What the work is like

Diagnosing and treating sports and exercise injuries, mostly without surgery. Planning rehabilitation and safe return to play. Advising on fitness, training load, nutrition and injury prevention. Pre-participation health checks. Covering matches and camps as team doctor. Working with physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons and coaches.

A day in the work
A sports medicine doctor often starts in the OPD, seeing a young cricketer with a sore shoulder, a runner with knee pain and a footballer returning after a hamstring tear. She examines them, orders scans if needed and writes a rehab plan with the physiotherapist. Later she may visit the gym or ground to watch an athlete's movement, or check players before a tournament. On match days or at camps, she is on the sidelines, ready for a sudden injury, a faint or heat illness.

Professional qualificationRun by National Medical Commission (NMC). You can start after: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Minimum time: About 8.5 years after Class 12 (5.5 years MBBS with internship, plus 3 years MD).

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Biology (and English) in Class 11–12. Keep marks strong in Biology and Chemistry. If you play a sport, notice how injuries are treated and ask questions.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Write NEET UG, conducted by NTA. You must be 17 by 31 December of the admission year. There is no upper age limit, and the number of attempts is not limited (reported). Seats are filled by counselling, with 50% all-India quota and the rest state quota (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · About 5.5 yearsMBBS at an NMC-recognised medical college. This is 4.5 years of study plus a 1-year compulsory rotating internship in hospital departments.
  4. Step 4 · After internshipGet registered with the NMC or your State Medical Council. NEET PG asks for a provisional or permanent registration certificate.
  5. Step 5 · NEET PGWrite NEET PG, conducted by NBEMS. For the 2026 cycle, the exam was reported to be on 30 August 2026, with internship to be completed by 30 September 2026. Seats are then filled by counselling (MCC for all-India seats, states for state seats). Your rank decides whether you get Sports Medicine or another branch. Check NBEMS for the next cycle's dates. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 3 yearsMD Sports Medicine as a full-time resident doctor. Under NMC's 2023 rules, the course is 3 years including exams. You can also look at a DNB seat in an NBEMS-accredited hospital.
  7. OptionalFellowships, courses in sports science or doping control, a PhD, or teaching posts in medical colleges. Many doctors also work in teams and academies on contract.

Ways in

  • MD Sports Medicine after MBBSMBBS, internship, NEET PG, then a 3-year MD in Sports Medicine at a medical college. This is the main route.
  • DNB after MBBSThe NBEMS awards DNB degrees after 3 years of training in NBEMS-accredited hospitals. Sports Medicine appears in NBEMS's accreditation list, but seats are few (reported). Entry is also through NEET PG.
  • Orthopaedics first, then a sports fellowshipIf you take MS/DNB Orthopaedics, you can later do a 2-year FNB in Sports Medicine under NBEMS. Safdarjung's Sports Injury Centre runs one. This leads more towards surgery.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • NEET PG rules and dates change every year. For 2026, the internship cut-off was reported as 30 September 2026, so always read the latest NBEMS bulletin.
  • NMC's 2023 rules say NEET PG continues for PG admission until the first batch under the National Exit Test (NExT) becomes eligible. Check whether NExT has come in before you plan.

What people earn

Early years as a resident or junior doctor pay modestly, while experienced specialists earn much more, especially in private hospitals, sports clinics and with elite teams, and earnings differ a lot between big cities and smaller towns.

Myth and fact

Myth: A sports medicine doctor is just an orthopaedic surgeon who operates on players.
Fact: Most sports medicine work is non-surgical. It covers diagnosis, treatment plans, rehab, injury prevention and fitness advice, and the doctor refers to a surgeon only when an operation is needed.

For girls and students with disabilities

NEET and PG counselling have reserved seats and lower qualifying cut-offs for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates (reported). The work is physically active, so students with disabilities should check NMC's current guidelines on medical admission.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Learn basic first aid and what to do for a sprain. Ask your PE teacher to show you the school first-aid kit and keep a short note of common sports injuries in your school.
  • Class 10–12Read the Class 11–12 Biology chapters on the musculoskeletal system and on body movement from the free NCERT textbooks. Offer to help at a school sports day first-aid desk, or join a local event through MY Bharat if you are 15 or older.Open link ↗
  • College or afterLook at the observership and short-term training options at the Sports Injury Centre listed on its official page. Ask your college's sports department if you can shadow the team doctor.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • MD Sports Medicine is offered by only a small number of institutions. The Sports Injury Centre at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, runs a 3-year MD affiliated with GGSIPU and calls itself one of the pioneering centres in India.
  • Sports medicine seats are few, so your NEET PG rank matters a lot. Keep a second-choice branch in mind, such as general medicine, orthopaedics or physical medicine.
  • MBBS alone does not make someone a sports medicine specialist. Ask for the MD or DNB qualification and registration.
  • Sports medicine doctors and sports physiotherapists work side by side. If you like rehab work more than diagnosis, look at physiotherapy too.
