
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 12 stream. Pick the stream you do best in. After Class 12 you need any bachelor's degree (BA, BSc, BCom, BE, MBBS and so on) from a recognised university. Final-year students can sit the Prelims, but must show their degree before the Mains (reported, 2026–27 notification). Kannada and English both matter because the Mains has a qualifying paper in each (reported).
- First degree
- Any bachelor's or master's degree, usually 3 years after Class 12. There is no special "KAS degree".
- Entrance exams
- Karnataka Gazetted Probationers Competitive Exam (popularly called the KAS exam), run by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). It has Prelims, Mains and a Personality Test (interview).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Group A and B state officers who run offices and areas of the Karnataka government. Typical posts are Assistant Commissioner (a sub-division head), Tahsildar, Assistant Commissioner or Commercial Tax Officer in the tax department, Executive Officer in a panchayat, Chief Officer of a town municipality, and Assistant Director in social welfare or treasury. You deal with land and revenue matters, schemes, public complaints, elections and emergencies such as floods or drought.
A day in the work
A Tahsildar or Assistant Commissioner may start the morning checking land records and files with the office staff. Then come visitors with problems about land papers, pensions or certificates, followed by meetings with the Deputy Commissioner or department heads. The afternoon may be a field visit to check a flood-hit village, a ration shop or a school scheme. Evenings often go on reports and phone calls, and some days include elections or emergency duty on a weekend.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–12No special subjects are needed. Build strong Kannada and English reading and writing. Read a newspaper daily. Pay attention to civics, history, geography and economics. The exam asks a lot about Karnataka itself.
- Step 2 · Degree (about 3 years)Finish any bachelor's degree. Keep your marks decent, because you need the degree certificate to go beyond the Prelims. The 2026–27 notification asked for age 21 or more (reported). The upper age limit was 40 for General Merit, 43 for Categories 2A/2B/3A/3B and 45 for SC/ST/Category-1. This included a one-time extra 5-year relaxation for that cycle only (reported). The usual limits before the relaxation are 35, 38 and 40 (reported). The 2024 notification allowed 5 attempts for General Merit and 7 for Categories 2A/2B/3A/3B, and no attempt limit for SC/ST/Category-1 within the age limit (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Preliminary ExamTwo objective (MCQ) papers of 200 marks each, 400 in all, covering general studies, current affairs, Karnataka-focused topics and reasoning. It only shortlists candidates for the Mains. There is negative marking of one-fourth mark per wrong answer. For the 2026–27 cycle the Prelims was tentatively set for 15 November 2026 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Main ExamWritten, descriptive papers. Kannada and English are qualifying (35% needed in each, SSLC level). Then come Essay and General Studies I–IV, 250 marks each, 1,250 in all, counted for merit. There are no optional subjects now (reported). The Mains for the 2023–24 cycle was held in May 2025 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Personality Test (interview)A KPSC board talks to you for 25 marks (reported). It checks clarity, honesty, knowledge of Karnataka and how you think about public problems. Final rank = Mains marks + interview marks. Your rank and category decide which post you get. Documents are checked. Some posts, for example Prisons and Excise, may also need physical standards (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Appointment, training, probationYou join as a Gazetted Probationer. Foundation training happens at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI), Mysuru, which trains Karnataka's Group A and B officers. Then come field attachments and a probation period, reported as two years, before you are confirmed (reported). Promotion later is by seniority and department rules. (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
In 2026–27, KPSC advertised 319 posts (117 Group A and 202 Group B). News reports say about 1.47 lakh candidates completed their applications. That is roughly 460 candidates for each post (reported). Most Prelims takers will not reach the Mains, so plan a good back-up.

What people earn
Pay depends on the post and comes under Karnataka's government pay scales (reported). Several job websites quote a Group A junior-scale range of about ₹43,100–₹83,900 for the 2026–27 cycle. Others quote a basic of ₹83,700 under the revised 2024 scales. These figures do not match, and we could not open the official notification PDF to confirm either. Check the pay shown for each post in the KPSC notification. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances come on top (reported).

Pay rises with promotions and years of service. It also depends on which post you got through your rank, and postings in big cities or key departments can come with more responsibility and allowances.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Reservations apply for SC, ST, OBC categories, EWS and persons with benchmark disability (PwBD) in the vacancies, as fixed by the Karnataka government. Age limits are higher for reserved categories, and fees are lower or nil. Some posts, such as Prisons or Excise, may have physical standards, so check each post in the notification (reported). We could not confirm the exact women's or disability age relaxations from the official notice.

Good to know
- Timelines are long. The 2023–24 cycle (384 posts) was notified in February 2024. Its interviews finished in June 2026, and its final list was reported to be held up in the High Court as of October 2026 (reported). Plan for a wait of 2 years or more from notification to joining.
- "KAS" is not one post. The Gazetted Probationers exam fills 18 different posts in Group A and Group B. Assistant Commissioner is the best-known one. Many selected candidates get posts like Tahsildar, Commercial Tax Officer or Chief Officer. Your rank decides which one.
- KAS is different from IAS. The UPSC Civil Services exam fills IAS, IPS and IFS posts for all of India. KAS is for Karnataka government only.
- Always check the latest notification on kpsc.kar.nic.in. Age limits, attempts, vacancies and dates change from cycle to cycle. We could not open the 2026–27 notification PDF itself, so those figures are marked reported.
