Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a small circuit you wrote the code for actually control a real device
  • Finding a fault on a board that looked dead
  • Working on cars, medical devices or home appliances
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long hours of debugging when the hardware and the code do not match
  • Reading long technical datasheets and manuals
  • Several years of study before the first real job, and skills must be kept up to date
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics and Maths, plus Chemistry or Computer Science. Most B.Tech colleges ask for at least 45% overall in the qualifying exam (reported). A 10+2 diploma route also exists.
First degree
B.Tech or B.E. in Electronics and Communication (ECE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE) or Computer Science (CSE), usually 4 years. An M.Tech is optional.
Entrance exams
No single national exam for this job. Most students enter a B.Tech through JEE Main or their state's engineering entrance. GATE is for M.Tech and public sector (PSU) routes.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Writing C and C++ code for microcontrollers, testing hardware and software together, debugging boards, designing circuit boards, and working with hardware and mechanical teams. Common products include car control units, medical devices, home appliances and IoT gadgets.

A day in the work
The day usually starts with a short team meeting on the test bench progress. The engineer then writes or fixes C code for a microcontroller and flashes it onto a test board. Much of the afternoon goes to checking a sensor or motor with an oscilloscope and tracing where a fault begins. The day ends with notes on what changed and what still does not work.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–10Build a strong base in Maths and Science. Try simple circuits with a battery, wires and LEDs.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Take PCM. Physics topics such as electromagnetism and digital logic are the base for circuit design. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · After Class 12Join a 4-year B.Tech in ECE, EEE or CSE through your entrance exam result. Pick a college with a proper electronics lab.
  4. Step 4 · Years 2–4Learn Embedded C, one microcontroller family (such as ARM Cortex, STM32 or ESP32), a real-time operating system (RTOS) and communication protocols like I2C, SPI, UART and CAN. Build 2–3 hardware projects. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Final yearApply for campus placements, internships at electronics or automotive firms, or start an M.Tech. GATE scores also open PSU and M.Tech routes.

Ways in

  • B.Tech in ECE or EEEThe most common entry. You learn circuits, microprocessors and embedded systems in one course.
  • B.Tech in CSE with embedded electivesWorks well if you enjoy coding more. You must add electronics and microcontroller skills yourself.
  • Diploma, then lateral entryA diploma in electronics can move into the second year of a B.Tech. Colleges set their own rules for this.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on whether you join a service firm, a product company or an automotive or chip firm, and on your skill level and city; experienced engineers with hardware and real-time skills earn much more than freshers.

Myth and fact

Myth: Only ECE or EEE students can become embedded engineers.
Fact: ECE and EEE are the usual routes, but CSE students can enter with C, microcontroller and basic hardware skills.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make one small circuit with a battery, a switch and an LED. Then try a cheap microcontroller board from a school science club to make an LED blink.
  • Class 10–12Read the official GATE 2026 EC syllabus to see what electronics covers. You are not preparing for GATE yet; you are checking what the field includes.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free embedded C or microcontroller course on a free government platform such as NPTEL, then build one sensor project and put the code online.

Good to know

  • Most ECE and EEE graduates start in firmware, testing or hardware roles. CSE students can enter too if they add microcontroller and circuit skills.
  • Job listings ask for C, microcontrollers, RTOS and protocols. Projects you can show matter as much as your marks.
  • Interested in building devices but not sure about 4 years of electronics? Look at mechatronics and robotics too.
