Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with your hands, colours, fabrics and materials
  • Travelling to villages and learning from master artisans
  • Seeing a traditional craft find new buyers because of your design
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Income can be uncertain, especially in the first few years
  • Field work can mean basic conditions, long travel and slow timelines
  • The 4-year degree is costly, and you must fit the artisans' pace and needs, not just your own ideas
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts) is enough for NID and NIFT B.Des. NIFT lists B.Des as open to any stream. NID's 2026-27 handbook also said Class 12 in any stream. There is no PCM requirement. The tests check drawing, observation and creative thinking, not Physics or Maths. A 3-year handloom diploma at an Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) starts after Class 10 (10th pass, English as a subject).
First degree
B.Des, 4 years, at NID or NIFT, in a textile or material-based discipline. Or a 3-year Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology at an IIHT after Class 10, which can be followed by a degree later.
Entrance exams
NID: Design Aptitude Test (DAT), with a Prelims and then a Mains. NIFT: the NIFT Entrance Exam run by NTA (GAT + CAT), then a Situation Test.

What the work is like

Visiting craft clusters and weaver villages. Understanding the craft, its tools and its limits. Developing new products such as sarees, home textiles, accessories and furniture with artisans. Making samples, fixing colours, costs and delivery times. Helping artisans reach buyers, shops and online markets.

A day in the work
You reach a weaving cluster in the morning and sit with a master weaver to test a new colour combination on the loom. You note how many days one saree takes and what it will cost. In the afternoon you sketch motifs, update your sample book and speak to a buyer about what sells. In the evening you send photos to your team, plan the next visit and check that payments to the artisans are on time.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Study any stream. Keep sketching, notice colours, patterns and materials, and look closely at crafts near you. Visit craft fairs and museums when you can. Marks in Maths or Science do not decide entry to the design tests.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 (apply from Sept–Jan of Class 12)Apply to the entrance tests. For 2027 entry, NIFT applications closed on 16 November 2026 (late fee till 21 November). The exam is on 10 January 2027, with GAT on computer and CAT on paper. NID applications close on 30 November 2026, with DAT Prelims on 20 December 2026. NID's Prelims result is due on 16 March 2027. Dates change every year, so check the official sites.
  3. Step 3 · March–May of Class 12Second-stage tests. NIFT B.Des has a Situation Test, planned for March–April 2027. NID's Prelims only shortlists candidates. The Mains has studio and in-person sensitivity tests, as in the 2026-27 handbook. Final NID merit comes from the Mains (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · 4 yearsB.Des in a textile or material-based discipline, such as Textile Design. You learn drawing, colour, materials, weaving and printing. Most courses include project or field work with craft clusters. The details differ by campus and course, so read the college's own course page. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · After the degreeBuild a portfolio by working with a craft cluster, an NGO, a craft brand or an export house. You can also start your own small label. If you want government design projects, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) empanels designers who hold a 4-year design or fine arts degree. The empanelment is valid for 5 years.
  6. OptionalM.Des in textile or related design, or a short course in a specific craft such as natural dyeing or block printing.

Ways in

  • Main route: NID or NIFT after Class 124-year B.Des through DAT (NID) or the NIFT entrance exam. This is the most common way to become a designer who works with craft communities.
  • IIHT diploma after Class 10The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Varanasi, offers a 3-year Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology. It teaches handloom weaving, processing and design. Candidates must be 15–23 years old on 16 July of the admission year (15–25 for SC/ST). They apply through their state government's department. Admission is by merit in the qualifying exam.
  • NIFT lateral entry or Artisan categoryNIFT has a lateral-entry route (NLEA) for diploma holders in fields such as handloom technology. NIFT also has a separate Artisan admission guideline. Eligibility depends on the diploma and years of experience, so read NIFT's guidelines for that year.

What people earn

Early years are usually modest and uneven, especially if you freelance or start your own label, and income grows with your reputation, your buyers and how well your products sell, with designers in big cities or export and brand jobs often earning more than those working only with small village clusters.

Myth and fact

Myth: To work in crafts, you must already be an expert weaver, potter or embroiderer.
Fact: Designers do not replace artisans. The artisans make the product, and the designer learns the craft well enough to suggest changes that work and that buyers want. Good listening and respect for the artisan's skill matter as much as drawing.

For girls and students with disabilities

NID has reserved categories (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) and, in its 2026-27 handbook, a lower application fee for women (₹2,000 vs ₹3,000) and for SC, ST and PwD candidates. At NIFT, the age limit for B.Des is below 24 on 1 August, with 5 years of relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates. NIFT also has a separate Artisan admission route for craft practitioners.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one local craft, such as block print, pottery, bamboo or a handloom weave. Visit a craft fair, a museum or a craftsperson's home. Sketch five motifs and write what each one is for or means.
  • Class 10–12Download the free NID admissions handbook and read how the entrance tests work. Then do one drawing or observation task a week, such as sketching an object from three sides.Open link ↗
  • College or afterBrowse the Crafts Cluster of India pages on the Handicrafts office website. Pick one cluster and write a one-page note on how its products could be improved. You can then offer to help a local artisan group with photos or samples.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Neither NID nor NIFT offers a single degree called "craft designer". At NIFT, Textile Design is the closest B.Des. NID's textile and material-based disciplines such as textile, ceramic and glass are also close (reported). You build the craft focus through projects and your portfolio.
  • This is self-employed work. No licence is needed. Your portfolio and your relationships with artisans are your "qualification".
  • In government Design and Technology Development Workshops, the empanelled designer works with 20–40 artisans. The designs and prototypes made there belong to the Government of India, according to the Handicrafts office's scheme guidelines. Private work can be set up differently.
  • Dates and fees above are for the 2027-28 admission cycle. NIFT and NID change them every year, so check nift.ac.in, exams.nta.nic.in/niftee and admissions.nid.edu.
