Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Careful reading and spotting the one clause that matters
  • Negotiating and finding a deal that both sides can accept
  • Seeing a project run smoothly because the paperwork is in order
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Deadlines can cluster at month-end or project milestones, with long hours
  • You may have to say no or push back, which can make you unpopular
  • A law or certificate route takes years, and the rules and contract forms keep changing
Class 11–12 subjects
Any Class 12 stream works. A 5-year integrated law course (BA LLB, BBA LLB, B.Com LLB) needs a Class 12 pass. A 3-year LLB needs a bachelor's degree in any subject. Many people in this work come from commerce or law. Strong English writing matters a lot.
First degree
LLB (3 years after a degree, or a 5-year integrated law course after Class 12), or a BBA, B.Com or MBA followed by work experience and certification.
Entrance exams
For integrated law courses: CLAT, plus other university tests. For the 3-year LLB, each university runs its own admission process. For MBA, the usual management entrance tests apply.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Reading and drafting agreements with suppliers, customers, contractors or staff; negotiating terms; tracking deadlines, payments and changes; flagging risks; sorting out disputes; working with lawyers, finance and operations teams.

A day in the work
The morning often starts with checking emails from suppliers, clients or internal teams about a contract clause or a payment date. You might spend part of the day reviewing a draft agreement, marking risky terms and sending comments to the lawyers. Afternoons often go to calls or meetings where you negotiate changes or sort out a delay. You end the day by updating a tracker of deadlines, renewals and pending approvals.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Any stream is fine. Commerce or humanities helps if you want a law or BBA route later. Build good English reading and writing. Find out early which Class 12 marks law colleges ask for.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Choose your route. Either a 5-year integrated law course (CLAT for the National Law Universities, plus other university tests), or a bachelor's degree in any subject, with law or management after it. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 3–5 yearsStudy the LLB or a BBA, B.Com or MBA. A law degree covers contract law directly. The Law of Contract is one of the compulsory LLB papers. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · First job, 0–3 yearsStart in a contracts, procurement, legal or vendor-management role. Many people begin as contract executives or administrators and learn the work on the job. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Early career (optional)Take a short course in contract management. The IIMM course pages list certificate and diploma programmes, and several cover GFR 2017 and government e-marketplace (GeM) rules. Some courses are set up only for Coal India or SAIL staff.
  6. Step 6 · After 5+ yearsConsider a specialist certificate such as the FIDIC Certified Contract Manager. It is for people with a degree and about 5 years of experience, and it must be renewed after 3 years.

Ways in

  • Integrated law course after Class 12A 5-year BA LLB, BBA LLB or B.Com LLB. You enter the legal field earlier and finish with a law degree and a second degree.
  • Law after graduationA 3-year LLB after any bachelor's degree. Useful if you chose a different subject first.
  • Business routeA BBA, B.Com or MBA, then contract or procurement work, then short certificates. Common in companies, construction and government supply chains.

What people earn

Pay varies a lot. A new contract executive in a small firm earns much less than a senior contract manager in a large company, a construction firm or a big project. City, sector, and whether you hold a law degree or certificates all make a difference.

Myth and fact

Myth: A contract manager is just a lawyer who sits at a desk and reads papers.
Fact: The job mixes law, money, operations and people. Many contract managers come from business backgrounds and learn the legal side on the job or through certificates.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Read the terms on a mobile recharge plan or a school bus form with a parent. List three things each side must do.
  • Class 10–12Join a debate or mock-trial club at school. Practise arguing both sides of a simple deal, such as a shop rent or a sports sponsorship.
  • College or afterLook through the IIMM course list and check whether any free course is open to you. If not, read the 3-year LL.B. (Hons.) course outline to see how contract law is taught.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • No licence is needed to call yourself a contract manager. Your employer decides who gets the job.
  • A law degree is not the only route. Many contract managers come from BBA, B.Com or MBA backgrounds, plus certificates and on-the-job learning.
  • Going to court as an advocate needs more than a law degree. You must also register with a State Bar Council and clear the All India Bar Examination.
  • Government and PSU contract roles follow rules such as GFR 2017 and GeM bidding. Learn these if you aim for public-sector work.
