Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Careful reading, spotting small details and fixing wording
  • Learning how business deals and foreign legal systems work without appearing in court
  • Structured work with clear targets, and a chance to move into contracts or compliance
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Night or odd-hour shifts to match US or UK time, and tight deadlines
  • Repetitive junior tasks that AI tools are starting to take over
  • Little client contact or court exposure at first, and 3 to 5 years of law study before you start
Class 11–12 subjects
Any Class 12 stream is fine for a 5-year integrated LLB. The Bar Council of India (BCI) sets a floor of 45% marks for general category and 40% for SC/ST in Class 12, or in graduation for the 3-year LLB. Individual colleges can ask for more. Some entry-level roles accept any graduate, but most employers prefer a law degree (reported).
First degree
LLB: 5 years after Class 12 (BA LLB, BBA LLB, B.Com LLB and so on), or 3 years after any graduation. Some firms also hire non-law graduates for contract-support roles (reported).
Entrance exams
No national exam for the job itself. For a 5-year law degree, many students take CLAT (Consortium of NLUs, 26 NLUs for the 2027 cycle) or a university's own entrance test. LPO firms run their own written tests and interviews on drafting, contract review and English (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Reading and summarising contracts, researching law and case law, drafting and proofreading documents, due diligence and compliance checks, and document review for litigation. You work for clients in the US, UK or elsewhere, under the supervision of a lawyer there or a senior reviewer here. You do not appear in court or advise the end client directly.

A day in the work
You log in and check your queue: say, twelve vendor contracts from a US client. You read each one against the client's checklist, mark unusual clauses and write a short summary. After lunch you research a regulation for a UK law firm and draft a two-page note, then send it to your team lead for review. Late in the day you join a call with the overseas team, get feedback and note what to fix tomorrow.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Pick any stream. Build strong English reading and writing, because the whole job runs on careful reading and clear drafting. Debate, Model UN and school magazine writing all help.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12 or after graduationChoose your law route. After Class 12 it is a 5-year integrated LLB, and CLAT is the entrance test for the NLUs (CLAT 2027 is reported to be on 6 December 2026, with applications closing 31 October 2026). After any graduation it is a 3-year LLB. Check that the college's law degree is recognised by the Bar Council of India.
  3. Step 3 · 3 to 5 yearsStudy law. The BCI rules require a minimum internship of 12 weeks for the 3-year course and 20 weeks for the 5-year course. Try to spend at least one internship at a corporate legal team, a law firm or an LPO.
  4. Step 4 · During or after the degreePractise the exact skills these jobs test: reading a contract clause by clause, writing a short research note, and drafting an NDA or service agreement. Learn the basics of data protection and intellectual property law (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Entry-level hiringApply to LPO companies and company legal-support centres for Analyst or Associate posts. Expect a drafting or contract-review test, an English test and an interview. Many teams work on US or UK time, so night or late shifts are common (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Years 1–5 on the jobYou are trained on each client's rules and checked by seniors. Over time you can move up to Senior Analyst or Team Lead, or move sideways into contract management, compliance or legal operations (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  7. OptionalAn LLM, or a short course in contract management, privacy or compliance. If you want to practise as an advocate in India, you would also need to enrol with a State Bar Council. See the notes on Rule 49 below.

Ways in

  • After Class 12: 5-year integrated LLBDo BA LLB, BBA LLB or B.Com LLB at a BCI-approved law college or National Law University. Apply to LPO firms and company legal-support teams in your last year or after you finish.
  • After graduation: 3-year LLBFinish any bachelor's degree first, then do the 3-year LLB. The BCI rules allow any discipline. This suits students who decide on law late.
  • Direct entry with any graduationSome LPO and contract-support teams hire non-law graduates for junior document or contract-abstraction work. The pool of such roles is smaller and it can be harder to grow into legal analysis without a law degree (reported).

What people earn

Pay usually starts modest at entry level and grows with experience, the client's country, your specialisation and the employer, and it tends to be higher in the big metros and at larger firms than at small LPOs.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must clear the Bar exam and become an advocate to work in an LPO.
Fact: LPO analyst jobs are normally open to law graduates without Bar enrolment (reported). The work is for overseas clients, not for Indian courts. Rule 49 also stops full-time salaried employees from practising as advocates at the same time.

For girls and students with disabilities

LPO hiring has no reservations or official relaxations. If you go through an NLU, there are quotas. The NLSIU 2027-28 brochure reserves 30% of seats horizontally for women and 5% for persons with disabilities, and other NLUs have their own rules, so check each brochure. Because the work is desk-based, many roles can be done from a laptop, but whether a firm offers remote work or accessibility support depends on the employer (reported).

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Read the Preamble and any one Fundamental Right in the Constitution of India. Write a 100-word summary in your own simple words, as if explaining it to a younger cousin.
  • Class 10–12Take a real document, such as the terms and conditions of an app you use or a sample rental agreement. Highlight five clauses, write one line on what each means, and note one thing that seems unfair. Also read a news editorial every day to build reading speed.
  • College or afterLook on SWAYAM for free courses on law, intellectual property or cyber law. Pick one and finish its first two weeks. Also draft a one-page NDA from a free template and ask a senior or teacher to critique it.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • There is no regulator for LPO work and no licence is needed to take an analyst job. The law degree itself must be from a college recognised by the Bar Council of India.
  • Under Rule 49 of the BCI rules, an advocate cannot be a full-time salaried employee and keep practising. A person in a full-time LPO job therefore usually does not practise in court at the same time.
  • AI tools now do much of the first-pass contract reading and search. One law-firm analysis says this squeezes the most routine work but raises demand for people who can check and take responsibility for the output (reported). Choose this career knowing the junior tasks are changing.
  • Industry write-ups mention high staff turnover and time-zone shifts as common problems in Indian LPOs (reported). Visit the workplace or talk to someone working there before you commit.
