What the work is like
Deciding a product's price, how it is promoted and where it is sold; running brand campaigns; studying customer needs through surveys and sales data; managing budgets and a team of executives; working with sales, finance and product teams.
A day in the work
A typical day might begin with checking how a campaign performed overnight and reading the sales numbers. Mid-morning could be a meeting with the sales team, the agency or the product team about a new offer. Afternoons often go to planning next month's promotions, reviewing a customer survey, or approving the budget. The day usually ends with a short report for senior management.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take any stream you are good at. Commerce, Humanities and Science all lead here. Build comfort with reading charts, simple statistics and clear writing.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Join a 3-year BBA, BMS, B.Com or other degree. Pick a degree where you can take marketing, statistics and economics courses.
- Step 3 · Final year of graduationApply for MBA or PGDM programmes. Most top institutes use the CAT score, and many also hold a group discussion and personal interview. Exam dates and processes change each year, so check the latest notice. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 2 yearsStudy a 2-year MBA or PGDM with marketing as your specialisation. You will do case studies, live projects and summer internships, often in a company's marketing or sales team.
- Step 5 · After the MBAStart as a management trainee, brand executive or marketing associate. Many years of work are needed before a manager's title, and the path varies by company.
