Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with your hands and seeing a rough lump turn into a form
  • Long periods of focus on one piece, with time to experiment
  • Making work that stays in public places, temples or galleries for years
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Uncertain, uneven income, especially in the first years
  • Heavy materials, dust, noise and physical strain from stone and metal work
  • Needing self-discipline, self-promotion and patience to find buyers or commissions
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 from a recognised board, in any stream. Most art colleges also ask for a minimum aggregate, often around 45–50% (reported). Drawing and clay modelling skills are tested, so arts subjects or regular sketching help.
First degree
BFA in Sculpture, 4 years (8 semesters). The first year is a common foundation; the next three years are specialisation.
Entrance exams
At College of Art, Delhi University: CUET (UG) plus a practical test. The sculpture test is modelling from memory in clay. Other colleges, such as Visva-Bharati's Kala Bhavana, use their own entrance or portfolio tests.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Modelling in clay, carving stone or wood, and casting or welding in metal. Work includes gallery shows, public art and installations, heritage or temple commissions, corporate and personal orders, and teaching. Many sculptors also run a small studio at home or on rented space.

A day in the work
A typical day starts in the studio with a clay or stone piece that needs more work. You might spend the morning modelling, then check how a piece looks under light from another angle. In the afternoon you could meet a client about a commission, order materials, or pack work for a show. Evenings often go to sketching ideas for the next piece.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Draw every day and keep a sketchbook. Try clay or wax modelling at school or in a local class. Take any Class 12 stream; arts is useful but not compulsory.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 from one recognised board. At College of Art, Delhi, apply for BFA through CUET (UG) and the university's seat allotment system. Check the college's own minimum marks.
  3. Step 3 · EntranceAt College of Art, Delhi, the best CUET scorers are called for a practical test. You need at least 50% in that test. The sculpture test is clay modelling from memory on a given subject.
  4. Step 4 · 4 yearsComplete the BFA. Year one covers the basics of drawing, design and art history. In later years you specialise in sculpture and build a portfolio of finished works. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · After the degreeShow work in exhibitions, take commissions, and decide whether to do an MFA. Kala Bhavana's MFA entry is reported to need 55% in the BFA. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • BFA in Sculpture (main route)A 4-year government or university degree. It gives the most training, studio time and exhibition access.
  • Diploma or certificate in sculptureShorter courses of about 6 months to 2 years, usually open after Class 12 or even Class 10 for some certificates (reported). They suit students who want practice without a full degree.
  • Self-taught and apprenticeshipLearning in a working sculptor's studio, or building skill through craft work and commissions. Possible, but harder to get into museums, colleges or government art projects without a degree.

What people earn

Earnings are uneven. Early years are often slow, and income depends on sales, commissions, teaching and how well-known your work becomes. Your city, your network and whether galleries or public bodies buy your work all make a big difference.

Myth and fact

Myth: A sculptor must become famous before they can earn a living.
Fact: Most sculptors earn through commissions, teaching, craft work and workshops, and build a reputation slowly. Fame helps, but it is not a requirement for steady work.

For girls and students with disabilities

The College of Art, Delhi admission policy describes a supernumerary arrangement for hearing and speech impaired applicants, who study the practical subjects prescribed for BFA. The 2025-26 prospectus also exempts hearing and speech impaired and benchmark-disability applicants from one university development fee.

Good to know

  • Sculptor is not a licensed title in India. No registration is needed to call yourself a sculptor.
  • Government art colleges charge far less than private ones. Check each college's fee page before you apply.
  • Income often grows slowly. Many sculptors combine commissions, teaching and craft work for years before steady earnings come.
