Tahsildar / Revenue Officer
Manages land records, revenue collection and local administration at taluk level.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Being the person people come to when their land or paperwork is stuck
- Wide variety: land, elections, relief work, welfare schemes, all in one job
- A respected government post with job security
- Years of exam preparation with no guarantee, and the exam comes only every 1–2 years (reported)
- Transfers across taluks and districts, and long hours during elections or disasters
- Land disputes bring pressure from powerful people. You must stay honest and calm.
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 12 stream. Arts, Commerce, Science, all are fine. What counts is a bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university. This profile uses Karnataka (KPSC) as the worked example. Other states have their own exams, rules and language needs.
- First degree
- Any bachelor's degree from a recognised university, usually 3 years. Final-year students may be allowed to apply for the first stage (reported). Check each year's notification.
- Entrance exams
- In Karnataka: the KPSC Gazetted Probationers exam (Group A and Group B posts, including Tahsildar Grade-2): Prelims, Mains, then a personality test (interview). Other states recruit through their own Public Service Commission, and the name of the post and exam differs.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Looking after land records (the RTC or Pahani), mutation orders when land changes hands, collecting land revenue, issuing caste, income and residence certificates, handling land disputes and encroachments, and running elections and relief work in the taluk.
A day in the work
Morning starts at the taluk office with a stack of files: mutation orders, caste and income certificate approvals, and complaints. You hear land dispute cases like a small court, and you meet villagers who have travelled far to see you. In the afternoon you may visit a village to check records or look at an encroachment, or go to a flood or drought spot. During elections or relief work the day can run late into the night.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–12Study any stream you enjoy. Read a newspaper daily and get good at writing clearly. In Karnataka, Kannada reading and writing is needed for the exam, so keep it strong (reported).
- Step 2 · About 3 years after Class 12Finish a bachelor's degree in any subject. The minimum age is 21 (reported), so the degree and the age usually line up.
- Step 3 · PrelimsA multiple-choice screening test on general studies. In the 2026–27 KPSC cycle it was tentatively set for 15 November 2026, after applications closed on 7 September 2026 (reported). KPSC notifications come roughly every 1–2 years (reported), so waiting between cycles is normal. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · MainsWritten descriptive papers, including a compulsory Kannada paper for the Karnataka exam (reported). The official rules say the merit list is made from total marks in the main examination, which means the written papers plus the personality test. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Personality test and merit listAn interview by the Commission. KPSC then makes a separate merit list for each service in Group A and Group B, based on total marks. Your rank decides which post you get. Documents and certificates are checked at this stage (reported).
- Step 6 · Training and probation, 2 yearsYou join as a probationer. The official KPSC rules list a 2-year probation for Tahsildar Grade-II. You are trained and then posted to a taluk.
- LaterWith seniority and performance, Group B officers can move up to Assistant Commissioner and beyond (reported). This is not quick or guaranteed. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Direct entry through the State PSC (the main route)Who: Graduates in any subject Clear Prelims, Mains and the interview. In Karnataka this is the KPSC Gazetted Probationers exam, where Tahsildar Grade-2 is a Group B post.
- Other statesWho: Graduates who live in, or can work in, another state Each state has its own system. For example, in Andhra Pradesh, Tahsildar is reported to come through APPSC Group 2, not Group 1 (reported). Check your own state PSC's latest notice for the post name, language rule and domicile rule.
- Promotion from within the Revenue DepartmentWho: People already working in the department District and taluk offices have Shirastedars, Deputy Tahsildars and Revenue Inspectors who help the Tahsildar. Promotion rules differ by state and are set by the government (reported), so this is not an entry route for school students.

What people earn
Karnataka state pay scale, not the central 7th CPC matrix. The 2026 scale for Tahsildar Grade-2 is reported to start at ₹69,250 basic in a ₹69,250–₹1,34,200 scale, plus DA and HRA (reported, under Karnataka's revised pay rules of 2024). Older pages show older, lower scales. I could not read the official 2026 notification, so check the pay in the KPSC notice.

Pay is a fixed government scale that rises with years of service and promotion, and allowances such as HRA depend on the city where you are posted.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Age relaxations are reported for reserved categories (for example 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC and 10 years for PwD in one 2026 summary), and SC/ST/Category-1/PwD candidates are reported to pay no fee. Check the current notice for women's reservation and for which Group B posts are identified for persons with disabilities. I could not confirm those details officially.

Good to know
- The 2026–27 KPSC notification (dated 31 July 2026) is reported to cover 319 Gazetted Probationer posts, of which 25 are Tahsildar Grade-2 (18 general cadre plus 7 Hyderabad-Karnataka cadre). Those figures are reported, so confirm them on kpsc.kar.nic.in (reported).
- Age limits are reported to differ by source and cycle. The 2026–27 notice is reported to allow up to 40 years for General Merit, including a one-time 5-year relaxation. Earlier cycles used lower limits. Always read the current notice.
- Karnataka rules require knowledge of Kannada. Whether candidates from other states can apply, and under which category, is reported differently by different sources, so check the notification.
- Tahsildar is a KAS Group B post, not a separate career. If you like this job, also look at the Karnataka Administrative Service (kas-officer-karnataka) and other Group A and B posts from the same exam.
