Build and maintain cantonment roads, buildings, airfields and power systems for the armed forces.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing real buildings, roads and power systems you helped build or repair
- A stable central government job with a clear pay structure
- Working with the armed forces in cantonments across the country
- Transfers to far-off or remote stations, sometimes in harsh weather
- Many applicants for few posts, and exam dates and rules can change each year
- Slow promotions, and a lot of paperwork and dealing with contractors
- Class 11–12 subjects
- For the degree route, take Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) to get into B.E./B.Tech. For the diploma route, you can join a 3-year Civil, Electrical or Mechanical diploma after Class 10. Check each college's own entry rules.
- First degree
- B.E./B.Tech in Civil (for JE Civil) or Electrical/Mechanical (for JE Electrical & Mechanical), about 4 years. Or a 3-year diploma in the same branch plus 2 years of work experience.
- Entrance exams
- SSC Junior Engineer Examination (Paper-I and Paper-II, both computer-based). MES then gives the posting.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Plan, supervise and maintain works for the Army, Navy and Air Force. This covers buildings, military roads, airfields, water and electricity supply, drainage and workshops. You check quality, measure work done, and work with contractors and senior engineers.
A day in the work
You start at the site or the garrison engineer's office, checking that the day's work is going to plan: a barrack roof being repaired, a road being laid, or a power line being tested. You measure work done, check materials against the specification, and note problems for the contractor. Back at the desk you prepare measurement sheets and reports, and answer queries from unit commanders who need something fixed quickly. Some days are mostly file work. Others are long hours in the sun or the cold, depending on where you are posted.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose your starting point. Either take PCM in Class 11–12 and aim for a B.E./B.Tech in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical. Or finish Class 10 and join a 3-year polytechnic diploma in the same branch.
- Step 2 · 3–4 years of study, plus experience if you hold a diplomaFinish your degree or diploma at a recognised institute. In the 2026 SSC notice, MES asks degree holders for no work experience. A diploma holder needs 2 years of experience in planning, execution and maintenance of works. That experience counts only if it comes after the diploma. Internships and training during the course do not count.
- Step 3 · Apply (SSC notice usually comes around September; 2026: 2–22 Sept)Apply online on ssc.gov.in for the Junior Engineer Examination. In 2026 the age limit for MES JE was up to 30 years as on 1 August 2026, with relaxations as per government rules. The fee was ₹100, with exemption for women, SC/ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen (reported). You choose your branch: JE (Civil) or JE (Electrical & Mechanical). A Mechanical graduate can also apply for E&M.
- Step 4 · Paper-I (computer-based)A common objective test with General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Engineering in your branch. The 2026 notice splits it as 50, 50 and 100 questions. Only those who clear the cut-off go to Paper-II. In 2026 the Paper-I dates were revised on 26 Oct 2026 (about 2–6 Nov and 30 Nov–1 Dec, reported). Check ssc.gov.in for the exact dates.
- Step 5 · Paper-II (computer-based)A technical paper of 100 questions and 300 marks in your branch, lasting 2 hours. The 2026 notice says separate merit lists are made for JE (Civil) and JE (Electrical & Mechanical).
- Step 6 · Document verification, medical and allocationSSC allots you to a department based on your rank and your preferences. You then get document and medical checks. These stages are reported from general SSC practice; read the notice for details. MES collects the selected candidates' papers (dossiers) after each SSC exam, and the Command HQs issue appointment letters and posting plans on mes.gov.in.
- Step 7 · Joining, probation and promotionYou join a MES unit anywhere in India, usually on probation (reported). Later promotions to Assistant Engineer and above follow MES rules and vacancies (reported). This is not an automatic climb.
Ways in
- Degree routeClass 12 (PCM), then B.E./B.Tech in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical, then SSC JE. No work experience is asked for MES in the 2026 notice.
- Diploma routeClass 10, then a 3-year diploma, then 2 years of relevant work experience, then SSC JE. This takes longer because of the experience rule. Many posts in other departments (like CPWD) take diploma holders with no experience, so read each department's line in the notice.
Your real chances
For 2026, SSC listed about 1,748 tentative Junior Engineer vacancies across all departments (reported; SSC posts the vacancy list on its notice board). For MES, one coaching-site table shows about 202 Civil and 136 Electrical & Mechanical posts (reported). I could not find an official applicant count for 2026, but this is a very competitive exam, with far more applicants than posts.

What people earn
Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 (7th CPC), Group B non-gazetted. Starting basic is ₹35,400 plus allowances such as DA and HRA (reported; the pay level is also given in the SSC notice).
Pay starts at a fixed government level, and take-home changes with the city of posting, allowances and years of service, while promotions are slow and depend on vacancies.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women can apply for MES JE, and the SSC notice says it encourages women to apply. Only the BRO posts are for men alone. The notice gives age relaxation for PwBD candidates and lists which benchmark disabilities these posts suit. Visually handicapped candidates are not considered suitable for the JE (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical) posts, so read the table in the notice.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Walk around your school or colony and sketch where rainwater flows, how the wiring reaches each room, and what the roads are made of. Make a simple model bridge from ice-cream sticks and test how much weight it holds.
- Class 10–12Start one free NPTEL or SWAYAM introductory course in civil or electrical engineering and finish the first two weeks of lessons. It shows you early whether you enjoy the subject.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead the latest SSC Junior Engineer notice on ssc.gov.in once, start to finish. Note the age date, the experience rule for your branch, the exam pattern and the vacancy list, then plan your final year around them.Open link ↗
Good to know
- This is a civilian Group B (non-gazetted) post, not an Army rank. SSC lists physical and medical standards only for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) posts, not for MES. A medical check still happens before joining.
- MES is one of several departments in the SSC JE exam. The same exam also fills posts in CPWD, CWC, BRO and others, and your rank decides where you go.
- Each year the notice can change age limits, vacancies, fees and experience rules. Always read the latest SSC notice before you plan.
- You can be posted to any MES station in the country, including border and remote areas.
