What the work is like

Running district and block offices: land and revenue matters, schemes and funds, local development, accounts and finance, industries, and helping the Collector in law-and-order and disaster work. The posts depend on that year's advertisement.

A day in the work
You reach the office and go through files: land matters, scheme approvals or accounts. Then you meet villagers and local leaders who come with problems. In the afternoon you might visit a site, a school or a flood-hit village with your team. If something urgent comes up, such as a crowd, an accident or a VIP visit, the plan changes and the day runs late.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 8–12Pick any stream you enjoy. Build habits that help later: read a Marathi and an English newspaper, write short answers, and learn basic Maharashtra history, geography and civics. Keep your Marathi strong, because the exam tests it.
  2. Step 2 · 3 years or moreFinish any bachelor's degree. Some posts need a specific degree, for example B.Com with 55% for Finance and Accounts posts. For the Group B combined exam, reports say you must have passed your degree before the last date for the Mains form. Read each year's advertisement for the exact rule. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · PrelimsApply online on the MPSC portal when the advertisement comes out. In 2026 the Prelims was on 31 May. The age limit for open category was 38 years, with 5 years extra for reserved categories, EWS and orphans. The fee was ₹544 for open and ₹344 for the others. The Prelims has two objective papers, and the General Studies paper is the main one. It only decides who goes to Mains. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · MainsA descriptive written exam. It has Marathi and English language papers (qualifying), an essay, and General Studies papers. In 2026 the Mains was reported to be on 3, 17, 18 and 24 October. Only about 4,000 candidates were reported to have cleared the 2026 Prelims. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · InterviewA personality test for those who clear the Mains. The final merit list comes from Mains and Interview marks. Prelims marks are not counted. Candidates then choose posts in order of preference, and the post you get depends on your rank and the vacancies. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Training and probationAfter document checks and a medical, selected candidates are appointed to a post. Training and probation follow as per the Maharashtra government's rules for that post. Police-type posts also have physical standards. Details are in the joining orders. (reported — check with the official body)

Your real chances

The 2026 advertisement first listed 79 State Services posts (87 with veterinary posts), and MPSC said the number could rise (reported). After the Prelims on 31 May 2026, about 4,103 candidates were reported to have qualified for the Mains. Lakhs usually apply, so the final selection rate is very low.

What people earn

Official pay

The 2026 advertisement was reported to give the pay scale as ₹56,100–₹1,77,500 under the 7th Pay Commission (Pay Level 10 for Group A posts such as Deputy Collector), plus allowances (reported). Group B posts start at lower pay levels, and the exact level depends on the post. Check the pay for your post in the advertisement.

Pay is fixed by the government pay scale for your post, so it rises with promotions and years of service, and perks like housing and allowances depend on where you are posted.

Myth and fact

Myth: This exam always makes you a Deputy Collector or Tahsildar.
Fact: The posts in each year's advertisement are different. In 2026 the list was reported to include finance, group development and industries posts. Deputy Collector and DySP appear only in some years, and Tahsildar is often a promotion post.

For girls and students with disabilities

Reserved categories, EWS and orphans were reported to get 5 years of age relaxation and a lower fee, and PwD candidates also get the lower fee (reported). Rules on women's reservation, disability relaxation and physical standards for police-type posts differ by post, so check them in the year's advertisement.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Read one editorial from a Marathi or English newspaper each day. Note down one new word and one fact about how your district works.
  • Class 10–12Join a MY Bharat volunteering activity (age 15+) in your area. Then ask your village or ward office how a gram sabha or a land record works.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free SWAYAM course in political science, economics or public administration. Then write a one-page answer on a local issue, such as water, roads or school attendance.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The posts change every year. The 2026 advertisement (Advt. 132/2025) was reported to list 79 State Services posts, such as Deputy CEO/Group Development Officer, Assistant Director Finance and Accounts, Assistant Group Development Officer and Industries Officer. Other years have listed Deputy Collector and DySP too. Always read that year's advertisement on mpsc.gov.in.
  • Tahsildar is often reached by promotion from Naib Tahsildar. Do not assume the Rajyaseva exam gives you a Tahsildar post directly.
  • Dates and numbers here come from secondary reports. We could not open MPSC's own advertisement PDF, so please check the age limit, fee and vacancies on mpsc.gov.in before you plan.
  • Exam dates and results can shift. MPSC has postponed exams before, for example its Group C exam in 2026 (reported). Plan for a long, uncertain wait.
