Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working outdoors with plants, insects and farmers
  • Seeing a real product, silk, come from a small worm
  • Helping rural families earn better, since many sericulture families are small farmers
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Few permanent posts, and many central openings are one-year contracts (reported)
  • Postings can be in villages or far from big cities, and may involve transfers
  • Hot, humid, hands-on work, and rearing schedules that can't wait
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) is the usual requirement for B.Sc Sericulture. Minimum marks and accepted subjects differ by university, so check each prospectus (reported).
First degree
B.Sc Sericulture (3 or 4 years, depending on the university). Some posts also accept a degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Zoology or Botany, with a PG Diploma in Sericulture or some project experience.
Entrance exams
Admission to B.Sc Sericulture is by merit or a state or university entrance test, depending on the college (reported). For jobs, state posts such as Sericulture Inspector are filled through the state public service commission or the department. Central Silk Board (CSB) hires through its own notices.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Teaching farmers how to grow mulberry and rear silkworms, checking rearing houses and seed (egg) supply, advising on disease control, checking cocoon quality, and running government schemes for sericulture families.

A day in the work
You might start early with a visit to a few villages to check mulberry gardens and rearing houses. You look at the worms, the leaf quality, the room temperature and signs of disease, and you tell the farmer what to change. Later you may help at a cocoon market to check quality, or fill in reports and scheme forms at the office. Some days are in the sun and mud. Others are paperwork and meetings.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Biology matters most. Notice how farming, plants and insects work. This field is mostly outdoor and hands-on.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Apply for B.Sc Sericulture at an agricultural university or a college that offers it. A few states have their own sericulture colleges. Admission is by merit or an entrance test, depending on the college. Seats are few, so check each college's own notice. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 3–4 yearsComplete the degree. It covers the silkworm life cycle, mulberry cultivation, rearing, diseases and silk reeling, with field and lab work. Choose a full-time course. CSB notices ask for a full-time degree.
  4. Step 4 · State department routeWatch for state notices for posts like Sericulture Inspector. One example is the Meghalaya Public Service Commission advertisement of December 2025. It asked for a B.Sc Sericulture, or a Botany/Zoology degree with a PG Diploma in Sericulture. Its written exam had a General English paper (60 marks) and a Sericulture subject paper (180 marks). Other states have their own exams and rules.
  5. Step 5 · Central Silk Board routeCSB advertises contract Sericulture Assistant posts for degree holders. In October 2026 these were one-year contracts, selection was by interview only, the age limit was 35, and pay was ₹21,000 a month plus HRA. The notices said the job gives no right to a permanent post (reported). Permanent Scientist-B posts need a Master's degree. In 2025 CSB filled them through ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (PhD) scores plus an interview (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · JoiningAfter selection come document checks and joining. Government posts usually have a probation period and some departmental training. The details differ by state, so read the notice for your post. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. OptionalM.Sc Sericulture and then a PhD. These open research and Scientist posts at CSB and agricultural universities.

Ways in

  • State sericulture departmentB.Sc Sericulture (or a related degree plus PG Diploma in Sericulture), then a state public service commission or department exam for posts like Sericulture Inspector. This is field and extension work with farmers.
  • Central Silk Board (central government)A degree gets you contract Sericulture Assistant posts at CSB units and research stations (reported). For permanent Scientist-B posts, do an M.Sc, then qualify through the ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (PhD) exam that CSB uses, then the CSB interview (reported).

What people earn

Official pay

Varies by state and post. Meghalaya's December 2025 advertisement for Sericulture Inspector / Reeling Foreman / Manager listed Level 10 of the Revised Pay Structure. A J&K district page lists Sericulture Inspector at ₹35,600–1,12,800 and District Sericulture Officer at ₹35,900–1,13,500 (older page, year not confirmed). CSB's contract Sericulture Assistant post paid ₹21,000 a month plus HRA in October 2026 (reported, not from the official PDF). CSB Scientist-B is Level 10 (reported).

Pay depends mostly on whether the post is permanent state or central service or a short contract, and it rises with promotion and years of service. Private reeling units and seed companies pay differently from government posts.

Myth and fact

Myth: A sericulture degree means you will just work on a silk farm.
Fact: Most government sericulture jobs are about advising farmers, inspecting, running seed and cocoon programmes, training and research. But openings are limited and often come as short contracts, so check each notice for the type of post.

For girls and students with disabilities

Reservation and age relaxation follow each recruiting body's rules, so read the notice for your post. For CSB's 2026 Scientist-B notice, application fees were waived for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates (reported). I could not confirm any physical standards or special openings for students with disabilities from official pages.

  • Class 7–9Read about the silkworm life cycle, from egg to cocoon to moth, and make a simple drawing of it. Then ask your science teacher if you can grow a small mulberry or leafy plant and observe insects on it.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Find out whether your district has a state sericulture office, a Krishi Vigyan Kendra or a silk farm. Ask if students can visit. Also read which states grow mulberry silk and which grow tasar, eri and muga.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • "Sericulture Officer" is not one fixed post. Titles differ by state, for example Sericulture Inspector, Extension Officer or Technical Assistant. Pay, exams and age limits differ too.
  • Vacancies are few and come in waves. Many CSB openings for degree holders are one-year contracts (reported), so check whether a notice is for a permanent or a contract post.
  • India is the world's second-largest silk producer. Raw silk output rose from 31,906 MT in 2017-18 to 38,913 MT in 2023-24 (PIB, Ministry of Textiles).
  • Mulberry silk is produced mainly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir and West Bengal. Non-mulberry silks (tasar, eri, muga) come from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and the north-east. Jobs cluster in these states.
