Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving puzzles where law, language and software meet
  • Making slow, paper-heavy work faster for real users
  • Being the translator between lawyers and engineers
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • You need to keep learning, because tools and rules (such as those for AI in courts) change quickly
  • Long study: 5 to 6 years, plus extra skills you teach yourself
  • It is a newer, smaller field in India, so job titles are unclear and the path is less fixed
Class 11–12 subjects
For the 5-year law route, any Class 12 stream is accepted. The usual minimum is about 45% (40% for SC/ST), but each college sets its own bar (reported). For the B.Tech route, you need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12. Computer Science or IT in Class 11–12 helps on either route.
First degree
5-year integrated LLB (BA LLB, BBA LLB or BSc LLB) after Class 12. Or a 3-year LLB after any degree. Or a B.Tech in Computer Science or IT, then legal-tech skills. Some universities offer a 6-year B.Tech LLB that gives both degrees.
Entrance exams
CLAT (Consortium of NLUs) for the National Law Universities. AILET, LSAT-India or university tests for other law schools. JEE Main or state entrance exams for B.Tech.
Licence or registration
No licence is needed to work in legal tech. If you also want to appear in court as an advocate, you must enrol with a State Bar Council and pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) to get a Certificate of Practice (reported).

What the work is like

Building, buying, setting up or running software that helps lawyers and companies. This includes contract review and drafting tools, legal research search, e-discovery (finding the key documents in huge piles of files) and case or matter management. You act as the bridge between lawyers and engineers.

A day in the work
You might begin by checking that a contract-review tool is flagging the right clauses for a client's lawyers. Then you sit with a partner or legal team to understand why their filing process is slow. Later you work with engineers to test a fix, or train the team on a new feature. The day ends with notes and a short report. Much of the work is at a desk, talking to people on both sides.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Read widely, write clearly and learn basic coding. Any stream works for law. If you lean towards the engineering side, take PCM with Computer Science. Try small projects, such as organising a messy set of documents into a table.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Choose your door. For the 5-year LLB at National Law Universities, apply through CLAT. The CLAT 2027 form is online only and the official last date is 31 October 2026. The exam is reported to be on 6 December 2026. Other law schools use AILET, LSAT-India or their own tests. For B.Tech, use JEE Main or a state entrance exam. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 5 to 6 yearsDo the degree: 5-year LLB, or B.Tech (4 years), or B.Tech LLB (6 years). Make sure a law programme is approved by the Bar Council of India. Take electives in contracts, IT law, data protection and IP. Intern at law firms, company legal teams or legal-tech startups. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Alongside your degreeAdd tech skills. Learn Python, databases and the basics of language AI (NLP). Learn to use contract-review and e-discovery software. If you are a coder, learn how contracts, evidence and court filings actually work. Free NPTEL/SWAYAM courses are a good start.
  5. Step 5 · First jobTypical entry roles are legal-operations analyst, legal-tech implementation associate, product associate or developer at a legal-tech company, a technology role in a law firm or in-house team, or an e-discovery and document-review role. All are private-sector jobs, so there is no common exam. You get in through internships, projects and interviews. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. OptionalTake the AIBE if you want to practise in court too. Or do an LLM in technology or IP law, or a master's in data science or AI to move into product or engineering.

Ways in

  • Law first5-year integrated LLB after Class 12 (or a 3-year LLB after any degree), then learn Python, data and contract-AI tools. This suits you if you enjoy reading, drafting and arguing, and want to be the person who knows what lawyers need.
  • Tech firstB.Tech in Computer Science or IT, then learn law on the job or through short courses or an LLB later. This suits you if you enjoy building software and want to build products for lawyers.
  • Both togetherA 6-year B.Tech LLB, offered by some universities. It gives you both degrees but takes the longest, so check that the law part is Bar Council approved.

What people earn

Pay usually starts modest to middling and rises with proven skills; it varies a lot by city, by whether you work at a law firm, a big company or a startup, and by whether you can both build and sell solutions.

Myth and fact

Myth: Legal tech means robots will replace lawyers and judges.
Fact: In Indian courts, AI is used to help with research, translation and paperwork, not to decide cases. PIB says it is meant to assist and never replace judicial decision-making, and some tools, like SUPACE, are still experimental.

For girls and students with disabilities

The CLAT 2027 application fee is lower (₹3,500 instead of ₹4,000) for SC/ST, BPL and PwD candidates, and a lower Class 12 marks bar for SC/ST is commonly reported. Most legal-tech work is desk-based. Colleges and employers set their own access rules, so check with them.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Open the eCourts website and see what a case status page shows. Then draw a simple flowchart of the steps in an everyday agreement, such as renting a flat. Ask which steps a computer could do and which need a person.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Enrol free in a beginner Python course on SWAYAM/NPTEL, such as the IIT/CMI programming course. The course is free to learn from; the certificate exam is optional and paid. Each run has fixed dates, so check the next batch.Open link ↗
  • College or afterBuild a small project. Take a few public court judgments, write a Python script that pulls out the names, dates and sections cited, and put the results in a simple table. Ask a law student or lawyer if the output is useful.

Good to know

  • Courts themselves are big users of legal technology. PIB says the eCourts Phase III project has an outlay of ₹7,210 crore, with money set aside for AI, machine learning and blockchain.
  • Most legal-tech jobs are in private firms, startups, big companies and law firms. There is no single government exam for this career.
  • Before you pay any fee to a law college, check that the programme is approved by the Bar Council of India. Otherwise the degree may not let you enrol as an advocate.
  • You do not have to be an expert in both law and coding. But you must be comfortable learning the other side well enough to talk to people from it.
