Treat sports injuries and plan rehabilitation for athletes and active people.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with your hands and seeing someone get back to their sport
- Understanding how the body moves, and why it breaks down
- Being around sport, training and athletes every day
- About 7 years of study after Class 12 if you want the sports specialisation
- Long hours on your feet, weekend and evening matches, and travel with teams
- Few full-time sports jobs, so many people begin in hospitals or clinics and build up slowly
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology), and a pass in English. The national curriculum asks for at least 50% in PCB, and the student must be 17 by the date of admission. Reserved categories get lower cut-offs at many colleges, so check each college. PCM-only students do not qualify unless they add Biology through a recognised board.
- First degree
- BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy). The new national curriculum makes it 5 years: 4 years of study plus a 1-year internship. After that, an MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) in Sports, which takes 2 years, for the sports specialisation.
- Entrance exams
- For 2026-27 admission, NEET UG is not compulsory for BPT. Colleges use Class 12 PCB marks, a state CET or their own entrance test (for example, the SVNIRTAR Cuttack CET). NEET UG is due to become compulsory from 2027-28 (reported), so check the latest NCAHP notice before you apply. MPT admission is through a university or institute test or merit (for example, the SVNIRTAR PGET).
- Licence or registration
- Registration on the State Register kept by your State Allied and Healthcare Council under the NCAHP Act, 2021. The registration certificate is valid for five years and must then be renewed. 'Sports physiotherapist' is a specialisation, not a separate licence.
What the work is like
Checking injuries, planning treatment and exercise, helping athletes return to play, taping and strapping, injury-prevention work, and travelling with teams. Many sports physios also work in hospitals and clinics with ordinary patients.
A day in the work
The morning might start at a clinic or academy, where you check how an athlete's sore knee is moving and adjust the exercise plan. Later you tape ankles before practice and watch warm-ups for risky movements. In the afternoon you work with a footballer recovering from a ligament surgery, writing notes and tracking progress each week. On match days or tournaments you are on the sideline with a kit bag, ready to assess an injury in a minute or two.
The full route: exams, training, registration
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Without Biology you cannot join a BPT. Aim for a comfortable 50% or more in PCB.
- Step 2 · Class 12Apply for BPT. For 2026-27 most colleges used PCB merit or their own entrance test, because NEET was put off by a year. NEET UG is due from 2027-28 (reported), so students now in Class 11 or 12 should watch for the final NCAHP and college notices. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 4 yearsBPT at an NCAHP-aligned college with a good attached hospital. Anatomy, exercise therapy, orthopaedics and sports physiotherapy are all part of the course. Clinical practice starts from the 2nd year.
- Step 4 · 1 yearCompulsory rotating internship in hospital departments. The college pays a stipend at the rate set by the State Council (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5Register with your State Allied and Healthcare Council. Renew every five years.
- Step 6 · 2 yearsMPT in Sports Physiotherapy or Sports Sciences. Most colleges ask for a BPT with 50% and a completed internship (reported). Not every college offers the sports specialisation. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · After MPTBuild experience with academies, clubs, state teams or a hospital sports-injury clinic. Sports bodies often ask for a Master's plus about 3 years of work as a physiotherapist, so expect to start in general practice.
- The new NCAHP curriculum makes the BPT 5 years including a 1-year internship. Older courses were 4.5 years.
- NEET UG was meant to start for BPT in 2026-27, but NCAHP put it off to 2027-28 in a letter to UGC dated 2 March 2026 (reported).
- Registration on the State Register is valid for five years and has to be renewed.

What people earn
Pay is modest at the start and rises with a Master's, years of experience and a good reputation. It differs a lot between a small-town clinic, a big-city hospital, a sports academy and a contract post with a sports body, and private practice can grow well but takes years to build.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Students with a benchmark disability (40% or more) can apply under the disability quota. The NCAHP guidelines limit certain types and degrees of disability because the work is hands-on, so check them before applying. Some sports authority postings ask for at least one woman physiotherapist, so women are in demand for women's teams.

Good to know
- Physiotherapy is regulated by NCAHP, not the National Medical Commission. A physiotherapist is not an MBBS doctor.
- The rules for admission are changing. Check the latest NCAHP notice and each college's brochure before you apply, especially for 2027-28 entry.
- Sports bodies hire on contract. Sports Authority of India posts for physiotherapists have asked for a Master's in Physiotherapy with at least 3 years of experience, or a bachelor's or master's for some performance-analyst posts (reported).
- Like the sport but not the clinic work? Look at sports science and sports medicine too.
