What the work is like

Keeping files and records, checking documents, helping with currency issue and circulation, day-to-day transactions and accounts, government treasury work, and replying to emails (reported). The work is clerical and operational. It is done in an RBI regional office, not a public bank branch.

A day in the work
You reach the RBI office in the morning and check the files and registers on your desk. Some days you match vouchers and accounts entries. On other days you help with currency-related work or government treasury paperwork, always double-checking numbers because small errors matter. You answer emails and queries from other departments and keep records neat for your officer. By evening you update the day's entries, and the work is steady rather than rushed.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose any stream you do well in. Keep Maths, English and reasoning sharp, and learn to read and write the language of the state you want to work in. The final stage tests that language.
  2. Step 2 · About 3 years after Class 12Finish a bachelor's degree in any subject. The 2026 notice asked for 50% marks (pass marks for SC/ST/PwBD), and basic word-processing skills (reported). Your age was counted on 1 February 2026, and the age band was 20 to 28 years, with relaxations (reported).
  3. Step 3 · Apply and Preliminary examApply only online on the RBI website. In the 2026 round, the window ran from 16 February to early March (the 8 March deadline was reported later extended to 10 March by some sources), and the exam was held in April. It is an online objective test of about 100 marks in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, with negative marking (reported). It only shortlists people for the Main exam.
  4. Step 4 · Main examA longer online objective test, about 200 marks in 135 minutes (reported), held on 7 June 2026. The RBI notice calls it the Main Examination. Reports say the final merit list rests on Main marks alone (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Language Proficiency TestA test of reading, writing, speaking and understanding the official language of the office you chose. It is qualifying. If you fail it, you are out, whatever your Main score. Reports say the Main result for this round came out on 24 September 2026, with the LPT next (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Document check and medicalYour certificates (degree, category, disability or age proof) are checked, and you have a medical fitness check (reported). The notice also warns that wrong information can lead to removal from service, even after joining. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Joining and early yearsYou join the RBI office you applied to. RBI notices usually mention a probation period for new staff, so check the latest notice for the exact terms (reported). Many Assistants later try internal promotions or RBI Grade B. (reported — check with the official body)

Your real chances

In the 2026 round (Panel Year 2025), RBI advertised 650 Assistant posts across its offices, and Mumbai alone had 249 of them. Reports say about 8,171 candidates qualified from the Preliminary exam for the Main exam (reported). We could not find an official figure for the total number of applicants.

What people earn

Official pay

RBI's own pay scale, not the 7th CPC pay levels. In the 2026 notice (Panel Year 2025), RBI said the initial gross monthly pay is about ₹58,514 without house rent allowance. It adds 15% of pay as HRA if you do not stay in Bank accommodation. Other perks include Bank accommodation (subject to availability) and an allowance for knowledge updation. The starting basic of ₹29,000 a month is as reported by exam-prep sites quoting the notice (reported).

Pay rises steadily with years of service and promotions, and your take-home depends on the city you are posted in, whether you get Bank housing, and the allowances you qualify for.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need a commerce or banking degree, and there will be an interview, to join RBI as an Assistant.
Fact: The 2026 notice asked for a degree in any discipline, not just commerce (reported). RBI's own notice describes selection as a Preliminary exam, a Main exam and a Language Proficiency Test. There is no interview in that list.

For girls and students with disabilities

The 2026 vacancy table has separate posts for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD categories A, B, C and D) and for ex-servicemen. Age relaxations are reported for SC/ST, OBC, PwBD and for widowed or divorced women who have not remarried (reported). Check the latest notice for exact rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Every day, solve 10 mental-maths sums and read one short English news piece aloud. This builds speed and comfort with numbers and language, which every stage of this exam uses.
  • Class 10–12Join a school activity that involves keeping accounts or records, such as the club or class fund. If you are 15 or older, you can also explore free volunteering on MY Bharat to build responsibility and teamwork.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free SWAYAM course in basic computers, spreadsheets or banking and money basics. Also practise typing and word processing, since the RBI notice asks for basic word-processing knowledge (reported).Open link ↗

Good to know

  • You apply to one RBI office (for example Mumbai, Chennai or Guwahati) and are tested in that state's language. Choose carefully. In the 2026 round, Mumbai had 249 of the 650 posts.
  • Dates, age limits, fees and vacancies change every round. RBI called the 2026 round 'Panel Year 2025'. Always read the latest notice on rbi.org.in under Opportunities@RBI. Official exam dates are marked 'tentative' and can change.
  • Beware of fake sites. RBI says to apply only online on its own website. RBI's own helpdesk link for application problems was cgrs.ibps.in.
  • Your Main exam marks decide your rank (reported). A mistake in the Preliminary exam, such as too many wrong answers, can cost marks because of negative marking.
