Prosthetist and Orthotist
Designs and fits artificial limbs, braces and supports for people with disabilities or injuries.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with your hands and tools as well as with people
- Seeing someone walk or move better because of something you made
- Mixing biology, mechanics and a little electronics in one job
- Workshop work can be dusty, noisy and physically tiring
- You meet people in pain or grief, so patience and emotional steadiness matter
- The field is small, so jobs are fewer than in better-known health careers and are often in big cities or rehab centres
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Maths, and English, with at least 50% aggregate (RCI curriculum framework). Reservation and relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD follow Central or State Government rules. Diploma holders (DPO) from an RCI-recognised institute can join the BPO directly in the 3rd year.
- First degree
- Bachelor in Prosthetics and Orthotics (B.P.O.), 4.5 years including a compulsory 6-month internship, at an RCI-recognised institute.
- Entrance exams
- The RCI rules do not fix one national entrance exam. Each institute sets its own admission process, so read each prospectus. NIEPMD Chennai, a central government institute, has admitted students through its own national test and counselling (reported; its BPO page still shows the 2019 test).
- Licence or registration
- Registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) on the Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR). Under Section 13 of the RCI Act, only registered persons may practise or hold such a post in government.
What the work is like
Assessing patients, taking measurements and casts, designing and making artificial limbs (prostheses) and braces or supports (orthoses), fitting them, training patients to use them, and following up. The work needs both clinical judgement and workshop skill.
A day in the work
You start by meeting a patient, perhaps a man who lost his leg in an accident, and checking how he walks and how his stump looks. Then you take measurements and a plaster cast, and head to the workshop to shape, cut and assemble the socket and limb. Later you fit a child with a leg brace, adjust it, and show the parents how to put it on. Between patients you repair devices, write notes and talk with the doctors and physiotherapists on the team.
The full route: exams, training, registration
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Maths. Keep English too, because it counts towards the 50% aggregate. Physics helps because the course covers mechanics and electronics.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 with at least 50% aggregate in the required subjects. Check each college's own prospectus for its exact cut-off and category rules.
- Step 3 · After Class 12Apply to an RCI-recognised institute. Admission rules differ by institute: some use their own test or counselling, others use Class 12 marks. Check the institute's current prospectus and its RCI recognition before paying any fee. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Years 1–4Study anatomy, physiology, workshop technology, materials, biomechanics, electronics, orthopaedics and amputation surgery, and prosthetics and orthotics science. Practical workshop and clinical practice run alongside the theory.
- Step 5 · 6 monthsComplete the compulsory internship. The RCI curriculum requires 100% attendance. At least half of it must be at your own institute. The rest can be at hospitals or other clinical settings.
- Step 6 · After the degreeRegister on the RCI's Central Rehabilitation Register within 6 months of finishing the course. Students can apply for Pre-CRR during the course. You cannot practise or take a government post in this field without a valid CRR number.
- OptionalDo a Master's in Prosthetics and Orthotics for teaching or senior roles. The RCI framework treats this as the qualification for faculty posts.
Ways in
- Direct BPO after Class 12Join the 4.5-year BPO after Class 12 Science. This is the main route.
- Diploma, then BPO (lateral entry)Do a Diploma in Prosthetics and Orthotics (DPO) at an RCI-recognised institute. Then join the BPO directly in the 3rd year, subject to seats.
- RCI's latest norms say a fresh CRR number, renewal or add-on qualification carries no fee. Students who skip Pre-CRR in the first 3 months of the course pay ₹500 to apply.
- Registration is valid for 7 years (earlier it was 5). It renews automatically if you have 100 Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) points. Points do not carry over to the next cycle.
- A gap in registration attracts a penalty of ₹100 a month, up to ₹5,000.

What people earn
Pay starts modest and grows with experience, and it differs a lot between a government or charitable centre, a private clinic or a device company, and between big cities and smaller towns.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The RCI curriculum says relaxation and reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD students follow Central or State Government rules. NIEPMD's prospectus also has fee-waiver provisions for students with disabilities. A person with a disability should check with the college whether workshop and clinical tasks suit their needs.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Look at the bones and joints of your own hand and leg. Then try designing a simple finger splint or hand aid from cardboard or an ice-cream stick, and test how it holds a joint still.
- Class 10–12Browse free NPTEL or SWAYAM lectures on human body basics or mechanics to see if the subject holds your interest. Also talk to your Biology and Physics teachers about how the body moves.Open link ↗
- College or afterUse RCI's registration search to see how registered professionals are listed. Then ask a government hospital's physical medicine department or a rehabilitation centre if you can observe for a day.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Only RCI-approved qualifications count for registration. Before you join, confirm the course and the college are RCI-recognised.
- BPO is not the same as BPT (physiotherapy). A physiotherapist helps you recover through exercise. A prosthetist-orthotist makes and fits the device.
- Many colleges follow the RCI curriculum framework, which dates from 2017–18. Individual universities may add or change some details, so read your own college's syllabus.
- Fees, intake and entry process differ a lot between government-run and private institutes. Compare more than one prospectus.
