Physics and Maths needed After Class 12 Private sector

Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a machine you designed actually move and work
  • Switching between hardware, circuits and code instead of doing just one
  • Solving puzzles where a mechanical problem has an electronic or software fix
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • You must learn three fields at once: mechanics, electronics and programming
  • Entry to government institutes is by competitive rank, and private degrees can be very costly
  • Some work happens on noisy factory floors, with site visits or plant shifts
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics and Maths, plus Chemistry (or Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject) for JEE Main. NITs and similar institutes also set a minimum Class 12 mark, so check each college's rule. Many private universities also ask for English and about 50% in Physics, Maths and the third subject (reported).
First degree
B.Tech in Mechatronics (or Mechatronics and Automation), 4 years. A 3-year diploma followed by lateral entry into the 2nd year is another way in.
Entrance exams
JEE Main Paper 1 (NTA) then JoSAA counselling, for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes. JEE Advanced for IITs that offer the branch, such as IIT Bhilai. State engineering entrance tests for state colleges. Private universities often run their own tests or accept JEE Main scores.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing and testing machines that sense, decide and move: factory robots and assembly lines, CNC machines, car electronics, drones, medical devices and smart appliances. The work mixes mechanical design, circuits, microcontrollers, PLC and control programming, and testing on the shop floor.

A day in the work
You might start by checking a test rig where a robotic arm keeps missing its target. You look at the sensor readings on a laptop, tweak the controller code, and then walk to the shop floor to adjust a mounting bracket with a technician. After lunch you sit with the design team to review a new circuit board and a motor choice. The day ends with writing up test results, because every change has to be documented.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 8–10Build a strong base in Maths and Science. Start tinkering: small circuits, a motor, a sensor, a simple Arduino-style project. You don't need expensive kits to begin.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Take the PCM stream: Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Most B.Tech entrance routes need Physics and Maths. Learn some programming too, because mechatronics is as much code as metal.
  3. Step 3 · Class 12 (entrance)JEE Main is held twice a year, in January and April. The 2026 bulletin had no age limit. It allowed students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, or were appearing in 2026. Scores lead to JoSAA counselling for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes. IITs need JEE Advanced as well. The JEE Main 2027 bulletin is now on the NTA site, so read the current rules. You can also apply through state entrance tests or private university tests.
  4. Step 4 · 4 yearsB.Tech Mechatronics. You study mechanics, electronics, sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, control systems, PLC and robotics. Expect lab work, a final-year project and usually an internship. Choose a college that is AICTE-approved.
  5. Step 5 · During and after the degreeBuild a small portfolio: a line-following robot, an automated gate, a PLC demo. Add practical skills such as CAD, embedded C, Python and PLC programming. First jobs are usually in automation, manufacturing, automotive, testing or R&D teams.
  6. OptionalM.Tech in robotics, automation or control (often through GATE), or an MBA later if you move into management.

Ways in

  • JEE Main then JoSAAFor NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes. Admission is by rank, category and seat availability. Very few of these institutes offer a branch literally named Mechatronics (reported), so many students take Mechanical, Electronics or Robotics and specialise later.
  • JEE Advanced then JoSAAFor IITs. IIT Bhilai, for example, lists B.Tech Mechatronics Engineering. It is a hard route, and IIT Bhilai's 2026 closing rank for this branch was reported at about 12,000 in the open category.
  • State entrance tests or private university testsMany state government and private colleges offer B.Tech Mechatronics. Entry is through the state test or the university's own test, and some accept JEE Main scores. Fees vary a lot between colleges.
  • Diploma then lateral entryDo a 3-year diploma in mechanical, electrical, electronics or mechatronics after Class 10. Then join B.Tech in the 2nd year through lateral entry, where the college allows it.

Your real chances

In the January 2026 session, about 13 lakh candidates sat JEE Main Paper 1 for B.Tech, according to NTA data (reported). Mechatronics is a small branch, with few seats, in the government institutes that offer it. Many students end up in related branches or in private and state colleges.

What people earn

Pay starts modest and grows with hands-on skill; it differs a lot by employer (large manufacturers and automation firms versus small units), by city, and by how much software and control work you can do.

Myth and fact

Myth: Mechatronics is just robotics, so you will only build robots.
Fact: Robots are one part of it. Mechatronics engineers also work on CNC machines, car systems like ABS, factory automation lines, medical devices, drones and smart appliances.

For girls and students with disabilities

JoSAA keeps extra female-only (supernumerary) seats, mainly to raise the share of women in engineering, and applies category and PwD reservation. Check the current seat matrix on josaa.nic.in for which institutes and branches have them. Some institutes also waive tuition for PwD students, as IIT Bhilai does.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9With an adult's help, take apart something broken and unplugged, like an old toy car or printer. List every motor, sensor, switch and gear you find, and guess what each does.
  • Class 10–12Build one small project in a free online circuit simulator, such as an LED that blinks or a motor that turns when a sensor is triggered. Then try the same thing with a real board if you can.Open link ↗
  • College or afterWork through the first two weeks of the free NPTEL Mechatronics course from IIT Roorkee (sensors, actuators, microcontrollers), then build a small project from it. Check on the NPTEL site whether a new batch is open.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • No licence or registration is needed to work as a mechatronics engineer.
  • The branch name differs by college: Mechatronics, Mechatronics and Automation, Robotics and Automation. Read the syllabus, not just the name.
  • Check that the college and the course are AICTE-approved before you pay any fee.
  • If you miss a good rank, Mechanical, Electronics or Electrical Engineering plus self-learning in sensors, PLC and embedded programming can get you into the same kind of work.
